Detailed WalkthroughEdit

Start by speaking to Clerk Reyna outside the northeast entrance to Traitor's Tor. She will warn you about the dangers of the tor and suggest you see Scholar Cantier for more information. Alternately, you can go directly to Cantier at the south entrance to begin the quest without Reyna's direction.

Scholar Cantier will tell you that he is trying to discover what happened to King Ranser in his final moments. He needs you to escort him past the undead to the central tower. Once you reach the tower, he will run ahead into a room with a skull on a table. He comments that this might be Ranser's decapitated head as rumors say he was betrayed by his chief military advisor, General Dathieu. Examining the skull will cause the disembodied voice of Dathieu to say it is his skull, and he will send you into a vision of the past to prove what happened.

Your character will temporarily take the appearance of a Breton lieutenant from Ranser's last stand at the tor. Speak to General Dathieu on the steps of the tower, and he will tell you that it's time to surrender but Ranser won't give up. Before he vanished, Ranser's mage told him of a last-ditch enchantment that would help them hold the Tor. Dathieu wants you to carry out the enchantment and gives you a Packet of Bone and Ash to pour in each of four braziers surrounding the central tower. He hopes that if the enchantment doesn't work, Ranser will see reason and surrender before the rest of his defenders die. Go to the West Tower, Southwest Tower, Southeast Tower, and East Tower in any order. When you pour the packet on a brazier, the flame will turn blue.

Return to the central tower and go up the stairs to tell Ranser you finished the task. He will be undeterred when you tell him nothing happened. He says he sent Captain Taern to attack at the breach in the north wall and that you should inform General Dathieu to charge the Orcs to the south while he retrieves his sword from the North Tower and joins the battle.

Head back out of the tower to update Dathieu. He says the king has gone mad and must be restrained. He also tells you that if Taern insists on following the king's orders, you should use a sleeping scroll on her and the guards. He says he will give Ranser one last chance to surrender and avoid throwing away the lives of his men on a lost cause. Captain Taern and two King's Defenders can be found north of the Central Tower. You can either retrieve the scroll from the Damaged Chest in the northeastern ruins and then use it on Taern, or you can use persuasion to convince her to delay the charge.

When you have prevented Taern's attack, go to the North Tower to witness the meeting between Dathieu and Ranser. Dathieu will stab the king in the back, assuming he has ended the bloodshed. However, Reezal-Jul's magic will cause a red mist to form under the king's body, and he will be brought back as an undead skeleton. He will then curse his betrayer, and the general will catch fire, hold his head in pain, and drop dead. Ranser says he will scatter Dathieu's bones to prevent the undead spell from taking effect on him. You will then wake up yourself in the Central Tower again.

Tell Scholar Cantier what you saw. He is excited and says he will wait upstairs while you gather Dathieu's scattered bones. Take General Dathieu's Skull from the table. You will also need to collect General Dathieu's Bones from piles on the ground in 3 more nearby locations to the east, south, and west. When you gather the final bones, Dathieu will be magically reassembled as an undead skeleton. He will run northward, saying that perhaps he can finally end the mad king.

Follow Dathieu to the North Tower. As you approach, he will challenge the undead Ranser and the two will begin fighting. Kill Ranser, and Dathieu will turn into a blue orb and zip into the nearby tower. Go inside to speak to his ghost. He will be relieved to have redeemed himself and ended the curse. He says he hopes Ranser's reputation will not be damaged further since he was once a wise and courageous king. He will then vanish in a puff of blue smoke.

If you go outside, you will see that Ranser's undead soldiers have been replaced by wolves. The quest ends here, but you can also go back to the Central Tower to speak to Scholar Cantier who is happy to be able to explore the ruins and piece together the whole story for his book.

NotesEdit

  • King Ranser's Tirade can be found up the stairs of the Central Tower and The True Fate of King Ranser can be found in the Northwest Tower.
  • If you complete this quest prior to The Wayward Son you will have an additional option at the end of that quest.
  • Getting hit by hails of arrows in the vision of the past will cause your character to flinch down temporarily, but no damage is received.
  • Picking up the sleep scroll alone is enough to lock you into that option, as it will no longer be able to speak with the guards.
  • The sleep scroll can be used against the guards while standing far away from them, as long as line of sight can be established.
    • Using the scroll from far away will complete the objective but the captain and her guards will not visually fall asleep.
  • During the objective to go to the meeting, Dathieu also still appears at his original position at the central tower. The option to talk to him is visible but nothing happens when using it.
  • Dathieu's health bar will still appear full after being killed by Ranser.
  • Cantier will appear twice in the central tower after the vision.
    • This is fixed once the quest is completed.
  • The description of the axe rewarded for completing the quest mentions it was the weapon used to kill the king, while in the vision Dathieu kills the king by stabbing him in the back with a sword.

  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
