Greenward was a legendary Breton figure in the lore of northern Bangkorai, and the first Viridian Sentinel.[1]

According to the legend of the Viridian Sentinel the Altmer conquerors of Clan Direnni once made an agreement with the Earth Bones to safeguard their settlements scattered throughout the region of High Rock from the dangers of the wilderness. However, at some point in the First Era, when their former subjects, Bretons took over, they lacked such an agreement and consequently, their farms in the region of Bangkorai were slowly overwhelmed by nature. The people were on the verge of famine, and it was then that Greenward, back then a young boy, prayed to the God of Mercy Stendarr for aid. Legend claims that he received a vision from a kingfisher that told him how to stop the beasts. This led to him learning how to create a new pact with the forest, which granted him the ability to control the natural creatures. At that moment, Greenward became the first Viridian Sentinel.[1]

Greenward took on the task of walking the border between the vanquished lands and the wilderness, acting as a bridge between the civilization and the nature, telling the beasts his name and claiming the land as vanquished. He was successful in turning them back. He continued to walk the border until he grew old, and a young girl who had been spoken to by a bird took up the task when he passed away.[1]

LegacyEdit

The line of Viridian Sentinels continued to follow in Greenward's footsteps for generations, spanning several centuries until 2E 582. During this time, it was Stenwick Gurles who was responsible for maintaining the balance and harmony between the Breton settlements and the natural world.[3][4] It is unknown whether he was succeded by Elara, the former princess of Evermore or not.[5][6]
