Valley of Mephala
An old development map showing the Mephala Valley region

The Valley of Mephala or Mephala Valley was a region in the Mournhold District of Morrowind, nestled within the confines of the Mephalain Mountains.

Developer commentary from 2016 indicates that the region was given a name distinct from the otherwise identical Mephalain Mountains in order to allow for unique, foggier weather patterns. The region was merged with the Mephalain Mountains in the 16.09 release in September 2016, with the merged region being renamed to Mephalan Vales. The foggyness of the Valley of Mephala area was maintained by increasing the fog prevalence within the wider Mephalan Vales region.

As of the 23.10 release in late 2023, the outline of the valley remains visible and distinctive, with it containing a major shrine to Mephala, named Shambalu, and the extensive Thelaro Ancestral Tomb. A statue of Mephala watches over the area from the east end of the gorge.

The location features at the climax of the Akamora Fighter's Guild questline, with a cultist of Mephala providing some context of its past spiritual significance:

"There is a history to this place that began long before the Empire and your Guild came here, before the egg mines and the noble families of Akamora were established, even before the rise of the Almsivi and ruin of Dun Akafell. Thousands of years ago a wind whispered to our ancestors from the Mephalain valley, and our ancestors would honor it and listen. Those who remember still listen."
