Louis Letrush Clone Glitch

Details

The glitch produces multiple copies of Louis Letrush. The cause is currently unknown. This primarily occurs outside of Whiterun Stables.

Please submit your details, such as when you first noticed the glitch, where his clones appear, and at what point during the storyline and his related quest(s) it occurs. Also if possible please state whether his cloning occurred/remained following his death (if he has been killed) and whether his death was quest related or 'encouraged' by yourself.

Semi-Confirmed Details:

  • Glitch seems to depend on the completion of Letrush's related quest 'Promises to Keep', although the glitch has occurred even without receiving this quest.
  • Initial glitch cause is unknown
  • However further copies of Letrush cloned upon the use of carriages
  • It appears impossible to kill Letrush (and any of his clones), perhaps due to his essential status.

Discussion

This NPC has been multiplying like sheep in my game. Last time I checked there were 6 copies of him. --AlmightyCow 08:10, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

I've currently got four copies of him standing outside Whiterun Stables... I think it might be related to traveling to Whiterun on a carriage. Of course, I don't think he's supposed to be outside Whiterun Stables in the first place. I'm wondering if killing him and all his clones will fix the problem. 71.197.122.141 00:27, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
I encountered him almost right outside Alftand, right before a thug executed him while saying "Maven sends her regards, Letrush", and he was replying "No! I can give her money back", or something along those lines. Don't know what's up with that. — Unsigned comment by 46.9.246.31 (talk) at 01:31 on 21 November 2011
I also have multiple copies of Letrush, so far only noted outside of Whiterun Stables. I have completed the quest regarding Maven and Frost to Letrush's benefit.--82.47.112.108 23:44, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
I encountered three copies outside of Whiterun Stables. This was after I finished the Frost quest. I had told Maven of the plot but stole the horse and gave it to Letrush. I have not travelled by carriage, but I have purchased multiple horses from Whiterun stables. 14.200.35.213 13:24, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
I think the glitch is related to how many horses the player has/has owned; every time I buy or just ride a new horse, another appears outside of Whiterun stables. Also, I've killed all of them at one point, but they just keep coming back. — Unsigned comment by 216.230.3.34 (talk) at 16:10 on 22 November 2011
Don't think so. The only horse I've ever ridden is the one I stole for Letrush. El Duderino 05:50, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

() I don't recommend saving in front of them. I saved in front of a pack of Letrushs(heard?) with the intent to kill them but ran into a problem with Whiterun guards and thought I could just hop back to the save point but the glitch had corrupted the save file. Now it's just loading forever. I think this should be called the Agent Letrush Glitch, because with enough time that world will be filled with letrushs — Unsigned comment by 75.110.12.83 (talk) at 00:43 on 23 November 2011

I encountered him again on the path near The Lover Stone. He sure gets around. — Unsigned comment by 99.40.50.197 (talk) at 03:26 on 24 November 2011
I have 2.5 of him outside of whiterun and i think there might be a third(whole) following me around because i keep seing him in random places and he tries to kill me. none of them die. — Unsigned comment by 174.253.244.6 (talk) at 06:12 on 24 November 2011
I've got 3 copies of him outside Whiterun Stables. I have already completed the quest in his benefit. I can rule out the carriage hypothesis, because I've never ridden in one. Maybe it has something to do with the quest ending. When I delivered Frost to him he didn't get on the horse but instead just ran off into the forest. I never killed him during the quest, but I've also noticed that my Letrushes can't be killed, I just tried killing them outside of Whiterun and they just kneel down, then get back up with full health. — Unsigned comment by 98.206.165.74 (talk) at 01:58 on 25 November 2011
I don't think riding in a carriage to Whiterun CAUSES the problem, but I can confirm it will add a clone every time. At least on 360.El Duderino 05:00, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
Found 3 copies of him outside the stables as soon as i came out of Whiterun, I was doing the brotherhood contract to kill the Khajit. — Unsigned comment by 174.88.135.70 (talk) at 05:11 on 26 November 2011
Definitely something wrong here, I've got 6, or 5.5 as some may put it... Same conditions as above: outside Whiterun stables after giving him the horse. Might be something to do with Frost itself? Maybe she was disabled somehow when Louis was still riding her, hence the half Louis, then keeps trying to get him whole and ending up creating a clone ~ Dwarfmp 06:02, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

() I completed his quest and gave him Frost, which he rode off on. He then appeared half-buried outside Whiterun stables. I got a thieves guild quest to pickpocket his sapphire from him and the quest marker pointed to Whiterun stables. While that quest was active, I saw him running around near Meridia's shrine until one of Maven's thugs caught up with him and killed him. The corpse had no sapphire though so I still had to go and pickpocket the sapphire from what I'm assuming is the original copy outside Whiterun stables. 81.168.123.143 15:19, 26 November 2011 (UTC)

I encountered a first copy at the Whiterun stables. Completed the quest in my favour: told Maven about the scheme, and later persuaded Letrush so I could keep the horse. Letrush ran off after concluding the quest. First copy encountered shortly after a thug attempted to exact revenge. --188.203.162.222 19:50, 26 November 2011 (UTC)
I have seen 2 copies of him, one was halfway in the ground — Unsigned comment by 71.104.152.176 (talk) at 06:12 on 1 December 2011
I've seen a thug and yet another Letrush, thug killed him. I've then disabled all the Letrushes at Whiterun because I was pretty sick of it. After that, I've seen yet a new conflict between a thug and a Letrush. What's next, another one asking me to steal a horse again? ~ Dwarfmp 20:38, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Everything was fine and i hadn't been back to whiterun since the stormcloak takeover, just been completing the thieve's guild missions, just came back to change a ledger and he's standing outside the stables with his clone and now i don't know what triggered it, the only strange thing that happened before was when i gave him Frost the horse he said thanks then ran away screaming, so naturally i just kept the horse. Untill now though i've just seen the one him outside the stables as normal. — Unsigned comment by 95.145.26.2 (talk) at 02:08 on 5 December 2011
I can't guarantee that this is the case, but what if, at the end of the quest, the game actually sets LeTrush as an owned horse if you don't pick Frost? That could cause his default location to be Whiterun Stables, and it could easily spawn new copies if it tries to clean up old copies of your horse but only finds ol' Louis. — Unsigned comment by 216.27.90.140 (talk) at 17:52 on 9 December 2011
I first saw Letrush after i had finished the Frost quest. I let him take the horse and didn't think about it. His horse Frost is always found at the riften stables for me. First part of the glitch I noticed was he spawned in front of the stables in White Run, but halfway in the ground. So I did what i always do when this happens to NPC's; I punched him. This got him at least standing on the ground. Hours turned into days. Today, I noticed a second Letrush standing in front of the stables. I haven't used the carriage for a long time now, so I can say that that doesn't have anything to do with it. I attacked one of the letrush's, only to discover he can't die. I tried the disable on the one standing in front of the stables (the one I had attacked ran away to the potato farm). The ID was 00019dca. The other guy, started attacking me again, so I disabled him in the console as well. His ID was ff00269f and I had to disable him twice before he actually disappeared. — Unsigned comment by 24.10.160.19 (talk) at 05:31 on 11 December 2011
My experience of this glitch: No Letrush problems until after completing the quest with Frost, which went without a hitch. Then he appears in horseriding position half-buried outside Whiterun. Then when I am on the road I get the random encounter in which Letrush is assassinated. Then he frightens the life out of me by materialising outside the Jark's house in Winterhold for no reason, after which he ran away into the distance. I suspect the problem lies in the programming for the random encounter in which he is killed, which for some reason isn't registering he is dead and keeps spawning him in random encounter hotspots. Ninepaw 14:09, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

() I followed Letrush at a distance after handing over Frost waiting for the inevitable wolves or bandits to kill him so that I could get Frost back. He died a few times and each time he got up and got back onto Frost. There was a final encounter where I found Frost by the side of the road so I waited. This time no Letrush. I looked for his body for hours and couldn't find it. I couldn't take Frost because she was still counted as stolen so I left her to her fate and the next time I visited Whiterun there was Letrush. No conversation just 'What is it?' The last time I checked Whiterun stables there were two of him standing and one in the ground up to his waist all saying 'What is it?'. I wonder if, as he seems to be unkillable whether the amount of clones that finally arrive is the amount of times he dies on his journey. — Unsigned comment by 46.208.188.248 (talk) at 14:04 on 18 December 2011

I've found Louis 3 times after I killed him. 1. 3 clones of him outside Whiterun stables during stormcloak attack. 2. Riften in the market place just standing there. #. Running on the road out side Rorikstead twoards the village.Rattigan IV 09:21, 20 December 2011 (UTC)
I've currently got two copies of this guy outside Whiterun stables, prior to the second copy appearing he was tuck up to his torso in the ground. Using 'disable' comand on a copy gets rid of his clone. — Unsigned comment by 94.193.199.93 (talk) at 14:02 on 21 December 2011
havent found a copy yet, but he is in front of the stable half buried underground. from his posture i suspect that he is riding frost. using detect life, i'm convince that frost is underground. maybe the glitch is in frost. i wanna try killing frost using the console and resurrect it again, but i'm still not confidence on doing it. is he suppose to run away with frost being chased by mercenary? i've been all over skyrim since my first encounter, and haven't found him anywhere else but the stable--120.166.5.151 23:16, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
It seems really related to number of owned horses which has died... i found 2 copies of him when i lost my first horse. Recently i've lost my 3rd horse and another copy of Louis has spawned outside stables.— Unsigned comment by 94.34.245.32 (talk) at 15:04 on 7 January 2012
(I've to correct myself... other two Louis have spawned without any dead horse in the meantime) — Unsigned comment by 94.34.246.213 (talk) at 19:12 on 24 January 2012
I have 1 in the ground and 3 standing next to him at the Whiterun stables. This is on a PC version. I don't believe it has anything to do with carriage rides but could be related to a quest although I have not done any quest for him. It appears a programming error related to him being stuck in the ground. The game script will often require him to be somewhere else and since the original, I suspect the one in the ground can not go there, the game generates a copy. The copy then later returns to the Whiterun stables resulting in the stuck copy and the extra version. This makes sense as the game would continue to determine the original is still present, stuck in the ground and will later ignore the presence of the duplicates until it must create another determined by script player location. Unless the game can support an indefinite instances of an NPC or reset the stuck one, it may break something as the game may reach a limit on how many copies can exist. The obvious fix would be to release the stuck original from the ground so the game can use him in the main script. One could, on the PC perhaps set the NPC to non essential and then kill all of them, dispose of the bodies, readd the NPC and reset its flag to essential, in theory. If any brave souls want to try this let us know if this works. — Unsigned comment by 75.110.205.31 (talk) at 15:35 on 15 January 2012
I first saw him stuck halfway in the ground so I just left him there, the next time I came by there was an extra but the original is still stuck halway in the ground. I've tried to kill him but the clones (now four of them) always seem to stop and attack me, so I can't kill nor pickpocket him. — Unsigned comment by 123.3.100.204 (talk) at 01:00 on 18 January 2012

() From some testing, I think I understand why Letrush clones himself. The original (refid 00019DCA) seems to run off to Whiterun on quest completion, at which point he supposedly should disable together with Frost. While the original Frost (refid 00097E1F) does so, the original Letrush does not. Based on the glitch where he does or does not mount Frost, he will be either standing there or saddled halfway underground depending on whether he's actually "mounted". I would guess we're supposed to meet him (copies, refid FFxxxxxx) around the world afterwards, but his script probably fails again making him (the new copy) return to Whiterun once more, leaving us with the steadily rising amount of Letrushes. I guess we'll know come 1.4, unless Bethsoft's fixed him themselves. 188.182.67.150 12:25, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Well well, something VERY interesting happened to me. After completing Promises to Keep (ratted him out to Maven, kept Frost for myself), I travelled to Whiterun and found Agent Letrush hanging there, not buried in the ground. So I came to the wiki to read a bit on this bug. It has been suggested above that he runs to Whiterun after he flees from the player at the end of the quest, so I decided to run along with him, but a bit after Shor's Stone (and, if this is any important, after running into a 3 imperial soldiers and a prisoner random encounter, who were all murdered) I got fed up and went to the kitchen for a bottle of water. Naturally, when I came back, he was out of sight already and I decided to fast travel to Whiterun. Surprise, when I get there, no Letrush! And it does seem the game got rid of him, I can't moveto his refID, moving him to me does nothing, and trying to enable him doesn't make him appear either. I'm on 1.3.10 still, so it's not a fix from the new patch. I guess I'll stay on this save and see if he appears at Whiterun later. --201.1.30.131 19:29, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
Bah, he appeared at the stables now. --201.1.30.131 19:40, 28 January 2012 (UTC)
While trying to find the Assassin of the Old, located in Hag's End, I encountered Louis Letrush while exploring the area in addition to the forsworn, witches, and that one teleporting hagraven. — Unsigned comment by 108.6.175.147 (talk) at 01:50 on 4 February 2012
After choosing the option which tells Letrush that you're going to kill him, he said something along the lines of 'take your best shot' and then ran off, the quest was still completed however, and I got to keep the horse. After this I fast traveled to Whiterun and Letrush appeared next to the horse, wondering if it's maybe related somehow, and he should actually be dead. 80.0.148.127 00:46, 9 March 2012 (UTC)
This happened to me after a dragon attack in riften. after killing the dragon i went to the barb and there he was. — Unsigned comment by 72.219.42.19 (talk) at 02:31 on 7 April 2012

() Well, there's seems to be an abundance of information here, but I'll add my own experiences all the same. The first Letrush for me appeared immediately after giving him the horse. (right outside Whiterun stables, half-buried) The second appeared the next time I went through that location, standing next to him. The third didn't appear til much later, I have no idea how long, but I managed to fully complete 3 of the major questlines in that timeframe. I have never seen any of the random encounters in which he is attacked, I just see the 3 of them standing by the stables, doing absolutely nothing. As of right now, thats all thats happened for me. Shadowrose6663 05:34, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

I have three copies of Letrush outside Whiterun Stables in one of my games. First, I had one halfway buried in the ground which I noticed not long after I gave the horse to Letrush. Some time later after progressing in the Thieves' Guild questline, another Letrush appeared next to the half-buried one. This persisted until I used the full Unrelenting Force shout to dislodge the buried one, at which point both clones came after me, forcing me to flee as they refused to die. About a day or so ago, I ran past the Whiterun stables after unloading some stuff with the Honningbrew fence, and I saw a third Letrush standing with the other two. In another game where I kept Frost, Letrush is standing outside Whiterun stables unduplicated. It's the oddest glitch I've ever seen in any game. SingingMom 05:01, 7 May 2012 (UTC)
I had two of them. One was the original, one was a clone. Slight comedy at times when talking to one caused the other to speak. After completing his quest and ignoring him for a while, I could kill both Louis. I haven't found out if this is a permenant fix or not. Upon looting the bodies, I noticed that they both carried 2 belted tunics. And all other loot was different. (Xbox 360 - Patch 5.1) I'll update as to whether or not this is a peremanent fix or not. - Si421 — Unsigned comment by 62.37.210.155 (talk) at 22:00 on 12 May 2012
In the Promises To Keep quest I met up with Mr. Letrush and informed him that I would keep Frost. He then ran for it which set in my natural chase instinct. He was darting through the wilderness and I was on Frost. I followed him until he was mauled and killed by two bears. That was nearly 40 hours of game play before I next encountered him. I had gone to Whiterun notably from Windhelm by carriage. I was there to defend Whiterun from the Stormcloak army. At the beginning of the battle of Whiterun, I sallied forth to meet the stormcloaks head on. However, the first figure I see running at me through the mist of battle, in my mind leading the stormcloak army, was Louis Letrush. He attacked him and I attacked him. I discovered that he could not be killed so I cast Storm Call to stay him while I fought the battle.
After the battle I was running out of Whiterun and he attacked again and chased me all the way to the Western watchtower. I incapacitated him there and ran for it. Again, some time later I approached Whiterun. He was at the stables. I prepared for the worst. I walked by and he didn't attack. I turned around and spoke to him. He said, "Please, don't hurt me again!"
Now, every time I pass he just says "Hmmmmm." I don't know what this means but he may be plotting something. I'm afraid that he will duplicate himself. I don't know how many it would take to bring me down. He is "Agent Letrush" as another gentleman put it. — Unsigned comment by 24.233.223.17 (talk) at 20:49 on 23 May 2012
Same as above (+1).(L44) Gave him horse, ratted him out to Maven, next time near stables 1 in ground, 2nd time 4, (no 30 day delay). (L56)Encountered in random encounter outside Rannveig's Fast, saved from orc, he attacked but unkillable - reloaded from save. Checked and still 4 outside stable - non-aggressive. Stage info: Getting staff for Arniel/Enthir active almost complete, College at Mzulft quest given not started, Joined no side yet, Main: Horn of Jurgen quest given but not started, Lots of quests started but not completed - waiting for various best outcome triggers. I think early in the game I used the Carriage 4 times but can't be sure of that. Hope that helps. Philbert 03:52, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Dont steal/mount the horse more than once

First time I stole the horse and returned it to Letrush he started attacking me. I had mounted/stolen the horse a total of 3 times, but not within sight of Letrush. Second time I only mounted it once, after having stolen the lineage papers, and this time I was able to complete the quest.

Probably, after you steal the horse once it will be owned by Letrush, and when you get on it again to return it, he is mad that you stole his horse. (His behavior is the same as Cicero's when you steal his horse, he too, cannot be killed, allthough Cicero will run and hide after you "kill" him, instead of chasing you.) — Unsigned comment by 84.48.61.137 (talk) at 16:26 on 21 December 2011

Verified letrush as being copied multiple times for certain reasons

Every time you see a copy of letrush appear outside of whiterun, its because the script that causes him and an orc to appear in your local proximity failed to run it's course. However, if letrush is successfully killed infront of you, all copies of him will perimately dissapear, his character is programed to either die infront of you, or be killed by you, but when skyrim places him near you, if you dont locate him, or he cannot catch up to you due to you FAST TRAVELING (USING CARRAIGES) His "clone" that is used to show him being slain by an orc is then sent to whiterun stables, and the reason for that is simply because it's logically the best place to put him, if you put letrush in riften, he'd have to chase you from riften (spawn from riften) and "catch up" with you from wherever you spawn, but if he's in the middle of the map it gives his code / script of him being killed infront of you a better chance of happening, I bet if any of you can verify his death, go check whiterun stables and see if he's there anymore after being slain by either you or the orc, because I as well have seen the orc chasing him down and he was screaming " HOW DID YOU FIND ME?!!", and the orc replied " MAVEN SENDS HER REGARDS " However, I reloaded a previously saved game because I killed someone I didnt want to kill, and so far it hasent happened again. — Unsigned comment by 24.63.171.231 (talk) at 06:46 on 2 February 2012

Possible fix for Letrush Clone Bug

During the Battle for Whiterun, if the four Letrush clones are still there, you can attack them and kill them. You can then loot the bodies. Don't know if the bodies disappear, but might work. This is if you don't want the clones standing there anymore.--151.199.61.29 18:04, 6 February 2012 (UTC)bepease2269

It is also possible to kill the clones of Louis Letrush after the random encounter where you find a Thug that attacks Louis Letrush. After this event triggers, the clones will no longer be "essential" and they can be killed like normal. This also appears to remove the further cloning of Louis Letrush. — Unsigned comment by 66.27.16.6 (talk) at 00:44 on 3 March 2012
Actually, if you kill the Letrush clones in Whiterun, they just keep coming. You have to use the console to get rid of them permanently. ThuumofReason 12:12, 2 April 2012 (UTC)
I've uploaded the new patch, so I don't know if that made a difference, but I saw the Black-Briar thug kill Louis, killed his "clones" as a werewolf (to avoid a bounty), and I haven't seen any new duplicates appear at the Whiterun Stables so far (even after traveling to other Holds and back to the Whiterun Stables). The dead bodies seem to be gone as well, after my werewolf massacre. I'm on the console, so I can't deal with the situation like people on the PC can. Lobsel Vith 18:00, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Cleared the glitch -- used dragon breath (flame) on the one buried in the ground. It dislodged him and he stood up and ran away. Beat up the one with the arrow over his head. Letrush sends a thug to punish player

I had no bugs with this little fellow, but after a lot of time playing i've encountered a thug in the wilderness who told me he is going to punish me for crossing Letrush(in other words). I found a good amount of gold on his corpse, steel armor, enchanted battleaxe and something enchanted i can't remember what. This isn't mentioned on the main page so someone have to add this. Louis Letrush has turned my game into Thunderdome!!!

Roughly 20 hours in I encountered this joker Louis at the bar in Riften. He went psycho, trying to kill me, and chased me into the thieves guild. He then proceeded to aggro the entire guild. When I ran outside the guild Riften guards got between me and my thieves guild comrades. What happened next is unthinkable. This has erupted into an infinite loop battle royale between the Riften guard (who spawn endlessly it seems) , the thieves guild (who can't die due to their status as essential NPC's), and in the middle of it all is Louis the lunatic Letrush. I can't even walk into Riften or talk to any essential NPC's because they are forever engaged in battle mode. This is just insane. Bethesda needs to fix this (I'm afraid of leaving because if he followed me he'd unite all of skyrim into WWIII)!

Note: I've never even encountered him once before I ran into him in Riften. — Unsigned comment by 98.68.167.7 (talk) at 21:15 on 6 June 2012

I encountered same bug on my new character and after trying to figure out how to solve it for over an hour (loading previous save, using console command "recycleactor") nothing seemed to work so i kinda gave up and decided to go on with different quests i had.One of them was joining the Dark Brotherhood(i had already killed the old lady but didn't rest to triger the abandoned shack quest).Weirdly enough after resting, waking up in abandoned shack, killing one of 3 npc's and getting an invitation to join the brotherhood i fast traveled back to Riften and Louis was normal, not attacking me.Don't know if it will work for everyone but if you're in a situation that resembels mine you could give it a go. — Unsigned comment by 46.246.185.234 (talk) at 20:16 on 12 August 2012

I believe I have killed Louis Letrush once and for all (possible bug fix)

  • PS3, latest patch.
  • When I did the quest I stole the horse (riding the horse twice in the process) and brought it to him and allowed him to escape on horseback.
  • I witnessed Louis being killed by a thug once in the wilderness. I think this is what makes him killable.

For a long time I had one Letrush sticking out of the ground in front of Whiterun. When a second Letrush appeared standing next to him, I decided to kill both Letrushes by sniping them off from the roof of the stable without witnesses. The bodies were removed and he has not appeared in my game since. 68.1.172.2 02:15, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

multi louis letrush outside whiterun stables after completing Dawnguard DLC

I've completed the quest that involves louis letrush a while ago and I've completed most of the quests in skyrim and had no problems with louis letrush untile after I downloaded and completed the new dawnguard DLC. About an hour after I had finnished the dawnguard DLC I was running to whiterun being cased by an acient dragon hoping that when I got there some guards would come out to help me fight the dragon. Well as u might have guess that wasn't the case when I arrived at whiterun instead of having soldiers running to help me I had 3 louis letrush standing by the stables waiting for me and they attacked. I thought maybe I had hit them by accident while fighting the dragon so I reloaded the save but again they imimdeatly attacked me they can not be killed and the guards attack them on site I'm on the 360 so I can't get rid of them like some one on the PC can. Also they attack me on site but after a hit or 2 they run away. I fell like maybe the DLC might of trigered this glitch because this has never hapend before. I hope this gets fixed soon. — Unsigned comment by 68.171.231.81 (talk) at 06:54 on July 20, 2012
