Lord Drad is a Dark Elf noble who lives with his wife on the estate he owns north of Anvil. It seems that Lord Drad is not opposed to using slave labor (namely ogre slave labor) to line his pockets, especially in Bleak Mine, which he also owns. The Daedric Prince Malacath, however, does not look kindly upon this particular endeavor and will ask you to free the ogres during the related quest.
While the ogre slaves work under the watchful eyes of his employees, Lord Drad lives a relaxing upper-class lifestyle and never even leaves the house; after waking up at 8am he picks a random book from the collection near the bed, then studies it until his lunch at noon. The rest of the day, until his bedtime at 10pm, is spent wandering the ground floor, with a two-hour break for dinner at 6pm.
He wears a set of clothing worthy of being a Lord. He wears a blue velvet outfit with a piece of jewelry, a copper ruby ring, and a pair of blue suede shoes. He carries a spare of red velvet garment, a hoe, and a large amount of gold. If you have freed all the ogres his upper class clothing will be replaced by a set of lower class clothing: a sack cloth shirt, sack cloth pants, and a pair of sack cloth sandals.
DialogueEdit
Drad is polite and welcoming when greeting you:
- "I welcome you to my humble home, stranger. What brings you to this place?"
- Lord Drad
- "I am Lord Drad."
- Lord Drad Estates
- "The land is good, the farm productive. The mine's under construction, but once it's working, it will make my fortune."

MalacathEdit
Drad's exploitative practices have not gone unnoticed by Malacath, who will ask you to free them with:
- "Lord Drad took my ogres. Poxy white-skin says he owns them. Lying maggot! They're MY ogres! So this Lord Drad, he puts my little brothers in chains, working in the mines, and it makes me mad. So. You get over to Lord Drad's estate. Get my ogres loose, and get them out."
Shobob gro-Rugdush tends to agree with his master that Drad is nasty piece of work:
- "Drad's a fancy pants who lives in a pretty house with a pretty wife because he screws over folks like you and me. He makes us puke."
On the other hand, his wife paints a rather different picture:
- "He is my husband, a kind and gentle man. He has given me everything I might ever desire."
She also provides some more background on the estate:
- "Drad purchased the land and title from Council. It cost him a fortune, and he's determined to make it pay."
Speaking to Drad himself will allow you to probe into his affairs:
- Lord Drad Estates
- "The land is good, the farm productive. But it's mining the wealth from beneath the land that will make my fortune."
- Ogre Slaves
- "Can you think of a better use for the mindless beasts? Under my eye, they do some good in this world."
- I admire your efforts.
- "I am quite pleased with the ogre slaves in my Bleak Mine. No issues of slavery with brute beasts. Profitable. And legal."
- Bleak Mine
- "The source of my income, of course. I bought it for a song from a foolish Orc. My ogres mine the gold, and I reap the reward."
- No creature should be a slave.
- "I don't believe I asked for your opinion on this matter. I am done speaking with you. Please leave my estate."
Taking the abolitionist stance will see him angrily reject any further conversation:
- "I have no more to say to you. Leave."
Should you choose to free the ogres, Lord Drad and his wife will be punished severely by the now-freed ogres and will be forced to work the land outside the house 24 hours a day, without ever eating or sleeping. If spoken to, Lady Drad will bemoan their fall from grace:
- "The poor man's terrified."
- "Now my poor husband is the slave, and the ogres are his masters. They haven't harmed us, but he's never worked so hard in his life."
If you speak to him he will wail:
- "Don't let the ogres get me!"
- "Please! I've got to get to work. If I don't... who knows what those ogres will do to me!"
- "Malacath, have mercy!"
If you then murder the ogres, he will still cry:
- "Please! I've got to get to work! All we have left is the farm!".
Once you return to the shrine, Malacath will be delighted:
- "Good job! No one owns ogres but ME! And I fixed that maggot! The ogres own Drad! Make Drad eat dirt! Bwah-hah-hah!"
BugsEdit
- Even after completion of his related quest, Lord Drad will remain permanently essential.
- The Unofficial Oblivion Patch, version 3.5.4, fixes this bug.
