Ra-Netu is a Yoku term used by Redguards to describe the risen dead, specifically zombies raised from the bodies of their ancestors.[1]

According to Redguard religious belief, striking the dead carries with it a terrible curse and is considered an act of dishonor. Because of this, fighting back against Ra-Netu and other forms of necromancy is difficult for the people of Hammerfell.[2] The Ansei Wards provide protection over the dead of Alik'r; as long as their bodies are consecrated in the name of Tu'whacca, they cannot be raised by even the most powerful necromancy.[3] As a result, most Ra-Netu are raised using unconsecrated corpses, such as those lost at sea or bodies taken from forgotten graveyards.[4][1]

The Ash'abah as a pariah tribe of Redguards who are shunned from mainstream society for battling Ra-Netu and other undead in battle. Their tribe follows an ancient tradition dating back to the First Era, and are tolerated and even covertly supported by the Forebears as a necessity.[1] During the rule of King Fahara'jad of Sentinel, the Ash'abah were called on twice by the king to defend Alik'r from the Withered Hand. The Ash'abah helped repel the cult's assault on Sentinel by destroying their army of Ra-Netu,[1] and then several years later circa 2E 582 they once again aided the king in recovering the stolen Ansei Wards and defeating the Withered Hand for good.[5] Without the protection of the Ansei Wards, the cult had been able to resurrect powerful Ra Gada ancestors from consecrated burial sites across the Alik'r.[6]

NotesEdit

  • In Yoku, Ra-Netu roughly translates to "Turned Warrior".[7][8]
