"Slip my body into Mother Sea and sing me into the world beyond, as is my right as a Sea Elf. Otherwise I will haunt you to the end of your days.

Mother Sea,[2] also called Mother of Seas,[3] is an obscure entity sworn to by the Maormer.[4][UOL 1] She is related to Maormer beliefs about the afterlife. According to the tradition, Sea Elves must be returned to the Mother Sea and guided to the next world through song. It is said that failing to honor this rite can cause the restless dead to linger and haunt the living.[1] To some Maormer, Mother Sea is a constant presence, "whether they sink or swim". This belief gave some Maormer the courage to face sea storms without fear.[4]
