On the Structural Division of the In'eslaen Order of Exorcists
Originally a pamphlet handed out to recruits on the seventh day of Heart’s Fire, 4E 163

Written by SilenceOfAutumn

Greetings, Recruit, and welcome to the Eshkari Nifthinfæl (lit. Society of Spirit-Deniers), the In’eslaen Order of Exorcists, colloquially known as the Witch Hunters, or simply the Exorcist’s Order. Before you begin your training in our noble practices, some basic information on our Order must be explained. To some, this may already be familiar but to others, especially those born in the outer isles, non-echmeri citizens, and foreigners from all other regions where our influence and presence is understandably diminished, this may be entirely new information.

Part One: Structural Organisation

At any one time, our Order employs between three and four thousand members across the Isles. As centralised organisation of this many members would be exceptionally difficult, recruits are entered into one of the five divisions, based on their skills, training and aptitude, as well as other factors, such as background, with each Division being responsible for a different aspect of the duties of our Order.

Each Division is lead by a High Inquisitor and three Lord Inquisitors who manage the Division as a whole, settle internal disputes, organise overall Division objectives and communicate with other Divisions. Below them are ranked the Chief Inquisitors, who control the actions of their division members in a specific region. Finally, the Inquisitors working under the Chiefs will lead a team of ten members comprised of themselves and nine other Hunters

Part Two: Division Responsibilities

  • Division One: The Salt of the Seas and Stones - The backbone of the Order, the First Division was the initial group of Hunters from which the modern Order expanded. In keeping with their long history and tradition, the First Division are the Exorcists from whom we take our name, being responsible for the containment, destruction and banishment of spirits, as well as the punishment of those that deliberately summon them. The High Inquisitor of the First Division is currently Dethri Alafolx. Within the First Division, there are two subdivisions; The Barrier Corps, whose responsibilities are to restrain and suppress spirits through the use of magical restraints and barriers; and the Unwinders, Exorcists specially trained to dissolve possessions and banish rogue spirits by unravelling their bonds with the physical world.
  • Division Two: The Law of the Land - The judicial branch of the Order, the Second Division are the lawmakers and judges of the Witch Hunters. The Lawmasters of the Second Division determine the Thirteen Tenets, and issue the permits required to those who wish to practice magic in Yneslea. They are also responsible for the review and sentencing of those that break the laws of magic, acting as the judges of the Iron Court. The High Inquisitor of the Second Division is currently Felis Suthrineda. The Second Division has four main subdivions; the Lawcrafters, who design the laws enforced by the other divisions; the Knights of the Judiciary, lawyers who defend and assess the magic users brought before the Iron Court; the Wordsmiths, the regulatory body that conducts routine inspections of magical research facilities and issues the permits required for the use of magic in Yneslea; and the Inverse Archivists, who keep court records and paperwork secure.
  • Division Three: The Eyes of the Heart - The Third Division is the intelligence branch of the Order, its Witch Hunters responsible for the tracking and research on foreign and rogue mages who may break our laws. They also investigate cases of improperly used magic, and act as the prosecution in the Iron Court. The majority of Order Temples across the Isles are outposts for the Third Division. The current High Inquisitor for the Third Division is Yuriki Shetura. Although there are many subdivisions within the Third, the primary three that recruits will become acquainted with are: the Shadestriders, who specialise in the restraint and capture of rogue mages and sorcerers through the use of specialised forms of magic; Windwalkers, who are responsible for the tracking and isolation of criminal magic users through the use of specially trained animals; and Vaultwardens, who guard areas of notable magical and technological significance, particularly Dwemer and Kítapoe ruins.
  • Division Four: The Souls of the Blind - The spiritual branch of the Order, the Sages of the Fourth Division are responsible for the meditative and spiritual practices of the Order. Their duties involve spiritual guidance, healing and the training of new recruits to the Order. This Division is also responsible for the acquisition of supplies such as the various Salts which are then distributed to the other Divisions. The High Inquisitor of the Fourth Division is currently Asker Norro. The largest division by far (as all currently in-training Exorcists are counted among their number), the Fourth Division has three subdivisions: the Teaching Corps, perhaps the most important section of our forces, that administers and staffs the Academy of Muskitos’arcere on Pas’avaga, the training ground for all recruits to the Order; the Distribution Corps, that distributes and acquires resources for the various members of the Order; and the Medics, who manage and perform both physical and spiritual healing for those among our order who require it.
  • Division Five: The Mind of the Forgotten - Often known as the “lost division”, the Fifth Division is the Research and Development branch of the Order, responsible for the manufacture of our tools, equipment and task-specific objects. The Fifth Division also serves as archivists and historians of the Order. Typically, this Division is the smallest of the Order, consisting of only around one hundred and thirty Thoughtweavers at the present time. The current High Inquisitor of this Division is Meyu Uratrani. Due to its small size, the Fifth Division does not have rigid subdivisions, although its members may choose to specialize in a particular area of research or manufacture.

Part Three: Standard Equipment

Upon graduation from the training portion of your service, you will each be outfitted with a standard Order uniform, consisting of a coat, mantle, boots and trousers, all made from leather, and a shirt of silk. Each item of clothing is embroidered with the symbol of the Division you are assigned to, as well as the Order as a whole. While some small customisations to the uniform are allowed - jewellery, pouches and scarves, for instance - the emblems must not be obscured at any time. The labelling of your uniform with your name is mandatory, and must be done at your own expense. In addition, you will also be supplied with the standard Order toolkit, consisting of a Solarite-embedded silver and iron chain, supplies of the forty primary salts, a dozen candles and a copy of the Exorcist’s Manual. Should you run out, you may resupply at your local Division Branch, but should it be found that you have lost or damaged any of your equipment requiring its replacement, a fine may be incurred. A personal Solarite hammer is also granted to every member of the Order, but cannot be replaced under any circumstances should it be lost or destroyed, due to the relatively rare and valuable nature of the material.

Additionally, you will be given equipment specific to your Division. Members of the First Division are given access to a wider range of anti-spirit salts, Second Division members with specialised Codexes of the laws and regulations of the Isles, Third Division members with anti-magic manacles and Sealing supplies, Fourth Division members with first aid kits and ceremonial tools, and Fifth Division members with specialised lab coats and safety equipment.
