Hroggar

Hroggar is a Nord lumberjack currently enthralled by Alva, a vampire. Hroggar lives in Alva's house and will turn hostile should you enter while he's there. As you will learn from the townsfolk, Hroggar's wife and daughter recently perished when their house caught fire. Hroggar moved in with Alva the next day, raising suspicions. You will be tasked by Jarl Idgrod Ravencrone to investigate the matter during the related quest. As a lumberjack, Hroggar will pay you for any chopped firewood.

Hroggar wakes up at 7am and immediately starts safeguarding Alva's house, until his workday starts at 9am and he heads over to the local lumber mill for a day of chopping wood with his colleagues Thonnir and Jorgen. By 7pm he returns to Alva's house and once again stays on the lookout for any intruders. He'll stay alert until his bedtime at midnight. Should Hroggar survive the events of Laid to Rest, then he will allow himself some relaxation at night and start drinking from 8pm until his bedtime.

He wears a set of farm clothes and a pair of boots. He is equipped with a steel war axe, and carries a key to Alva's house, as well as a selection of common loot and gold.

Related QuestsEdit

  • Chop Wood: Get paid to chop firewood. (radiant)
  • Laid to Rest: Investigate a tragic house fire, and discover an insidious plot against the town.

DialogueEdit

When spoken to normally, he will seem generally wary and pessimistic.

"I... I'm not one for talk. Try to keep to myself."
"I just try and do my job, and not to think about what's happened. Try to find what happiness I can."
"Ignore the talk of spirits and creatures and such. It's just superstition."
"There's enough real troubles in the world without making new ones up."

If you have not discovered Alva's true intentions during the quest Laid to Rest, Hroggar will also tell you:

"Alva's been good to me ever since... well, since the fire."

You can also mention encountering his daughter once you've interacted with her:

I saw Helgi's ghost in the ruins of your house.
"Really? How nice."
She's your daughter. Don't you care?
"I have Alva to take care of now. I don't need Helgi anymore."

The same goes for when you've talked to Thonnir after encountering Laelette:

Thonnir says Alva was the last person to see Laelette... alive.
"She came by so Alva could kiss her goodbye. Then she left to join the Stormcloaks."
She said goodbye to Alva, but not to her own husband?
"He was cruel to her. He would beat her every night. It's no wonder she fled in the middle of the night."

After being freed from Alva, he'll instead be grateful:

"Thank you for saving me from Alva. I was completely under her evil spell. I'll never forgive myself for what happened to Helgi and my wife."

ConversationsEdit

Hroggar can be seen having this conversation with his master in her house, should you sneak inside:

Hroggar: "How are you feeling?"
Alva: "I feel wonderful, just like every night."
Hroggar: "Do you need anything? Are you hungry?"
Alva: "Oh Hroggar, you know I'm always hungry. Don't worry, I'll eat when I need to."
Alva: "Oh, look! We have company!"

NotesEdit

  • If Hroggar should happen to die before Laid to Rest begins, this will not prevent the quest from triggering and proceeding as normal.
  • The internal alias used in the scene between him and Alva identifies him as Bern.

BugsEdit

  • After you've killed Alva, Hroggar's disposition towards you gets a hit (-2), even though he will thank you for saving him from Alva. He will also continue to use some lines of dialogue from when he was her thrall.
  • After quest completion, Hroggar isn't added back to the Morthal crime faction, which may lead to him being treated as aggressive, and can lead to fights with guards.
