Moonmont is an ancient Khajiit temple in the southern edge of Reaper's March, in the province of Valenwood. It is sacred to worshippers of Jode and Jone,[1] the twin moons of the Lunar Lattice.[2] In Reaper's March, it is where the moons' light is focused the most, even referred by the First Mane as the "heart of lunar light."[3] Pilgrims from all over flock here to bask in the light while the temple is overseen by the Two-Moons Clergy.[1][4] Moonmont is built on a hill called the Mount of the Moons.[5]
HistoryEdit
When Moonmont was built is unknown, but it has existed in olden times. Back then, the wall carvings and adornments would "sing" of the Two-Moons Dance, and precious stones inlaid in intricate plaques would "speak" to Jode and Jone.[3] The main temple is located in the center of the area, with four beacons surrounding it.[6] Several artifacts associated with the Manes are kept here, such as the Gavel of the Hallowed, from the temple's early years[5] and the Ring of Rid-Thar-ri'Datta.[7]
In 2E 582, Reaper's March was in turmoil as the West Weald Legion and Stonefire Cult wreaked havoc across the region. With the flow of pilgrims cut from the temple, the clergy was forced to abandon the premises until it calmed down.[1] Some monks decided to stay,[6] however, after the Dark Mane was separated from Mane Akkhuz-ri,[8] he and his Dro-m'Athra warriors invaded Moonmont, killed most of its remaining monks and locked himself inside the temple, corrupting it with their dark magic.[6] The Lunar Champions, Khali and Shazah, and their Moon Hallowed arrived not long after and prayed at the four beacons, breaking the ward that closed the temple. Inside, they re-focused the moonlight on the altars of the moons, only to be ambushed by the Dark Mane. The Moon Hallowed defeated the Dark Mane but had to make a choice. Which one of the Lunar Champions had to contain the Dark Mane in them, while the other had to continue on the Paths to become the new Mane. How they chose is unknown, but the one who mantled the Dark Mane was sealed below Moonmont indefinitely.[9]
Around that same time, a Khajiit con-man named Jurak-dar tried to steal the Ring of Rid-Thar-ri'Datta from Moonmont but was caught by a priestess. However, it is unknown if he ran away with it or if the priestess kept it safe in Moonmont.[10] The Twilight Cantors with an inquisitor from the Torval Curiata came to Moonmont to investigate a "falling star" somewhere in the temple grounds. With help from an adventurer, they found an ancient Khajiit necromancer awake in his tomb named Zerith-var.[11]
During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the village of Moonmont was an active settlement. It was ruled by Lord Ancher and had a rivalry with Lynpar March and Stone Fell.[12] Moonmont was neighbored by several settlements such as Eldenroot to the south, Karthdar Square to the east, Silvenar to the west-northwest, and Stone Fell to the north.[13]
