Quick WalkthroughEdit

  1. Talk to a Dark Slayer in a Dark Brotherhood guildhall.
  2. Head to the town named by the Dark Slayer.
  3. Locate and enter the local Mages Guild.
  4. Find and execute your target within the Mages Guild.
  5. Report back to the Dark Slayer within the time limit to collect your reward.

Detailed WalkthroughEdit

Magical CompetitionEdit

Speak to the Dark Slayer, who says:

"I recognize your expression, (player's first name). You are growing arrogant, egotistical, and vain. It's wonderful to see. Still, you need to exercise your humility and take on an assignment with dangerous political connotations. We have a contract on a high ranking member of the Mages Guild. Are you up for it?"

AcceptEdit

The Dark Slayer goes on:

"You don't disappoint me, (player's first name). Yes, we have been asked to account this wizard, who by the way is no sparkcaster. To make matters a little more interesting, this mage never leaves the Mages Guild -- so you must run the risk of disturbing several dozen of the best, most destructive spellcasters in the realm. You will find the sorcerer in the Mages Guild in (town). The contract is valid for (time limit) days, and then you must be back and this wizard must be dead. Fair luck to thee and may her infernal highness Mephala guide thy hand and foot."

DeclineEdit

The Dark Slayer answers:

"Then strike that giddy grin from your face until you develop some bravery."

Slaying the SpellcasterEdit

Travel to the town named by the Dark Slayer and enter the Mages Guild. The building will be open for business from 11:00 to 23:00, after hours you must pick the lock, cast an Open spell, or otherwise force the door. Find and kill your target within, who will appear as a battlemage, mage, sorcerer, or spellsword. There will be no other enemies in the guildhall. When the target dies, a message appears:

You have slain the mage. The Brotherhood will be proud.

Return to the Dark Brotherhood for your reward.

RewardEdit

When you report back after successfully killing the mage, the Dark Slayer says:

"The proud accounter returns, hands drenched with the blood of the hated wizard. You have accomplished something now, (player's first name). You have a reason to be proud. Enjoy your (random gold) gold pieces, (player's first name). And you can keep that grin on your face."

After you have accepted this quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "Things are quiet at the Mages Guild. Makes me think of a sleeping dragon."
  • "Sometime somebody's gonna do something about that wicked sorceror [sic]."

If you fail the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "Well, the mage left the Mages Guild, but I'm sure we'll see that scoundrel again."
  • "Much more excitement than the Mages Guild usually gets with that wizard leaving."

If you successfully complete the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "I think the Mages Guild is as relieved as everyone else at the mage's death."
  • "If you ask me, that wizard was a bad influence on the Mages Guild anyway."

If you successfully complete the quest, the quest giver may later greet you with:

  • "That (town) must have been a wretched place, (player's first name). How lovely."

If you failed the quest, the quest giver will greet you with:

  • "You left that mage alive and still you think you deserve my time. You are egotistical indeed, (player's first name)."
