The White Mask of MerienEdit

If you approach him, you will overhear him begging while tied up:

"You can't just let my village burn."

Speaking to him:

"Please, they won't listen to me. It's true that I used to run with the Red Rooks, but I quit! I hate all the chaos they're causing in Glenumbra.
Now I just want to help save my town, but the guards don't believe me."
Why are you tied up?
"The guards caught me sneaking around. They don't believe I'm trying to save the village.
The Bloodthorn are gathering the villagers at the docks for sacrifice. They kill them and raise them as zombies! I don't want my friends to end up like that!"
How can I help?
"My father's a mage. His signature spell is a spell of hiding that I know can protect the villagers. If you can reach our house and prepare the spell, I can rescue the villagers and meet you there.
You just need to convince Dame Clarique to free me."
Tell me more about this spell.
"It's called Merien's White Mask. My father loves to name his spells after himself.
When cast on a building, the spell cloaks everyone inside in a shroud of misdirection. Makes anyone who looks see something other than what's really there."
White mask? What does that mean?
"My father used to scare me with the spell. He'd cast it on his workshop and make himself look like a hooded specter in a white mask. We argued about it. A lot.
I never found it as funny as he did."
Can't I just find your father?/Where can I find your father?
"I don't know where he is. He was in the village before the attack and I fear the worst.
My father and I, we didn't always get along. That's why I joined the Red Rooks in the first place. I just hope he's still alive."
"You'll find Dame Clarique up the road. She's the knight in charge of this Lion Guard unit. Since she's the one who had me tied up, you'll need to convince her to let me go."

If you persuade Dame Clarique to let Tamien accompany you, he'll come running up to your position and say:

Tamien Sellan: "Thanks for giving me this chance. I'm going to sneak past the Bloodthorn now. Please don't be alarmed."

With that warning, he vanishes in a puff of smoke.

If you were unable to persuade Clarique:

"I honestly didn't expect Dame Clarique to let me go. You're my only hope now. My father's notes should be in our house. It's the one on the hill.
Get the villagers to safety and then cast the spell. I'm sorry I can't help."

Cutting Off the SourceEdit

If Tamien accompanied you:

"I'm glad to see the spell worked. That should keep these villagers safe.
I heard you talking to my father, though. I hope you're not going to pursue his foolish plan. It's too dangerous!"

If you left Tamien with Clarique:

"Dame Clarique didn't expect you to go charging in here. She cut me free and told me to follow you. I heard you talking to my father. I hope you're not going to pursue his foolish plan.
It's too dangerous!"
You don't think his plan will work?
"Oh, it'll work. But it's idiotic. As usual, my father only takes into account the big picture."
What do you mean?
"He's going to collapse his prison! I'm not an expert in pocket planes, but that doesn't sound healthy. He's going to kill himself to stop the ritual!
I can't let that happen. I'm going after him."
You're on your own. Glenumbra is more important. I'm going to stop the Bloodthorns.
"I understand. This is my battle to fight.
Go. Stop the Bloodthorn. I'll free my father and bring him back here. Meet me here after you destroy the Bloodthorn boats."
I'll help save your father. We'll deal with the Bloodthorns later.
"I owe you, friend. We'll find a way to deal with the cultists.
The Bloodthorn took control of a house in the center of the village. That's where we'll begin to search for my father. I'll get some things together and meet you there.
"

Merien's PlanEdit

If you decided to burn the Bloodthorn's boats as Merien suggested, he'll add:

"Go. Stop the Bloodthorn. I'll go after my father."

Return to the Sellan House and you'll find Tamien kneeling over his father's body:

"I … I failed him."
What happened to your father?
"I used his spell, the one he always used to scare me with, to slip in unnoticed and rescue him.
As we made our escape, we were overrun by banekin. Father cast some kind of spell and I blacked out. When I woke up, I was here and he was … there."
I'm sorry, Tamien.
"I failed him, but you didn't. You stopped the Bloodthorn cultists, just like he wanted.
I want to bury my father. Could you speak to Dame Clarique for me? I need a moment alone."

If you speak to him before leaving, he'll only repeat:

"Please, go talk to Dame Clarique. I need a moment alone."

Tamien's PlanEdit

If you agreed to help him rescue his father, he'll add:

"Make your way to the house the Bloodthorn have been using. I'll collect some things and meet you there."

Once you've returned with Merien, he'll be waiting for you in the basement:

"You made it! I was worried about you."
Where have you been?
"Bloodthorn cultists followed you into the house. I got the drop on them and guarded the portal until you returned. They're upstairs. See for yourself."
What are you going to do now?
"Now that my father is safe, I want to get out of Glenumbra. I'm through with this place. And I don't want Dame Clarique to put me back in chains.
You should go speak to her. I need some time with my father."

If you speak to him before leaving, he'll only repeat:

"I need to talk with my father. Go ahead and let Dame Clarique know what happened."

Legitimate InterestsEdit

Find Tamien in the upper room of the Crosswych Inn. He will be murmuring:

"I need to figure out how to deal with these Red Rook criminals."

If you haven't started the quest through either Octin or Marayna Murric, yet, and you've helped Tamien before, he'll greet you with:

"I'm glad to see you again. And I can certainly use your help.
I came to Crosswych when I heard the Red Rooks had taken over the town. After what happened at Eagle's Brook, I vowed to fight the Red Rooks with every fiber of my being."

If you've never helped Tamien before, he'll greet you with:

"I won't rest until I see the Red Rooks answer for their crimes. They've taken enough from me. They've taken enough from everyone."

Either way, you can respond:

What are the Red Rooks up to now?
"The Red Rooks have taken over Crosswych. I plan to help these people get back their town. I've roused some of them, but we still don't have the numbers to face the bandits.
My … revenge … starts here. I will find a way to make the bandits pay."
What's the next step?
"The people are afraid. They need to see that the town leaders are going to take a stand.
We need the support of the town council. The few that haven't been dragged off to the mines have to show the people how to stand up to these villains."
I can talk to the councilors.

If you've already started the quest through a villager, he'll say:

"I regret the day I ever involved myself with these Red Rook bastards.
By the Eight, this ends here!"
I'm here to help the resistance.
"We could use the help. These damned Red Rooks! They destroyed my town and now they're trying to take over Crosswych.
I made a vow. I will have my revenge. I'm going to rally the people of Crosswych to take back their town."
What do you need me to do?
"The townsfolk are scared. If they stick their necks out, they end up as slaves in the mines. Or worse.
We need the support of the town council. The few that haven't been dragged off to the mines need to show the people how to stand up to these curs."
I'll talk to the councilors.

Despite how you started the quest, you can ask questions about enlisting the help of the townsfolk:

"We need the support of the town council. Without them, the rest of the townsfolk will be too afraid to fight back."
Can I ask a few questions?
"Of course. I'll answer what I can."
Any idea who's in charge of these bandits?
"Sternis Gelves. He's the real threat. Without him, the Red Rooks are just disorganized thugs looking for pockets to pick and purses to snatch.
It was his idea to take over Crosswych. He's building an empire here."
Which councilors should I talk to?
"The most prominent of the remaining councilors are Councilors Virgile, Donella, and Theodore. Look for them around town and convince them to help us or we're finished before we even get started."

If you helped him in Eagle's Brook:

How are things in Eagle's Brook now?
"About what you'd expect. It weighs on me.
That's why I made my way to Crosswych. I think I can help the people here."

If this is your first meeting with him:

You mentioned revenge.
"So many people…they died when the Bloodthorn cult devastated Eagle's Brook.
In return for my cooperation, the Red Rooks promised to protect my father and the people of Eagle's Brook from the Bloodthorns. They lied. For that, they need to pay."

After convincing the councilors to join the cause, speak to Sellan back at the inn:

"I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the people have begun to rally around the idea of resisting the Red Rooks.
The bad news is the Red Rooks have taken notice."
The councilors support the resistance.
"This is just the thing we need to inspire the people.
Now the resistance can get to work on getting rid of the Red Rooks."

The Miners' LamentEdit

If you don't start the quest, he will say:

"Those poor people in the mines."

He will need you to rescue the enslaved miners in the mines to strengthen the resistance:

"Anyone who stands up to Sternis Gelves ends up in the Crosswych mines. He works his prisoners to death down there.
We need to close the mines and take that resource away from the Red Rooks."
Tell me about the mines.
"The Red Rooks took control of the mines when they arrived. They work the miners night and day. And they also use the mines as a prison for anyone who causes trouble.
Councilor Lia, Smith Suriel, and Len the Innkeeper were all sent into the mines."
Do you want me to get them out of there?
"That would be perfect! If you can free Len, Suriel, and Councilor Lia, the entire town will gain confidence.
Let them know we're organizing. Maybe help some of the miners, as well. Then meet me behind the inn when you're finished."
I can do that.

He suggest either infiltration or killing Red Rooks out in the open to send a message:

"Talk to any miners you can get close to without arousing suspicion. Let them know we're organizing.
Or just kill the Red Rooks in the mine. The miners will try to escape if you clear a path for them."
I'll do what I can to help in the mines.

If you've completed The End of Extortion, he will add:

"Your actions will raise the town's morale, I'm sure of it.
I heard you spoke to Marent Ergend. That means we'll soon have more strong hands to help us oust these black-hearted rogues."

Continue to speak to him and he'll say:

"How many innocent people died in those mines? The Red Rooks must pay!"
How can I help the miners?
"Talk to any miners…" <Same dialogue as above>

Rescue the citizens from the mine you can find him behind the inn:

"I've heard your praises from a number of rescued miners. Well done."
I also killed Foreman Blaise.
"Blaise? Dead? That's good news.
I've sent some of the miners to Councilor Virgile to recover. As soon as they're able, they'll return to the mine and clear out the rest of the Red Rooks. Well done, my friend."

Crosswych ReclaimedEdit

If you haven't start quest, he will comment:

"We're ready to strike back."

The resistance has grown strong and now you will need to kill the Red Rook leader to regain control of the town:

"It's time. The people of Crosswych have taken up arms and are ready to retake their town.
But first, Sternis Gelves must die."
Where is Sternis Gelves?
"He's taken over the mayor's house. Since the resistance started, he never leaves the place. You'll have to fight through his personal guards to reach him.
Fortunately, you'll have some help, if you want."
What do you mean?
"The resistance has grown, thanks to you. If you want help, use this whistle in front of the mayor's house. Anyone nearby will come to help.
Find me when Gelves is finished. Meanwhile, we'll start removing the Rooks out here. We've got them on edge."
I'll go find Gelves.

Once you've taken care of Gelves, you'll find Sellan back in the inn:

"Thanks to your efforts, order and peace are restored. Crosswych will be back to normal in no time."
Sternis Gelves is dead.
"At last, Sternis Gelves has paid for his crimes against Crosswych, Eagle's Brook, and my family.
This town—and I—owe you for that."

Finish speaking to Sellan and you'll hear the councilor's make plans to prevent this from happening again:

Councilor Theodore: "Time for me to head back to the mine. We'll take care of any Red Rook stupid enough to stick around. Ha!"
Councilor Lia: "We need to make plans. This sort of thing must never happen to Crosswych again."
Tamien Sellan: "Perhaps I could help you with that."
Councilor Lia: "I was rather hoping you'd say that. Come, we should get started right away."

Lia and Sellan go upstairs and fade from sight.

Lady Laurent's FavorEdit

He can later be encountered once more as a hireling of Lady Clarisse Laurent while she excavates Salas En in the Alik'r Desert. Tamien has developed a rivalry with Stibbons. He can initially be found perched high on some scaffolding.

Before starting Lady Laurent's Favor, he'll only say:

"Sorry, friend. This is my perch. If you want to get a bird's eyes view of the ruins, you'll have to climb up on those rocks over there."

After Stibbons asks you to find Lady Laurent's tools so he can bring them back to her, you have the option of speaking with Tamien.

His greeting to you will depend on if you previously helped him in Crosswych.

Completed Crosswych Objective:
Otherwise:
"Well, well, well! If it isn't my old friend from Crosswych. Let me guess—Lady Laurent has you helping clean up this mess she made?
Or is it Stibbons? The bootless coward. He's hoping Lady Laurent will forgive him."
"What do we have here? Looks like someone else who knows how to swing a weapon. Let me guess—you're helping Lady Laurent clean up this mess?
Or is it Stibbons? The bootless coward. He's hoping Lady Laurent will forgive him for starting all this."
Stibbons asked me to recover her tools.
"Did he? I'm surprised he could get that out through the whimpering and whining!
Lady Laurent already has someone to recover her tools, and you would recover them and give Stibbons the credit?"
So does that mean you're gathering the tools?
"Just following orders. Even before this, Stibbons couldn't keep up, so Lady Laurent hired me.
I was just getting a bird's eye view before getting to work. Say though, if you were going to save Stibbons the trouble, why not help me instead?"
Why would I do that?
"Well for one thing, I'm better-looking. For another, I'm actually getting paid.
Stibbons was always just a glorified slave. Help me get the tools and I'll cut you in."
I'll have to think about it.
"Don't think too long. I'll go down there and get the tools myself if I have to.
They're in backpacks, by the way. I bet Stibbons didn't even tell you that."
Have you collected any tools already?
"I was wondering if you were going to ask that.
Yeah, I snatched up a few toolbags earlier, but there's no reason for me to give them to you, is there?"
[Persuade] I might as well hang on to all of them.
"I suppose if you want to lug around the extra weight, I won't complain.
Once you've got them all, though, just remember to bring them back to me, not Stibbons."
I'll take the tools and go then. Thanks.
It's good to see you again. How's the mercenary business been? (Appears if previously met)
"It could be worse. Lady Laurent pays well and she's got a pretty ambitious travel schedule, so I'm getting to see places I'd never dreamed of.
Can't say this desert's one of the highlights though."

If you managed to persuade him, Tamien will give you some of the tool bags he already recovered. Once you have collected enough, you can choose to bring them back to Tamien or Stibbons.

Bringing them to Tamien:

"I watched you rummaging around out there in the ruins. If you had been in trouble, I would've had your back, just so you know.
I'm guessing you've gathered all the tools by now?"
Yes. I have the tools right here.
"All right. It's time to get paid then. Give me the tools and I'll go ahead and give you half of what Lady Laurent promised.
I think that's being pretty generous of me."
Here you go.
"Here's half, along with my gratitude—which can be quite valuable in certain circles!
I hope we cross paths again. Next time, I'll be the one doing you a good turn. You can count on it."
I'm not ready to hand them over just yet.
"You're not? Tell me you're not going to give them to that sniveling Stibbons.
Even if Lady Laurent does decide to forgive him, it's just a matter of time before he makes another mess. I'm not going to stick around to see it."

If you choose to give the tools to Tamien but haven't turn in the quest, he will say:

"You are a noble spirit and a brave soul, my friend.
You've done me a good turn here, and by exposing Stibbons' uselessness, you've done Lady Laurent a favor too."
I expect my fair share of the reward too. (Leads to quest completion dialogue)

After you have given the tools to Tamien, he will admit his pity for Stibbons.

"Poor, craven Stibbons. The truth is, I almost feel for him. Almost."

However, if you gave the tools to Stibbons:

"I just keep asking myself, why in Oblivion would you help Stibbons?
I have to believe that you were motivated by some deluded sense of pity. I feel sorry... for both of you."
