Quest-Related EventsEdit
Shornhelm DividedEdit
Enter the Shornhelm Chapel and you'll find the Baron, Countess Eselde Tamrith, and Count Verandis Ravenwatch in a heated discussion:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "You sent the Guard west? To chase a rumor? We need those troops to protect Shornhelm!"
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "Only some of them, Baron. My father would have done the same. Captain Janeve will discover the truth and report back."
- Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "Countess, Baron, please. We must remain focused. As long as Montclair controls the upper city, the whole region remains at risk."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "How can we trust you, Count Ravenwatch? Your friendship with Montclair is well known. What did you offer those captains to betray us?"
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "I care for the Count even less than you, Baron, but he hasn't done anything to warrant such accusations—yet."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "We must end this debate and take action! Make an example of the two traitors and retake the upper city! How can the two of you not see that?"
- Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "I do not disagree, Baron, but we need to proceed with caution. There is more to this situation than meets the eye."
- Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "I know I make you both nervous. Perhaps we should continue this after our blood has cooled."
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "Mind your tempers, gentlemen. We have a visitor. Come forward, friend, and state your business."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Bah! You both try my patience. I can almost understand what drove Montclair to abandon our triumvirate."
If you speak to him before speaking to the Countess, he'll only say:
- "The Countess will speak to you. I must consider how best to deal with the traitorous Baron Montclair."
Once you have directions from Eselde, you can get more information from Dorell:
- "Find those traitors and make them pay! Let's show everyone what it means to betray the city of Shornhelm!"
- The Countess said you could tell me more about this situation.
- "Situation? What's to tell? Baron Montclair betrayed all of Shornhelm and has taken over half the city!
People have been killed or injured, property destroyed. And now Montclair has demanded that we surrender and crown him king of Rivenspire!" - Why is Montclair doing this?
- "Now you sound like the Countess! Who cares why he wants to be king? The only thing that matters is that we stop him before he takes over all of Shornhelm!
The man is a cad and a coward. I will never bend my knee to him. Never!"
- "Now you sound like the Countess! Who cares why he wants to be king? The only thing that matters is that we stop him before he takes over all of Shornhelm!
- What can you tell me about Juberic Gane and Orlozag gra-Yarzol?
- "I don't know what Montclair promised them, but we can't let such disloyalty go unpunished. We must show resolve in this matter. We must deal harshly with these traitors.
They'll be in the upper city. Probably in the barracks or Montclair Manor."
- "I don't know what Montclair promised them, but we can't let such disloyalty go unpunished. We must show resolve in this matter. We must deal harshly with these traitors.
- Do you and Countess Tamrith argue often?
- "She's young and inexperienced. She hesitates. Turns to prayer instead of her own good sense.
A ruler has to think and act, not pray to bloody Arkay for every little thing. If we hesitate in this, we'll surely lose everything we hold dear."
- "She's young and inexperienced. She hesitates. Turns to prayer instead of her own good sense.
After returning from the upper city, he'll ask:
- "What news do you bring from the upper city? Have the traitors been dealt with?"
- The traitors have been dealt with. But Montclair is gone. He left General Reezal-Jul in charge.
- "Damn! Montclair's Argonian is as crazy as an outhouse skeever!
His soldiers kidnapped a few nobles, grabbed them in broad daylight. Probably hopes to use them as insurance against us. But he must realize that I never negotiate with terrorists." - I found a letter. Reezal-Jul plans to bring reinforcements in through the Fevered Mews.
- "Then we have to act fast. Go to the Mews and free Lady Aurine Tamrith, Nilthin al-Bergama, and Sir Estienn Guillon. If you can take out Reezal-Jul along the way, all the better.
In the meantime, we'll mobilize the Shornhelm Guard and retake the upper city." - I'll head to the Fevered Mews and free the hostages.
After speaking to the Baron, Eselde will speak up with indignation:
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "This Reezal-Jul seized nobles! Such brazen acts must not be tolerated, Baron!"
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Indeed. It is time to act, Countess. No more talk. No more debate."
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "How can we walk in the Light if we leave innocent townsfolk to languish … wait, are you agreeing with me?"
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Don't look so shocked, Eselde. It was bound to happen eventually. Our friend will go to the Mews to free the hostages and stop the reinforcements while we assault the upper city. A two-pronged approach."
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "Well, all right then. Baron, if you would. Give the command and rally the Shornhelm Guard."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "It will be my pleasure! It's time to show those Montclair cowards what it means to betray the people of Rivenspire."
Baron Alard Dorell leaves the chapel without further dialogue.
Free the hostages and the upper city will be liberated. Enter Shornhelm Castle and you'll find the baron among the audience for High King Emeric. You can speak with him here.
- "We dislodged House Montclair from its nest. The upper city is ours and Shornhelm is free."
If you spoke to High King Emeric but haven't turned in the quest, he will say:
- "Shornhelm is no longer a city divided. I'm glad we were able to accomplish that before the High King arrived.
Anyway, accept my thanks for the help you provided. I tend to forget to perform such niceties, so you may not hear that from me again."
After you completed the quest, he will say:
- "The Countess is young and unproven. Yes, she was invaluable in our victory over Montclair's forces, but is she really ready to govern? She lacks the experience and boldness of her father."
Dream-Walk Into DarknessEdit
After you speak to the king, he'll say:
- "Now that Shornhelm is secure, we can turn our attention to the reports coming in from the rest of Rivenspire. Something definitely unusual is going on out there."
- Reezal-Jul escaped before I could close the portal.
- "Damn. We have to find him. As long as he's at large, this region of Rivenspire is in terrible danger.
Now, if I could just get the Countess to abdicate her authority to me, we'd put an end to this constant bickering and really get things done." - What's your next step?
- "Take counsel with the High King, of course. We've been hearing reports of an unusual number of bloodfiends popping up throughout the countryside. That's just one more problem to add to our growing list of concerns."
- Are you staying in Shornhelm?
- "I'd prefer to be out in the field, but I expect the High King will send me where he will.
At least my son, Ellic, can manage House Dorell holdings while I deal with the broader concerns of Rivenspire."
- "I'd prefer to be out in the field, but I expect the High King will send me where he will.
Northpoint in PerilEdit
North of Fell's Run near the Boralis Wayshrine, you'll encounter the noble with a number of Shornhelm Soldiers looking north to the city of Northpoint and the surrounding contryside:
If you start the quest through the Baron, he will be ordering a Shornhelm soldier to tell the rest of his forces to stand down for the time being:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Hold the troops here until I give the signal. I don't want to risk loyal soldiers or city assets prematurely."
- Shornhelm Soldier: "As you command, my lord."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "What are you doing in my city, Lleraya?"
Speaking to him to start the quest:
- "Ah, finally, reinforcements! Have you heard? Montclair has sealed the gates and taken control of Northpoint. He's locked me out of my own city!
If you're here to help, I won't be offended in the least." - Northpoint's fallen?
- "I'm not sure I'd put it that way, but yes. Montclair forces have locked the gates and are razing the farms outside.
I sent a small team to find a way inside. We need to know what's going on in there before I order a full-scale attack." - Who did you send on this mission?
- "Captain Skordo leads the mission. I trust Skordo implicitly, but with your help our chances of success increase a thousandfold.
Head into the farmlands surrounding Northpoint and find Skordo and his team." - I'll find Skordo.
- "Remember, I'd like to save Northpoint while causing as little death and destruction as possible—except for the Montclairs. Kill as many of them as you like.
Just remind Skordo that this is our city we'll be assailing, not some bandit stronghold."
You can ask him further questions:
- Can I ask a few questions before I head out? (Leads to same questions being asked when you start the quest through Verandis)
Otherwise, if you start the quest through Verandis or Mollier Guillon:
- "Nice of you to finally join us. Those damn Montclairs have locked me out of my own city!
If any of my people have been hurt, I'll kill Montclair and his daughter with my bare hands." - What can I do to help?
- "You know how to get things done. Join up with Skordo and help him find a way into the city. I'll keep the troops on alert and ready to move on your signal."
- Why would they take over Northpoint?
- "Northpoint is an important trading center, with many House Dorell holdings. Whoever controls the city controls the northern region of Rivenspire. If I were Oblivion-bent on conquering the area, it's certainly what I would do."
- Can we expect any help inside the city?
- "My son, Ellic, was in charge while I was at Shornhelm. If he's still alive, he must be somewhere inside the city.
Beyond that, the entire populace is loyal to House Dorell, but I have no idea what kind of forces Montclair set loose within my city."
- Do you know who's commanding Montclair's forces?
- "Reports indicate that Baron Montclair hasn't been seen in weeks, though this mess has his fingerprints all over it. His daughter Lleraya, on the other hand, isn't afraid to show her face. We're assuming she's in command here."
- What can you tell me about Lleraya?
- "Prior to her mother's illness, she was a charming young woman. A real magic-using prodigy.
Now it's like she's been replaced by a dark seducer. Men and women will do anything to please her. And she's shown a remarkable affection for extreme cruelty."
- Where should I look for Skordo?
- "I sent Skordo and a small group to establish a secure base among the farmhouses outside the city.
He's supposed to find a way into Northpoint and then send us a signal. Since that hasn't happened yet, I assume he's still working on it." - Who did Skordo take with him?
- "Countess Tamrith went with him. Against my better judgment, I might add. And that fancy knight, Darien, decided to tag along. He's gotten rather friendly with Skordo since he arrived.
I hope they can slip inside or this is going to be a long siege."
- "I sent Skordo and a small group to establish a secure base among the farmhouses outside the city.
Speaking to him again:
- "Remember, I'd like to save Northpoint while causing as little death and destruction as possible—except for the Montclairs. Kill as many of them as you like.
Just remind Skordo that this is our city we'll be assailing, not some bandit stronghold." - Can I ask a few questions before I head out?
- "Of course! I always have time for a soldier who knows how to get things done.
What do you want to know?" (Returns to the previous 3 questions)
After getting the key from Captain Lagra, Gwendis will lead you to the group where Dorell will address you:
- Gwendis: "Tell us you've found something, hero. We could use some good news."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "I'm not interested in news. Just tell me you found a way to get us into those tunnels."
Speaking to him before Gwendis:
- "The army waits for my signal, out beyond the farms. I want to keep the damage to Northpoint to a minimum. Marching soldiers have a habit of destroying persons and property, even when they're trying to be careful."
The Liberation of NorthpointEdit
If you speak to the baron before speak to Skordo, he'll direct you to him:
- "Talk to Skordo. He has a plan. It's a bit crude, but it just might work.
At least, it has the advantage of being remarkably simple and easy to remember. I appreciate that in a plan."
You'll next meet up with Dorell inside his son's office:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Ellic, where can you be?"
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Oh, there you are. Have you found anything yet?"
Speaking to him:
- "I thought my son might be hiding here, in his office. But all I found was his journal. You might as well have a look."
- Just tell me what it says.
- "Ellic and I haven't always seen eye to eye, and he's made no effort to hide his feelings about me in his journal. He does mention the arrival of Lady Lleraya, though.
I'll tell you more when we gather with the others. No reason to repeat myself." - We're using Baron Chirane's manor as a base. Skordo is there.
- "Chirane Manor? I know it well. Nice to see we finally found a good use for that pompous ass.
I'll meet you there. We'll discuss the contents of my son's journal when the entire team is together."
As he walks out of the building, he'll add:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Try not to let the bloodfiends suffer when you kill them. They were the citizens of Northpoint once."
Return to Chirane Manor and Skordo and the baron will be discussing the situation:
- Skordo the Knife: "Lleraya has been here all along? And your son didn't do a damn thing about it?"
- Baron Alard Dorell: "According to Ellic's journal, yes. He seems to have been infatuated with the woman. Didn't even get alarmed when she started turning people into bloodfiends."
- Skordo the Knife: "More bloodfiends? I hate this. Just give me something to hit already! But it does sound like your son betrayed Northpoint, Baron."
- Gwendis: "It's the Remnant. It put Ellic under her spell. I'm surprised he was even able to write in his journal. Maybe that was his way of warning us."
If you speak to him before speaking to Skordo, he'll say:
- "According to my waste of a son's own journal, he practically gave Lleraya the keys to the city. What happened here was Ellic's fault.
I don't care what kind of powers Montclair's daughter possesses. A Dorell must be better than that!"
Speaking to him before you get the key:
- "My own son...I can't believe it. He has placed a stain on the honor of House Dorell that I may never be able to remove."
After getting the key when you head downstairs:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "I'm going with you to check on the inn. Skordo, when we give the signal, call in the army."
You can speak to him before heading out:
- "We can discuss whatever you like. Politics. The weather. Anything at all. But after we finish this mission."
Walk outside, and the baron will follow you:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Head to the inn. I'm right behind you."
Speaking to him after you unlock the inn's barrier:
- "I see plenty of Montclair's monsters, but no survivors. Let's keep looking."
As you're attacked by bloodfiends and former Northpoint citizens, he'll lament:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "My people … a ruler shouldn't have to cut down his own people like this …."
Approach the stairs to the third floor:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Let's check upstairs. Someone must have survived this nightmare."
While searching The Sloshing Tankard inn in Northpoint, you'll find you way to the top floor where you have a conversation with the Attic Door. Baron Alard Dorell will take over the negotiations revealing it was Blademaster Qariar you were conversing with:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "You! In the attic! I am Alard, Baron of House Dorell, and I swear you will be safe in my hands!"
- Blademaster Qariar: "It's good to see you're still alive, my old friend!"
- Baron Alard Dorell: "And you as well. But tell me—is Ellic hiding up there?"
- Blademaster Qariar: "I'm sorry to say, but no. I left him at your manor. He insisted that he wanted to stay."
Speak to Dorell before the blademaster and he'll say:
- "Qariar is the Blademaster of House Dorell. He's a good man. See what he has to say about all this."
After speaking to Qariar, he'll give you your next orders:
- "I'll give the signal. It's time to liberate Northpoint from these monsters.
Meanwhile, go to my manor and evict Montclair's daughter from the premises—with extreme prejudice."
After defeating Lady Lleraya Montclair at Dorell Manor, exit the manor and you'll overhear the following:
- Lord Ellic Dorell: "People, listen to me. Let's head outside and make sure the rest of the city is secure."
- Lord Ellic Dorell: "We'll return for the fallen later. Right now the living need us more."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "In the name of High King Emeric and in accordance with the laws of the land, I hearby order the arrest of Ellic Dorell for treason and the death of his kinsmen!"
- Lord Ellic Dorell: "But Father, it wasn't my fault!"
- Baron Alard Dorell: "You allowed an enemy into our city, into our home! Dozens fell to these monsters because you couldn't ignore a pretty face!"
- Lord Ellic Dorell: "I never meant for anyone to get hurt. I'm not even sure what happened. Lleraya said she wanted to help and I … I'm sorry."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Apologies won't bring our people back. It won't return honor to our family name. Guards! Take Ellic away."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "You are dead to me, Ellic. Dead to me."
- Lord Ellic Dorell: "I'm sorry I disappointed you, Father. It won't happen again."
Ellic will be escorted to the nearby stocks.
Speak to the baron and he'll relay his regrets:
- "You may not believe this, but that wasn't how I wanted our reunion to play out. But laws were broken. People died. I can't ignore our laws.
Not even to save my son." - Is this really the proper response? He was under a spell.
- "I left Ellic in charge. The safety of Northpoint was his responsibility! Someone has to answer for the deaths he caused this day.
If I was in his position, I would expect the same treatment."
-
- "Lleraya paid, and for that I thank you. But Ellic wasn't under a spell when he welcomed her into Northpoint.
That was his choice. I won't leave him here to make the same mistake again."
- "Lleraya paid, and for that I thank you. But Ellic wasn't under a spell when he welcomed her into Northpoint.
-
- "I appreciate the support. I also thank you for making that witch, Lleraya, pay for her crimes.
When we march on Montclair for a final time, I need to leave someone more responsible in charge of the city."
- "I appreciate the support. I also thank you for making that witch, Lleraya, pay for her crimes.
- Verandis wants us to bring the army to Shrouded Pass.
- "Shrouded Pass? That means Montclair is in the Doomcrag! Then the time has come to strike down the traitor and restore peace to our shores!
But first, I want to thank you for helping the people of Northpoint. I won't forget your bravery."
If you exit out of the conversation before turning in the quest, he will say:
- "So tell me, what news from Verandis? Has Count Ravenwatch's research finally borne fruit?"
- Verandis wants us to bring the army to Shrouded Pass. (Leads to same ending quest completion dialogue)
Puzzle of the PassEdit
- "It has been a grueling day. Restock and rest. We'll begin the march to the Doomcrag when you're ready."
- I'm ready now.
- "Then the time has come to meet Count Ravenwatch at the base of the Doomcrag.
Head for the Shrouded Pass and find Verandis. I'll gather our troops and meet you there." - I'll meet Verandis at the Shrouded Pass.
Speaking to him again:
- "You can reach the Pass by traveling west along the northern coast. And when we get there, I intend to make Montclair pay for the damage and sorrow he has brought to Rivenspire."
Once you reach the pass, you'll find the baron arguing with Countess Tamrith on the route to take:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "The large door straight ahead. Clearly, that's the main entrance. That's the way we should proceed."
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "This door is closer. It could provide a shorter path. Perhaps fewer bloodfiends to contend with."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "I'd rather cut through the enemies I can see than walk blindly into something I can't. The ruins might be full of traps!"
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "My dear Baron, you have an annoying habit of never listening to a word I say. You'll do as you please. As usual."
Speak to him, and he'll say:
- "I'm ready. No, I am more than ready! The time has come to put Baron Montclair down like the crazed dog he has become."
- I need to reach the first portal chamber.
- "Yes, yes. I am well aware of the Count's plan.
I suggest the direct approach. Straight up the path and through the door at the end. No skulking through Ayleid ruins, as the Countess wants to do. And every enemy is in clear view along the way."
Enter Ceynaril and open the second portal:
- "I don't know if I'll ever get used to traveling by portal. One moment you're there, the next moment you're here. It's positively disconcerting!"
- How fares the battle, Baron?
- "Better than I expected. We met with some resistance, but thanks to your efforts we've been able to move our troops quickly through this death trap."
- Are we ready to assault the Doomcrag?
- "We should be, once everyone has come through the portal.
Why don't you check with Count Ravenwatch and see if he's ready. I hate to say it, but his knowledge has been invaluable in all this."
After talking to him, he will go to the fire to wait:
- "Verandis claims he has a plan to vanquish Montclair, but he hasn't been forthcoming with the details.
Still, he's dealt honorably with us so far. I'm willing to let him take the lead at this point in the campaign."
The Lightless RemnantEdit
- "What word, my friend? Is Verandis ready for the troops to ascend the Doomcrag?"
- Verandis has ordered the troops to remain here and guard our flank.
- "Remain behind? And deny them the glory of being there when we achieve victory? Never!
When Verandis starts his march to the top of the Doomcrag, we will be with him every step of the way." - Verandis is worried about Montclair's forces regrouping behind us.
- "I'll leave enough soldiers to protect our flank. But our best soldiers are coming with me.
Tell the Count that we're coming with him—whether he likes it or not."
- "I'll leave enough soldiers to protect our flank. But our best soldiers are coming with me.
- If that's your decision.
- "As the leader of House Dorell and a member of Rivenspire's ruling triumvirate, it is.
Remind Ravenwatch that he isn't in charge here. We're going with him to face Montclair!"
- "As the leader of House Dorell and a member of Rivenspire's ruling triumvirate, it is.
Speaking with him again:
- "Montclair started this war, but I plan to finish it. My soldiers will be ready to move at a moment's notice."
Once inside the Doomcrag, the baron will be there:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Soldiers, spread out! Secure this chamber!"
- Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "You should have heeded my warning, Baron. This is no place for you."
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "You would deny our moment of glory, Count? The Light shines on us this day!"
- Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "There is no light here, Countess. Only darkness and death."
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "Arkay protect us! What is that?"
- Count Verandis Ravenwatch: "Baron Montclair. He's here."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Troops! On my command!"
The baron will eventually tire of Montclair's games:
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Come out and face us, you coward! You can't hide from us forever!"
Speaking to Dorell before speaking with Darien after Verandis sacrifices himself to save Rivenspire:
- "It's finally over, isn't it?
What a terrible price we had to pay for this victory, though. A lot of good men and woman died—including Verandis. For a vampire, he turned out to be an honorable man."
Darien will then start to marshal the survivors to move out.
- Darien Gautier: "All right, everyone. Let's gather up our injured and get out of here."
- Countess Eselde Tamrith: "Darien's right. There's nothing left for us here. We need to return to the High King and let him know what happened."
- Baron Alard Dorell: "Mage, we need a portal. To Shornhelm, if you please."
- Northpoint Defender: "Of course, Baron. Only take a moment."
- <Portal created>
- Northpoint Defender: "The portal to Shornhelm is open, my lord."
The Crown of ShornhelmEdit
Back in Shornhelm, the baron will be among the king's audience:
If you haven't started the quest yet, speaking to him:
- "My patience wears thin. If this crisis has taught us anything, it's a nation needs a single ruler. I just hope the High King sees that as well."
Otherwise when the quest starts:
- "We've come through much to reach this point. We won a battle for the very soul of Rivenspire.
Now comes the responsibility of rebuilding the kingdom. I hope High King Emeric gives me the opportunity to lead us through the difficulties ahead." - You think the High King should crown you as King of Shornhelm?
- "I do. I've come to respect Countess Tamrith. She's a bright, young woman. But she's not qualified to rule the kingdom.
The coming days demand decisive leadership and a firm hand. You know that as well as I. That makes me the perfect choice." - What would be your top priority as king?
- "First things first. We need to rebuild our defenses.
The Shornhelm Guard has been decimated by this civil war, and we'll need to recruit and retrain hundreds of young men and women to restore our strength."
If Countess Tamrith becomes Queen, he will vocally object.
- "I respect the High King's decision, but I can't hold my tongue—I have serious doubts about Queen Eselde's ability to rule.
I hope she proves me wrong, or all of Rivenspire will pay the price."
If the baron becomes king, he will say:
- "Thank you for the vote of confidence, my friend. I promise you, I will do everything in my power to restore Rivenspire to its former glory.
We will tell stories of your courage to inspire our soldiers. And you will always be welcome here."
NotesEdit
- If he is crowned the king of Shornhelm, his name will change to "King Alard".
