—Kinlady Iniel[1]
Kinlady Iniel Corelanya was the leader of the Corelanya Clan of Hammerfell Altmer.[2] She was a skilled warrior, adept in combat and capable of wielding lightning magic, who fought against the Yokudan colonists.[1][3] She was also an intrepid explorer and bold conqueror, driven by the pursuit of rich lands for her clan's merchants to exploit.[2]
HistoryEdit
KinheirEdit
Iniel was born in 1E 667 to Kinlord Roliondil. She was Sundavar's great-granddaughter and father's kinheir. She grew up to be an intrepid explorer and bold conqueror, determined to expand the dominions she was destined to inherit. From hidden havens along Cape Shira, Corelanya galleys set sail in search of prosperous lands for their merchants to exploit. Few ventured farther or returned with greater wealth than Iniel herself.[2]
In 1E 723, Kinheir Iniel landed on the distant island of Solstice and encountered its Argonian civilization for the first time. Three years later, in 1E 726 she returned with a powerful fleet determined to subjugate the island. Iniel was ultimately unsuccessful as the Stone-Nest people rallied against her invasion and forced her forces to retreat. However, during her ill-fated campaign, Iniel discovered the dark citadel of Mor Naril, an abandoned Daedric temple city, and plundered some of its necromantic secrets.[2] Ever since Iniel's discovery in Mor Naril, House Corelanya had been divided. Some rejected the darker Daedric Princes, while others were willing to seek their aid.[4]
Ultimately, a small Corelanya outpost endured on the island. Although Iniel never succeeded in subduing the native Argonians, she had established the foundations of a fortified haven on Solstice. Corelanya merchant ships continued to visit the island from time to time, trading with the cautious and watchful Argonian inhabitants.[5] Tuniria was one of the earliest Corelanyan settlements established on Solstice, though the exact nature of Iniel's connection to it is unclear.[6]
KinladyEdit
Shortly after returning to Hammerfell, Iniel ascended to the position of kinlady.[2] She led the Corelanya Clan during the ninth century of the First Era.[1][7] Iniel's rule was known for its strength and uncompromising nature, but her authoritarian style estranged many of Clan Corelanya's allies. Rumors also circulated regarding her dealings with darker Daedric patrons. In 1E 808, the Corelanyas faced a formidable new threat at Cape Shira, one that demanded more support than Kinlady Iniel had.[2] The third wave of the Yokudan Ra Gada, led by Grandee Yaghoub, sailed from the Yath and founded the realm of Sentinel, establishing a powerful presence right on the doorstep of Salas En.[8][2] This warrior wave of Yokudans, known as the Ra Gada, landed on the shores of Hammerfell.[9] With the wars against the Lefthanded Elves in Yokuda still fresh in their minds, they set out to eradicate the Corelanya Elves wherever they found them.[10] A Yokudan colony from the island of Yath was largely responsible for the attacks on the Corelanya, eventually displacing them from the site.[8]
Kinlady Iniel showed no willingness to accommodate her new neighbors, just as the Ra Gada were unwilling to overlook a kingdom of Daedra-worshipping mer in lands they sought to claim. For years, the Corelanyas protected the approaches to Salas En through powerful magic and covert raids. Ra Gada forces were hindered by sandstorms, tricked by mirages, and attacked by summoned Daedra. Although the proud warriors of Sentinel came to despise the "accursed city," the Corelanya defenses held strong for many years.[2]
By 1E 853, the Yokudans were led by King Xakhwan, who in a final push to drive the Corelanya from Hammerfell, sent his two sons to kill their leader.[7][2] Corelanya's illusions and stealth could not withstand such a direct and overwhelming assault. In desperation, Kinlady Iniel unleashed her darkest and most feared magic, the necromancy she had discovered in Mor Naril during her youth. She invoked Molag Bal's power, raising the falled warriors to fight repedeately in her defence.[2]
Prince Haqmir and Sameer led the charge into a valley known as the Ash'abah Pass, and killed Iniel during the battle. However, she tricked them.[1][3] The Corelanya deceived the Yokudans into leaving King Xakhwan vulnerable. She had the most powerful of her necromancers Venerien infiltrate the king's palace, kill him,[2] and then reanimate his corpse to use against the Yokudans.[3][11][12] Yet even this desperate tactic could not save Salas En. Kinlady Iniel was slain, and her city was laid to waste. Only a few of her compatriots managed to escaped the descruction of Salas En.[2]
LegacyEdit
In the months following Kinlady Iniel's defeat, Ra Gada warbands swept across Hammerfell, hunting down Corelanya havens and slaughtering all who were found. No quarter was asked for or given. Although Kinlady Iniel left no direct heirs, her cousin Earlenque Corelanya rose to assume the mantle of leadership. Stories of Kinlady Iniel's Daedric alliances and blatant use of necromancy had followed the Corelanyas back to Summerset, severely damaging their standing with High King Naurnindon, which eventually led to their exodus to Solstice, the island Iniel discovered.[13]
As late as 2E 582, carved amethyst intaglios depicting Kinlady Iniel fighting the sons of King Xakhwan could be found on the isle of Solstice.[14] Iniel features prominently in History of Clan Corelanya, authored by Regent Karinwe, the leader of Clan Corelanya during the Interregnum.[2]
