Bug

There is a bug with this quest, at least on the Xbox version, where as when you follow the priest into the chapel, he dissapears making it impossible to advance on with the quest. I'm not sure on how to properly add this to the bugs section, so I posted it here - Emoboy64 03:14, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

^There is a way to get to him even though you can't get through the wall. You need to grab a plate or bowl or bucket or something of that sort preferably go grab a few of these before entering then press it against the wall in the corner beside the wall you have to enter through not on it though try to kind of corner it in between the little wood sticking out and the wall you must go through, and use whirlwind sprint shout to quickly sprint into it. it will take a good amount of tries probably but you can run through the wall. You will have to do this on the door entering the library inside there aswell as the wall thats blocked by the blue glowing stuff. once you get through that wall you can complete the quest. this works guaranteed just gotta spend a little time at it but its better then going back hours or days in the game depending on your last save. if you need help glitching through walls look it up on youtube it will show you how. — Unsigned comment by 99.249.132.4 (talk) at 03:09 on 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Possible glitch - FIXED

I've been writing the walkthrough so far as much as I can, but am now stuck on the Dreamwalker part. I can't seem to find the Miasma, and the only logical place (the library) is barred by an invisible wall. Can anyone else solve this? Spikelovesmetal 15:14, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Did you get past the Dreamwalker section? I'm stuck on an invisible doorway; it looks like I need to pass in order to release the Miasma but I can't pass through it.... — Unsigned comment by 174.24.250.184 (talk) at 02:22 on November 14, 2011
^There is a chain to can activate to your left when you are stuck at this invisible doorway; it's difficult to see because of the fuzzy, dream effect. — Unsigned comment by 71.191.39.196 (talk) at 16:46 on December 6, 2011

Miasma

That's not Miasma. Its the Torpor. I'm talking about when you are in the Dream sequence. — Unsigned comment by 174.24.250.184 (talk) at 21:28 on November 14, 2011

Erandur not responding (glitch/bug?)

After the fight in the laboratory to find the Torpor, objective "Speak to Erandur" cannot be completed as I can't talk to him at all. Tried reloading a save/waiting and nothing changes. (Xbox 360) — Unsigned comment by 86.0.135.56 (talk) at 20:39 on November 16, 2011

This happened to me but I loaded and he spoke to me after the fight. IIRC I killed both people myself the second time and the first time he killed one of them. It could also be a bug associated with hitting him during the fight. (Xbox 360) 173.80.118.190 01:00, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Walk upstairs until you see the room below you. On the wall you will find the option to release the miasma. — Unsigned comment by 71.57.68.73 (talk) at 02:39 on November 24, 2011

Broken on console

Saw that there was an Xbox complaint, this quest is broken on PS3 as well. When I get to the tower, Erandur has moved to end of dungeon, so no way of getting through. No console commands either so...guess it's just unfinished. — Unsigned comment by 71.206.102.103 (talk) at 05:18 on November 17, 2011

It was on PC too. Still, I somehow managed to get it work, but not sure how. — Unsigned comment by 178.206.24.133 (talk) at 23:28 on 18 November 2011

Bugs... everywhere!

These bugs were all on the article - and they more or less covers all NPCs who will either lead or follow you - I see no need to keep them on the page at the moment, but will keep the bug template for later investigation:

  • A possible bug may occur shortly before entering Nightcaller Temple, where Erandur may disappear and not return. In this case either reloading to a point in Dawnstar (such as the Inn) or entering the Temple and going back outside again may work.
  • Erandur occasionally gets stuck on the stairs inside the tower; going behind him and giving him a 'push' will usually make him walk again, or failing that, wait an hour and try again
  • Erandur can also get stuck walking up the hill on rocks at the start of the quest, usually he does start walking the right way again.
  • Erandur can become stuck once you find the Torpor, such that he will not give you any dialogue option for continuing the quest.

--Krusty 23:08, 20 November 2011 (UTC)

EDIT: To continue the quest, you MUST DRINK THE TORPOR. You're welcome. — Unsigned comment by 70.36.55.26 (talk) at 00:04 on 30 November 2011
Helpful tip: Erandur got stuck on the stairs for me. Equipping a shield and using it while pushing him seems to help move him a little easier. 4meridia7 02:27, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
You can also use unrelenting force to knock him towards the door, if you have the full shout that is. — Unsigned comment by 85.194.242.161 (talk) at 10:28 on 12 February 2012
I got Erandur to respond again when he froze at the end by thumping him and then using Emporer's Voice on him.— Unsigned comment by 86.158.162.117 (talk) on 12 April 2012

Oblivion Walker Achievement

It says in the article that acquiring the Skull of Corruption from this quest is essential to get the Oblivion Walker achievement. This is not true, as there are 17 Daedric Artifacts in the game and the player must only obtain 15 to get the achievement. I verified this myself by obtaining both the Saviour's Hide and the Ring of Hircine from the Ill met by Moonlight quest as well as 13 other artifacts and unlocking Oblivion Walker (on Steam). It is true however that the player must get either the Skull OR the Masque of Clavicus Vile (I believe they are the only artifacts that can be missed even if you successfully complete their respective quests). — Unsigned comment by 79.20.177.22 (talk) at 16:55 on November 28, 2011

I cannot see where it says this so im assuming it has been removed already, however I would like to point out that tho there are infact 17 artifacts the skeleton key does not count for the achivement and getting both Saviour's Hide and the Ring of Hircine is a glitch which leaves only 15. Without using that glitch you need to get all 15 artifacts. Kimi the Elf 23:00, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

Glitch fix for PC

If Erandur vanishes upon entering the Night Caller Temple or becomes non responsive (i.e. you cannot talk to him), this is a quick work around:

Open command console and run these two commands:

prid 0024280 ↵

moveto player ↵

Approach to XBOX Erandur glitch

If Erandur glitches after you have entered Night Caller Temple, exit the temple and re-enter: Erandur will no longer be glitched. There is no need to return to past saves if he glitches AFTER he enters the temple.

If you are troubled by the entrance glitch (i.e. you follow Erandur into Night Caller Temple but you are trapped in the first chamber without him), this glitch requires loading an earlier saved game. — Unsigned comment by 71.191.39.196 (talk) at 16:46 on December 6, 2011

Getting the potion BEFORE Erandur

If you get the Torpor before finding the book, the quest stucks. When Erandur reaches the Laboratory, he does nothing. There's no dialogue available, even with the potion in your inventory. You can't neither drink it ("You can not eat quest items", says the game) or drop it ("Quest items cannot be removed from your inventory").

I tried the console. I rushed into the Laboraty before Erandur, and put a potion in the bookshelf. Didn't work. Might putting in Erandur's inventory would do it, but I don't know how to give a item to a NPC. Any clues? 187.126.102.146 12:49, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

I think I put the potion in Erandur's inventory via console. I'm not sure, however, 'cause you can't pickpocket Erandur.
Anyway, didn't work. 187.126.102.146 13:03, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
I managed to go over this: assuming you have the potion, go to console and type:
player.removeitem 0005f6df 1 and
player.additem 0005f6df 1.
this will replace your Vaermina's Torpor with a new one, but this time is not a mission object, so you can drink it and go on with the quest (Larry lurex 16:17, 4 February 2012 (UTC))

Erandur stuck at the Inn (Xbox)

Possible glitch and solution.

Spoke to Erandur on first arrival to Dawnstar, but didn't follow him. (Xbox360)

Later in the game, found him at the Windpeak Inn, at the bar. Wouldn't move from there, between the two stools, although he kept uttering "follow me, my son."

Finally able to dislodge him by summoning a Frost Atronach at his feet, which pushed him out away from the bar and started him walking. — Unsigned comment by 173.54.2.134 (talk) at 14:07 on December 13, 2011

Same here on PC.
-Stuck between the stool. Try to move him in a fight but he just wont move.
-Keep muttering about a tower inside the inn. — Unsigned comment by 175.145.48.205 (talk) at 23:44 on December 18, 2011
I am also encountering this problem on PC. After receiving the quest objective to follow Erandur, he just stands there in the inn and says "Follow me, my son". I've tried sprinting into him to get him moving, but to no avail. //Vinifera7 07:53, 1 January 2012 (UTC)
I was able to move him away from the counter and send him on his way by repeatedly sprinting into the space between him and the counter until I could fit between him and the counter, then nudging him away from the counter a little bit with additional sprinting. Xyzzy 17:05, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
I also had this glitch on the PC. I got him moving by using 'block' a few times with my bow drawn. This knocked him back away from the stools. I then put my bow away and he started walking. — Unsigned comment by 91.85.54.99 (talk) at 13:44 on 23 March 2012

() I fixed this for PC by conjuring a storm atronach at his feet. He then decided to move. Although, he wasn't stuck between the stools for me, just in open space at the inn. — Unsigned comment by 130.18.177.243 (talk) at 08:00 on 25 April 2012

Ruin within a ruin?

On your way to the temple Erandur makes reference to a "ruin inside a ruin"... Is this an inception Easter Egg (the quest is about dreams after all) or just coincidence? — Unsigned comment by 78.105.247.158 (talk) at 18:38 on December 15, 2011

Possibly, this is a quest about dreams afterall, and we end up going into his past life through a dream... 109.156.245.120 23:43, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Taking context into consideration, he says it's a temple ruin inside a ruined tower. --Mikeytalkemail 23:54, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Erandur is helplessly crawling around - SOLVED (a bit)

I'm the type of player that likes to raid everything, but Erandur (being a stupid weak old fool) decided to run through all the rooms without my help. I found a trail of dead followers and orcs, leading to him and now he's just crawling around extremely slowly, because he would be dead if he wasn't an invincible quest NPC. Now he can't get up the stairs to break the barrier around the skull, he's stuck at the bottom and the staircase is too steep. Healing hands spell doesn't work, so he's stuck and I can't finish the quest.

Also, the "ruin within a ruin" isn't a reference to Inceptions "dream within a dream". It's a ruin within a ruin, that's it. Dreams and ruins aren't the same thing, just because the sentence has the same structure as another sentence, doesn't mean one is a reference to the other. You're clutching at straws, get over it. Sometimes one thing is inside another thing, so what? — Unsigned comment by Astrosteve (talkcontribs) at 16:53 on December 22, 2011

If you give him long enough, he will appear at the top of the stairs because the game finaly realises there's no other way. But then Vaermina tells you to kill him, so he becomes mortal and dies instantly. Now you can't kill him and you can't activate the skull pedestal. Attacking his corpse doesn't help. Removing everything from his corpse doesn't help. He's too powerful to be brought back to life, even by Revenant. Your companion also treats him as dead, so won't attack him. Waiting 24 hours does nothing. No shouts work. So now the quest won't finish until I murder someone who is already dead. — Unsigned comment by Astrosteve (talkcontribs) at 17:19 on December 22, 2011

xBox 360 Miasma demystified... at least for me

I think the secret to getting the whole thing to work is to do the following upon entering Nightcaller Temple

1st room - To the left is a table with Shrine of Mara. Activate it to receive blessing.

Follow Erandur - Find the book and Torpur potion.

When at blocked door drink potion

You appear in the skull room make your way back to blocked door

Pull chain directly to left of blocked doorway.

Take Common Stone and talk to Erandur

You have to travel back to skull room and make a choice

A - Murder Erandur to get the scepter B - Let him live and he will become your companion. — Unsigned comment by Rancorpit1 (talkcontribs) at 20:37 on December 22, 2011

Xbox 360 glitch

The guy dissapears when i go into the temple, i dont have any previous saves to revert to, i have tried the leave temple and go back in, doesnt work, also restarted the console dodnt work, i waited 72 hours and he wasnt there, no solution for me yet.... real annoying — Unsigned comment by 81.152.93.166 (talk) at 01:28 on December 28, 2011

I spared Erandur and took him as a companion. Apparently he is a very buggy character no matter where he is as he got stuck in drawn-weapon mode when killing mud crabs. Couldn't talk to him or push him out of his rut. Shouted him into a small body of water and wound up killing him anyway... (12.30.106.82 11:03, 28 February 2012 (UTC))

Waited too long?

Existing text: (if you waited too long before killing Erandur, you will lose both the Skull and the follower. The quest will end without giving you any reward; saying something like such is the result of indecision)

How can one wait too long? The objective is to either 1) kill Erandur, or 2) wait for him to finish the steps to destroy the Skull, after which he can be a potential follower. There's no way to lose both unless one chooses 2), gets him as a potential follower, then deliberately kills him. I tried but I didn't get the indecision message.

So I'll be removing that paragraph soon unless there's new evidence. 71.132.201.220 04:06, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Hardly surprising you missed it: there IS such a message, but it's in the (completed) journal, not onscreen; and you have to choose #2 and then kill him before talking to him. Aliana 19:32, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Bug

Ok, i have the same bug for the Ps3. What i did was hit him until he was in the room with the barrels and keep tying to talk to him he started working again ( this is the path next to the room under the platform). — Unsigned comment by 174.110.216.155 (talk) at 07:33 on December 30, 2011

It seems no one else has encountered this glitch

Everything is all fine and dandy going through all the rooms, but then when I walk about 10 steps through the door into the center of the temple with the skull of corruption, two of the vaermina devotees run in, and just stand there looking around even though I'm standing right there. The screen says that I completed "following erandur through the temple" and then all that's left to do is get to the skull and either kill Erandur, or let him finish the steps of destroying it and whatnot.. But then I can't seem to move, the only thing I can do is pause, rotate the camera view and change perspective. Even though it says I followed him properly, if I watch the upper levels of the temple I eventually see him running around. I waited for an extremely long time thinking I could continue if he came down, but he never did. — Unsigned comment by 207.161.51.228 (talk) at 19:06 on January 1, 2012

Erandur MIA after quest completion

I completed quest and did not kill Erandur. He offered to come with me (become a follower) but I turned him down for the moment. He said he would be there at the temple if I needed him. Coming back to the temple, it is completely empty with no Erandur to be found. — Unsigned comment by 64.30.210.207 (talk) at 06:24 on January 7, 2012

Solution to Erandur not responding at the very end of the quest.

I walked out of the tower and came back in, and when I did he was responsive again. — Unsigned comment by 199.21.164.11 (talk) at 11:52 on January 7, 2012

Yet Another Bug

I've run into a bug that seems to be undocumented, so I'll post about it here. Everything in this quest was going fine, but after I drank the Torpor and was moving through the temple to activate the Miasma (during the Dreamstride), I suddenly ran into an invisible wall. This "wall" appears right before that section of the circular entry hall with the door leading to the library. Nothing I do works, with my only recourse being to reload an earlier save. None of the saves/autosaves I've made within Nightcaller Temple have helped me resolve this issue, so I'll try reloading one I made before entering and try that. - Lazy Dreamer 22:25, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Erandur stuck in combat mode on way to Library

I'm on the PC. Erandur goes down the stairs and finds the way to the skull blocked by a door. We kill 2 orcs first. He then asks me to follow to the library. Half way up the stairs to the library he just stops. He has his hands out, so he's in combat mode. I can talk to him, but he never advances. I've tried to push him, but he doesn't move enough. I've reloaded from the beginning of the tower many times, and he stops on the stairs in the same place every time. I've tried using Calm on him, but it says he is too powerful. — Unsigned comment by 98.169.202.83 (talk) at 05:01 on 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Resolved - I tried teleporting Erandur to the Library door using console, but this did nothing. I also tried to reset the plot stage to follow to library using setstage command, but this didn't work. However, I then used staggering double-cast destruction spells to stagger him slowly up the steps. Once he reached the top of the steps, he suddenly continued to the door. I had to take his health to 1/2 before I got him to the top. So you just need to get him to walk to the top under his own power (staggering) to get him to resume.— Unsigned comment by 98.169.202.83 (talk) at 05:40 on 2 February 2012 (UTC)

Having the same issue here. Only started since the last official patch. (Not using the beta 1.4) 24.156.216.144 11:46, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
Alternate resolution - If you use console commands to unlock the door, Erandur will continue on normally. 24.156.216.144 11:56, 4 February 2012 (UTC)
This occurs also on Xbox, tried exiting the temple, saving and loading. Didn't help. Ended up shouting him up the stairs and against the locked door to the library. wouldn't go to library

I had the problem where he went into the temple but wouldn't move on to the library. I went outside and told my follower to wait (not sure if that was necessary). Erandur won't talk

Ok I'm at the Dreamstride section. You find the book. You are supposed to talk to Erandur. But the option doesn't happen. Its like he doesn't exist. I just get a "What can I do for you my son?" without the option to talk to him. And I can't force it to go forward because he won't move. Its driving me nuts. 173.183.165.30 21:19, 9 February 2012 (UTC)

I have more or less the same problem, I found the book but nothing happens I can't place it in my inventory and i can only read it. Whenever i talk to that douch Erandur he just calls me his son and says i should check the balcony. Maybe I'm being stupid but this is really pissing me off — Unsigned comment by 86.27.127.70 (talk) at 13:37 on 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Solution to 'Stuck on Stairs glitch (PC)

I too had the problem where Erandur would get stuck in combat mode on the way back upstairs to the library. I managed to get him to open the door without using any console commands.

1) I FUS-RO-DA'd him up the stairs until he landed in front of the door to the library.

2) I then unequipped my weapon and started hitting him. After a few hits he aggro'd, causing him to open the door but start to attack me.

3) I then ran to the entrance and exited to the main map. I waited 24 hours and re-entered.

4) He was standing at the main entrance but no longer attacked me. He then walked through to the library no problem. — Unsigned comment by 109.224.137.175 (talk) at 13:01 on 19 February 2012

Alternate solution to move Erandur off stairs

I managed to get him to move by using the whirlwind shout power on him pushing both myself and him up the stairs. I had to do it about 3-4 times before he resumed on his way to the library. — Unsigned comment by 71.196.150.62 (talk) at 22:38 on 21 February 2012 (UTC)

I Unrelenting Forced him up the stairs and right against the door, but he wouldn't unlock it, even when I attacked him. I did a Whirlwind Sprint into the door and it opened. When I entered the room, he started following me and everything went back to normal. --67.176.88.83 03:54, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Alternate way to get Erandur up the stairs.

If you get passed the door he is stopping at the stairs youcan hit him up with UNRELENTING FORCE (with all 3 words). If you have aa previous save reload it and hit him with it right before he stops. The glitch should stop completely after this. — Unsigned comment by 184.76.240.19 (talk) at 22:45 on 25 February 2012

Invincible Orc - Bug

On PS3, one of the last few Orc Invanders, right before reaching the Skull/fighting Veren and Thorek, is invincible. The icon shows him as being hostile, but he just moves around and doesn't take any damage. Not sure what might have triggered this.

FIX: I haven't tried exiting the Temple and re-entering, but hitting Erandur once to make him attack the player, and then sheathing, makes him stop and this immediately actives the dialogue required to proceed with the quest. The Orc remains invincible. --109.175.185.11 07:01, 2 March 2012 (UTC)

Broken on XBox360: Erandur will not travel to Library

I noticed several bugs, and fixes, related to this quest (specifically to Erandur), and I have to say this quest is completely broken on the XBox360. I tried several fixes available, to no avail:

Loading a previous save
Talking to Erandur
Hitting Erandur
Shouting at Erandur with Unrelenting Force (full blast, and Fus only)
Exiting and Re-entering the temple

At best, I could get him halfway up the spiral stairs, to where he will stop, turn around, and do nothing. I decided to simply leave the temple, and forget the quest. 184.61.128.176 21:50, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Simple fix: Fus Ro Da him to the top of the stairs. He'll move as normal once there. To save time waiting on a Shout cool down, Fus Ro Da, wait one hour, repeat until he's there. Literally just did this. — Unsigned comment by 76.125.250.14 (talk) at 08:08 on 10 March 2012
I tried that, even got him right next to the door, but he still would not do anything. Even shouted him to the other side once, and reloaded because he wouldn't do anything. 184.61.128.176 16:56, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Tried all of these and nothing would work. I'm on the Xbox. When he gets stuck at the top of the stairs I went and stood facing him on the step beneath him. If you're right up on him for long enough without moving he will say "What the??" and take a few steps back from you. Keep doing it til he gets to the top of the stairs and he walks to the door and you can finish. Cannot exit to chamber in the temple

After both, killing or not killing, Erandur I am unable to exit anywhere or pull the chain again. Any ideas?

Why do you need to pull the chain? You should just be able to walk back up the stairs to the exit. — Kimi the Elf (talk | contribs) 10:07, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Floating Corpses

I don't know if this is worth mentioning or not, but I noticed that after coming out of the Dreamstride, all the orcs and devotees I had killed prior were now now naked, and many of them were also floating just above the ground and moving back and forth very slightly. I tried using Unrelenting force on the floating ones, but they wouldn't move.--Kolensk 16:59, 27 May 2012 (UTC)
