A gang of vampires led by Balandrus, the Terror of the Weald, has taken control of the town of Sutch. Maerenah, a cured vampire and former member of the gang, needs help restoring peace to the town and putting an end to the Terror.

Detailed WalkthroughEdit

Taking the road west through the West Weald, you encounter a Redguard warrior named Maerenah near the Sutch wayshrine. She warns against entering the town as it has been overrun by a vampire bandit gang. On questioning, you discover that Maerenah used to be a member of this gang, but left and was cured of vampirism. She came to the town to check on her old friend Tham, the innkeeper, only to discover that Balandrus, the leader of the vampire gang, had also returned looking for her. On agreeing to help, Maerenah suggests that you should first check on Tham at the Sutch Tavern.

Search the Town

You enter Sutch, encountering small groups of vampires, vampiric senche, coagulants, and bloodfiends around the town. On entering the tavern, a couple of vampires flee, but there is no sign of Tham. Searching for clues, you discover signs of struggle and a cryptic note left behind. Maerenah realizes that Tham left this note for her, and deduces that the survivors have taken refuge in the vault of the Sutch Depository across the street, so you head there next.

Entering the Depository, Maerenah will comment that you need to find the spare key for the vault. This can be found in a small locked box on the floor behind the clerk's desk, up against the wall. Once you have the key, head to the stairs down to the vault. Inside the vault you encounter the town's alchemist, Rosalyn Metrick, and her son Abel. She tells you that her husband, Grivier, has been leading the survivors to safety in small groups. However, he has not returned since he set out with the last group, which included Tham at Grivier's insistence. She also mentions that you can find alchemical oil and combustion chambers in her Apothecary Shop, which can be used to make explosives.

Leaving the Depository, you follow a trail of clues through the town to the road leading west. The final clue, found beside a couple of dead bodies, is a note indicating that Grivier has been collaborating with Balandrus in order to protect his wife and son. You meet up with Maerenah inside a nearby barn, where she has found Grivier; he was tied up and left there by the vampires after they had collected the last group including Tham. Maerenah asks you to question Grivier, as she is afraid she will simply snap his neck. Grivier reveals that Balandrus came to Sutch looking for Maerenah. When he did not find her, he took it out on the towns people, stock-piling weapons around town and turning those he could into vampires or bloodfiends to create an army. It is left to you to decide Grivier's fate - either leave him tied up for the vampires, or free him and let him run off.

Maerenah suggests that you find the ingredients mentioned by Rosalyn, so you head east up the street to her Apothecary. This is easy to find as there is a conspicuous purple-pink lamp illuminating the doorway. Head inside to find the ingredients: the combustion chambers are located in a wooden crate up against the far wall from the entrance, while the alchemical oil is in the large barrel on top of one of the central counters. Once you have the ingredients, head back outside and follow the quest markers to locate the weapon caches. Destroy these by pouring the oil on them, and then head to the mine to find Tham and deal with the army of bloodfiends and vampires that Balandrus is building.

Enter Sutch Mine

Sutch Mine is located on the south-east side of the town, and is a fairly linear map with a couple of short branches closed off by double doors; these are where the bloodfiends are being kept, and are inaccessible to the player. On entry, Maerenah notes that you can find the dens simply by following the sound of their wails. Proceed forwards through the mine and approach the first pair of wooden doors. Place a combustion chamber in front of the doors when prompted, and stand back; Maerenah will trigger an explosion to collapse the den entrance. Continue down the main path, taking out the vampires, vampiric senches, and coagulants along the way. Eventually you will see a second pair of wooden doors leading to a second den; destroy these the same way as the first set.

After a brief conversation with Maerenah, it will be time to finally deal with Balandrus and his three lieutenants. Continue through the mine until you reach the doors to Balandrus' Lair, and enter. You will arrive just in time to see Balandrus complete turning Tham into a vampire. AFter a very short exchange between Balandrus and Maerenah, it is time to put an end to the Terror of the Weald. As the vampire leader, Balandrus is a very tall and heavily armoured giant, wielding a two-handed weapon. In addition to an over-head smash and an area sweep attack, he will summon his three lieutenants and more coagulants at various stages of the fight. This can result in a large health draining area-of-effect spell around him, although this can be offset by passive and combat-based active health regeneration skills (such as Leaching Blows). Balandrus will also engage in a continuous ground-punching attack that dislodges large rocks from the ceiling.

Once Balandrus and his lieutenants are all dead, Maerenah will follow Tham out through the rear exit of the mine; follow them to return to the countryside around Sutch near the Sutch wayshrine. Maerenah will ask you to talk to Tham, who is sitting on the ground in a confused state and very definitely showing signs of vampirism. After you have talked with Tham, speak to Maerenah one last time to complete the quest and receive your reward.

NotesEdit

  • Full quest dialogue is available on the character pages for Maerenah, Rosalyn, and Grivier.
  • Although you can enter Rosalyn's Apothecary store at any time, the alchemical oil and combustion chambers can only be collected when you have that quest objective active.
  • Your choice of fate for Grivier does not seem to have any consequences other than the ensuing dialog.
  • The mine exit is on the edge of the site of the Sutch Mirrormoor Incursion. As such, you may see the early stage spawns for an incursion appear further down the slope from the mine exit, although they should not interfere with the final dialogue for the quest.
