Detailed WalkthroughEdit
While in the Arkthzand Cavern, you can find a stray piece of paper on a stone bench near the door to the Greymoor Caverns. When read, you will find it is a page from the notes of Falkfyr Snowmason—A scout of Solitude who appears to have gotten lost within the cavern many years ago after an accident. Upon starting the quest you follow his footsteps finding the places he mentions in his notes.
Falkfyr's Notes, Page 1 states that he went west to look for higher ground. Heading in that direction, you can find another page southwest of the Arkthzand Wayshrine, on the remains of a bridge. Read the second page and you learn that he went looking for water at a nearby stream. Go southwards and cross the stream to find a third page, next to an active Dwemer steam vent. On the third page, Falkfyr writes that with his protection from the Chaurus and water needs met, he would head to the nearby Dwarven ruins to search for food. To reach this next point, head upstream until you see the path that heads up towards the Library of Arkthzand ruins.
Another page can be found next to the outer wall, on the cliff past the stairs. The fourth page shows that Falkfyr was unable to get inside the buildings and was forced to start eating the mushrooms for sustenance. Falkfyr then writes that he would next go south to search a "grove of tree-like fungus". Once you reach ground level from your location, go south and cross the waterway. On the other side are several large mushroom trees, with a fifth page at the base of one of the fungi. Upon reading the page you will see that his mental state appears to have deteriorated rapidly and that something called the "Great Oom" was calling him southwards.
Follow the path south through the cave passage until you reach the sixth page which sits beneath another large fungi near a Lantern Mantis. To the south is Sentinel Point, and to the east Nalzthdbar Great Lift. His disturbing writings mention that the Great Oom told him of his new home to the north, which is where you must go. Follow the northeast passage around until you reach the Nighthollow Wayshrine. Where the path forms a junction, take the northern passage to arrive in a cavern full of fungi—the Mistgloom Thicket. In the center you will find a large, brighly-glowing mushroom specimen which appears to have grown out of the humanoid skeleton within which it is enmeshed. Next to it are the final notes of Falkfyr Snowmason. Upon reading you will compile the pages into Falkfyr's Complete Report.
After learning his final thoughts, you can search his nearby backpack for anything useful:
- <The pack is empty save for some gold, an old helm, and a number of dessicated [sic], half-eaten mushrooms.>
- Complete Quest.
You will then receive the Darkgazer Helm and some gold.

After waiting for a rescue that didn't come, Falkfyr headed west from the Dwarven door to search for high ground. I should start by searching for any prominent overlooks west of the northern door into Blackreach.
Objective: Find the High Ground

|
Falkfyr made it safely to a good vantage point, where he left another parchment note. I should read it and see where he went next.
Objective: Read Falkfyr's Notes, Page 2

Low on provisions, Falkfyr was forced to venture into the chaurus-infested wilds and make for the river to the north. He needed to find a safe place to refill his canteen. I should search the riverbank for another note.
Objective: Find the Note by the Stream

|
I found another note from Falkfyr in the shadow of a dwarven platform. I should read it to see where he went next.
Objective: Read Falkfyr's Notes, Page 3

Falkfyr found water. He also learned that the chaurus would leave him alone if he was smeared in chaurus ichor. However, he still lacked food, so he headed to the nearby ruins to forage. I should look there next.
Objective: Search the Dwarven Ruins
|
|
I found another of Falkfyr's notes outside the Dwarven ruins. He made it this far, at least. I should read the note and learn what happened next.
Objective: Read Falkfyr's Notes, Page 4

Falkfyr failed to find food in the Dwarven ruins, and he was forced to eat Blackreach mushrooms to survive. Luckily, they didn't poison him. Refreshed, he set off for a grove of fungal trees to the south. I should look there for his next note.
Objective: Search the Fungal Grove

|
Falkfyr left another note in an odd grove of fungal trees. I should see what it says.
Objective: Read Falkfyr's Notes, Page 5

Falkfyr's latest note was a jumble of strange words and phrases. Perhaps eating mushrooms affected his mind. The note mentioned something he called the Great Oom off to the south. I may find out more if I head in that direction.
Objective: Find the Great Oom

|
I found yet another note left by Falkfyr. This one lies at the base of one of Blackreach's giant mushrooms. I should read it and see if it offers a clue as to where Falkfyr went next.
Objective: Read Falkfyr's Notes, Page 6

|
Falkfyr's latest note was odd and disturbing. A steady diet of Blackreach mushrooms clearly affected him, but he mentioned a new home to the north … and treasure. I should see if he left something behind.
Objective: Find Falkfyr's Home

|
I found one last note, an abandoned backpack, and a skeleton, likely Falkfyr's. Hopefully, this last note will offer some insight into the state of his mind at the end.
Objective: Read Falkfyr's Notes, Page 7

Falkfyr's last notes were the ravings of a madman. He seemed to believe that he was a spore and that he would grow into an oom. Despite his grim fate, there may be treasure and other spoils left in his pack. I should see what I can find.
Objective: Search the Scout's Pack

- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
