When you reach him, he will appear to be injured. Brendar was chasing after an apparent grave robber who turned out to much more dangerous than he thought.

"Thank Kyne someone came. I thought I'd die down here. I was surprised I even woke up at all. Did my sister send you to find me?"

If Malma has asked you to look for Brendar, you can say:

She did. She said you came in here after someone.
"That's right. I thought he was just another grave robber. We run them out of Ivarstead from time to time. I was wrong. He's working some dark magic here. Experimenting on the living and the dead alike. Someone has to stop him."
Do you know what he's after?
"I heard him muttering something about reanimation. Something about a curse that keeps the draugr alive. Maybe he's searching for the knowledge of those ancient rites, though I can't say why. But he's killing innocent people. We can't let that go on."
I'll stop him.

If you stumbled upon him during your adventuring, you can say:

I'm just passing through.
"Passing through? A tomb? Well, I hope you aren't here to rob my ancestors. If you are one of those adventuring types, maybe you can help. I followed a strange man down here only to be captured by him. He's doing something ā€¦ unsavory here."
What do you mean?
"Necromancy is foul enough, but it's something more he's after. He's experimenting on the living, too. I was likely next in line. I don't know what his goal is and I don't care. You have to stop him before he kills more innocents."
I'll find him.

After you agree to hunt down the necromancer, you can ask Brendar some questions before heading off.

"He went further into the barrow. Be careful. I'll be fine on my own. Put an end to this, and find me in Ivarstead after you do. I owe you a debt for helping me."
Why aren't the draugr attacking you?
"I don't know how, but the necromancer did something to them. It's like they know those of us he captured are for him and him alone. They didn't attack any of us. I guess that's one thing I can be grateful for, but I still want the bastard dead."
Can you make it out of here?
"Yes, yes. Things are fuzzy, but I think I have the strength to make it back to Ivarstead. You just worry about that necromancer."

Once you have defeated the necromancer, you will return to the surface where Brendar will be waiting for you outside of The Horker's Tusk Tavern and will thank you for dealing with the necromancer:

"You made it out. That's good to see. What of the necromancer?"
The necromancer is dead.
"Then all of Ivarstead owes you thanks. He could've been the end of this village if left to this own devices. Here, it's not much, but take it as a token of my appreciation."

After his rescue, Brendar will thank you again for your efforts:

"You've made Ivarstead safer for all, and for that you'll always find welcome here."
