When you first approach him, he'll be soothing one of his nix-hounds:
- "Easy, Siphonix, easy."
You'll find Vartis sneaking outside Malak's Maw:
- "My nix-hounds are nervous. They smell Orcs in the pass."
- Orcs?
- "Citizens have been disappearing from the roads near here. I came to investigate and found these intruders. Orcs.
- They've been a problem in the mountains before, but this band is unusually aggressive and organized."
- Sounds like trouble. Want me to look into it?
- "I can't officially authorize it—but it sure would be useful to know why the Orcs are here.
- I saw an Orc studying a letter. Might be orders from somewhere. If you could get hold of a copy ...."
- I'll secure a copy of the Orcs' orders.
If you speak to him again before leaving, he says:
- "Watch yourself. Tangling with Orcs is dangerous work."
After you retrieved the documents and return to him:
- "Ah, you're back. What did you discover?"
- The Orcs call themselves the Oathbound. You'll want to look at these documents.
- "Let me see what you found.
Covenant mercenaries? You've done well to bring this to me, traveler. I'll make sure this news reaches Mournhold."
After the quest:
- "This is ill news. But Mournhold will be glad to get it before the Orcs establish a foothold."
