Announced just last week, Chip Theory’s new board game, The Elder Scrolls Betrayal of the Second Era, is now in development! Learn more about this new way to experience Tamriel and its connection to The Elder Scrolls Online.

In addition to our own big announcement last Thursday, the independent board game design and publishing team at Chip Theory Games also revealed their next major release: The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era.

As you might have determined from the title, this new board game is set during Tamriel’s chaotic Second Era—something it and The Elder Scrolls Online have in common! Check out the announcement video below for a quick preview on what you can expect from this upcoming game.

Long-time ESO players might recognize elements from The Elder Scrolls Online when playing the board game, which features a brand-new way to explore Tamriel during the Interregnum.

“As we have developed Betrayal of the Second Era, we have been consulting with ZeniMax Online Studios about gameplay and story elements to make sure the game fits in with the rich tapestry of Tamriel,” explains Josh Carlson, the owner and one of the game designers behind Chip Theory. “We have been in contact with ZeniMax on a wide-ranging variety of elements, from overall plot elements and which creatures are included in which regions to making sure that the gameplay retains the essential Elder Scrolls experience.”

Of course, while drawing plenty of inspiration from ESO, the team also set out to create their own story during this turbulent time in Tamriel’s history.

“The Tamriel featured in ESO provides the core basis of the world players will inhabit in Betrayal of the Second Era. The guilds they join, many of the classes they'll be able to spec into, and the locations they visit will all be informed by ESO, even as the board game takes its story in a new direction.”

“The game takes place specifically during the events of the Planemeld, as the Order of the Black Worm leader Mannimarco seeks to join Tamriel with Coldharbour. As players delve into brand-new quests and encounters, they will see the consequences of Mannimarco's actions and discover new plot elements that happened behind the scenes of this earth-shattering event, allowing them to immerse themselves even deeper in Tamriel's Second Era.”

The Elder Scrolls: Betrayal of the Second Era is set to release this coming Fall 2022 and brings an exciting new way for adventurers to experience the world of the Elder Scrolls.
