Raven Direnni was an Altmer noblewoman from the early First Era. She is often mentioned alongside her better-known cousins, Aiden and Ryain Direnni, all of whom played a major role in the historical Battle of Glenumbra Moors, but beyond that, she is sometimes accredited as the creator of enchanting, a magical discipline in which you use a soul gem to embed magical powers into an inanimate object.[1]

Raven Direnni's Inflammable Rug

Raven Direnni was born into the noble clan of Altmer, the Direnni of Balfiera. According to some sources, Raven Direnni was credited with creating enchanting before the Psijic Order,[1] but others such as Once, and the existence of prominent enchanters from Merethic Era prove otherwise.[2][3]

According to Once, before Raven Direnni's discoveries, the art of enchantment was unique and that a successful attempt was a one-in-twenty chance. Raven Direnni eventually created the Rules of Eldritch Binding, which made the process much more successful.[2] One of the first magic items she supposedly created was an inflammable rug.[4]

When the Direnni Hegemony went to war with the Alessian Order in the early First Era, Raven Direnni lived in Castle Daggerfall as one of its earliest occupants.[5] To prepare for the war, Raven Direnni outlined the design of armor later classified as Ancestral High Elf style.[6] The war came to a climax at the Glenumbra Moors, where the Direnni defeated the Alessians led by Faolchu.[7] Raven, with her cousins, Aiden, and Ryain were able to defeat the Alessians and force them out of High Rock.[1][2]

Years after her time, Raven Direnni's inflammable rug remained in Castle Daggerfall for many years until it was stolen by the Thieves Guild of Abah's Landing in 2E 582. It was then placed in a collection of similarly rare and valuable items.[8]
