Knowing Your Computer's HardwareEdit

It is essential to know what your hardware is before you can use this page. The following sections detail the various steps that allow you to determine your system's hardware specifications, depending on what operating system you are using.

WindowsEdit

On Windows systems, the easiest way to identify your video hardware is to run the dxdiag program, also known as the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. To do this:

  • On Windows 7, click the Start button and type in dxdiag directly in the search box at the bottom of the start menu that pops up, and hit enter.
  • On Windows 8, right-click anywhere on the Start screen and select "All Apps" in the lower-right. From there, type "dxdiag" (ignoring the "No apps match your search" message) to search for it. When you've typed the entire word, it'll show up as an app and you can click on it to launch it.
  • On Windows 10 and Windows 11, follow the same steps as for Windows 7, or press the Win + R keys on your keyboard to open the Run dialog, type dxdiag into the text box, and press Enter.

You may be asked if you want to check for WHQL digital signatures. You don't need to for this, so click "No". Once you're in the tool, on the first screen (System) there will be a tab called System Information. Within this tab will be your processor and memory information. Under the tab 'Display' will be the information about your video card, in the Device box.

macOSEdit

On a Mac, open the Apple menu in the top left corner of the menu bar, and click About This Mac. A small window will pop up showing your Mac's model name, processor, memory size, and the version of macOS you are using. Click on the button that says More info... in that window to display the detailed system specifications of your Mac.
