Detailed WalkthroughEdit

Kotholl is a mercenary in the Obsidian Gorge who asks you for a favor. He can be found near Scout Mamyne if you are on the quest Death Trap. Kotholl worked for some merchants, but they were killed in an attack on their camp. Kotholl now needs you to recover some items from the ruined traders' camp, which he claims are too important and dangerous to fall into the wrong hands. The items are in three locked chests, and the keys needed to open them are found on the bodies of the dead merchants. During the related Deshaan story quests, the camp will be occupied by the Maulborn, but after Plague Bringer there will only be non-hostile merchants and guards.

The three merchants whose bodies you need to find are Appraising-Spine, Frahjan, and Valyia. Appraising-Spine can be found due north of Kotholl, near a rocky outcropping and a fork in the path. Frahjan's body is found east of Kotholl, beside the path leading up to the Apothecarium. Follow the road northeast of Kotholl and turn north to find Valyia's body. Once you have gathered each of the merchant's keys, return to the center of the camp to open the chests.

The three chests are located under tents and are in fairly close proximity to each other. Frahjan's chest is to the north of Kotholl, on the south side of the road. Appraising-Spine's chest can be found east-southeast of Frahjan's, and Valyia's chest is slightly north of Appraising-Spine's. Upon opening each of the merchants' chests, you will discover that they contain trinkets that, although valuable, are hardly dangerous as Kotholl claimed they were.

Return to Kotholl, and ask him why he said the trinkets were so important. He confesses that he lied to you because the merchants owed him significant back pay, which he could no longer acquire because of their deaths. He says his family will starve without the money, and that he needs to sell the trinkets to prevent this. At this point you can choose to either let Kotholl take the trinkets or make him return them to the merchants' families.

Fine, take the trinkets. Just make sure it goes to feed your family.
"I don't know what to say. Thank you. I'll find a way to make up for this. I swear it."
Return these items to the families of the merchants. Ask them for your back pay.
"Return them to the spoiled children of wealthy merchants? Why should I? They won't miss a few trinkets!"
Return the goods, or I make sure the guards hear of this.
"I … you're right. That stuff doesn't belong to me. I'll make sure the families get their goods back. And I'm sorry for making up that story."

No matter which option you pick, the quest will be completed and you will be rewarded with the Merchant Guardian's Pauldrons.

  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
