Thonnir

Thonnir is a Nord lumberjack living in Morthal with his son, Virkmund. From 8am he can be found working at Jorgen's mill, and from 11pm he can be found sleeping in his house located not far from the Thaumaturgist's Hut. He will sell lumberHF to you if Hearthfire is installed.

Among the other recent odd occurrences in this small township is the disappearance of his wife, Laelette, although according to him it's simply a case of her abandoning her family to join the Stormcloaks. When the truth is eventually discovered, he forms a posse with other Morthal residents to take revenge, but is the only one who doesn't chicken out in the end. You have a choice to take him with you into Movarth's Lair, or to let him go back to Morthal. However, you don't need to worry too much about him as he is essential and can't be killed.

Afterwards, Thonnir returns to his simple life, although he has yet to tell his son what really happened to his mother.

Thonnir wears a set of farm clothes along with a pair of boots. He wields a steel war axe and carries the key to his house, a torch, and a selection of common loot and gold.

DialogueEdit

His greetings:

"Keep your wits about you. Morthal's hardly a safe place."
"I'm just a poor man trying to make a living. I'd leave Morthal were it in my power."
"This damned war has cost us... me... everything."
"My boy's to grow up without a mother? What life is that? It's not right, I tell you."
"Hasn't been seen for a while. She just vanished without a trace."

ConversationsEdit

Morthal's citizens arguing with Aslfur

Thonnir can initially be found outside Highmoon Hall having the following argument:

Jorgen: "What's the Jarl going to do about it?"
Thonnir: "How are we supposed to feel safe in our own homes?"
Aslfur: "Please, enough already! I have told Igrod of your concerns. She'll look after you. Please, go back to your business."
Jorgen: "We've no need for wizards in our midst!"
Thonnir: "Morthal has enough problems as it is!"
Jorgen: "Bah, it's no use. Let's get back to it then."

Quest-Related EventsEdit

Laid to RestEdit

Once you agree to find Helgi, Thonnir will start looking for his wife, Laelette. If he's spoken to during this time, he'll say:

"Have you seen Laelette? Have you seen my wife?"

After finding Helgi and dispatching Laelette, Thonnir will come running up to the scene and make a grim discovery:

"Laelette! She's dead! Ysmir's beard! She's...she's a vampire!"

At this point, you can talk to a saddened Thonnir, who'll say:

"She's dead. Laelette is dead."
What can you tell me about your wife?
"Laelette? I thought she left to join the Stormcloaks. Ah! My poor Laelette!"
Did you notice anything strange before she left?
"She began to spend a lot of time with Alva. Yet just a week before, she despised her. In fact, the night she disappeared, she was supposed to meet Alva. Alva told me later that she never showed up. I never got to tell her good bye."
I think they may have met after all.
"You think Alva...but that means... Ye gods! You think Alva is a vampire?"
It's a possibility we can't ignore.
"No! You're wrong. You must be wrong. Laelette may have met her fate out in the marsh. I refuse to believe Alva had anything to do with this. There is no way you can prove it to the Jarl."

He then ends conversation by saying:

"I hope Alva is not what you think."

If spoken to after this point, he'll be curious and ask you:

"Have you found out anything about Alva?"

At any point, you can also ask him to repeat what he knew about his wife's disappearance:

Tell me again about your wife?
"I thought Laelette left to join the war. I hadn't heard from her since she left."

Once you have shown Morthal's jarl the evidence of Alva's vampirism, she will gather a band of able-bodied townsfolk in order to help you clear out Movarth's Lair. Thonnir will be at the forefront of gathering these people.

Thonnir: "I'm going to Movarth's Lair to kill that monster. Are you with me?"
Lami: "Yes!"
Jorgen: "Yeah!"
Lurbuk: "Take us!"
Benor: "Yeah!"
Thonnir: "Kill the vampire!"
Benor: "Kill him!"
Jorgen: "Let's kill him!"
Lurbuk: "Destroy him!"
Lami: "Kill him!"
Thonnir: "Take us to Movarth's Lair!" (to you)

Once the mob arrives at the lair, however, their tune changes remarkably:

The mob outside Movarth's Lair
Lami: "Um...this place looks dangerous."
Jorgen: "Yeah. Kind of scary too."
Benor: "And it's full of vampires?"
Thonnir: "Cowards! We must kill the vampires. We have to make them pay!"
Lurbuk: "Of course. But why not let him/her go in first?"
Thonnir: "Morthal is full of cowards! Let's go kill that monster." (to you)

After this, all the townsfolk will return to the safety of their town, leaving just you and Thonnir.

I have to go into the vampire's lair alone?
"They may be cowards, but I'm not. I'll go with you."
I think it would be better if you waited here.
"I suppose you're right. I'm not a fighting man. Go, and avenge my Laelette for me."
You're a brave man. Let's go.
"Lead on."

If you let Thonnir accompany you through the lair, he will fight alongside you until Movarth lies dead, at which point he will make his way back to Morthal. If instead you choose to go in alone, he will do so after your conversation. Once the lair is cleared, however, Thonnir will no longer speak of anything related to the events that just transpired.

NotesEdit

  • Once you have accepted him to accompany you, he will not part your company until the quest is complete, even if you choose the conversation option "I think it would be better you waited here." This could make him useful if you want or need an essential follower for other quests.
  • If you attack him (or accidentally strike him in combat) he will not accept a yield, and will continue to target you. As he is an essential NPC, this can make combat situations very precarious. If you do strike him, whether by accident or on purpose, the only way to prevent him from fighting you is to load a previous save, or by entering stopcombat command to Thonnir in console.

BugsEdit

  • Thonnir may get stuck in the lair and never leave after completing Laid to Rest.
    •   Stand outside the cave, enter prid 0001aa6b into the console, followed by moveto player, and Thonnir should appear next to you and then get back on his way to Morthal.
