Brithaur

Brithaur is a Wood Elf living in Crucible, New Sheoth. He continues to annoy the other residents of Crucible with his thievery. For this reason, Earil requests that you get rid of him. If you talk to Brithaur, he tells you that he will end his crime spree only when you bring him five Flawless Pearls to complete his collection. During the non-journal quest, The Paranoid Roof Watcher, it is revealed that Brithaur's current residence is stolen from another citizen of Crucible.

He wears a pair of patchwork pants, a patchwork shirt and a pair of scruffy shoes. He also carries his key and a small amount of gold. Looting his corpse will reveal his heart which is used in his quest.

Brithaur explores the city every day, looking for potential opportunities for theft. He sleeps from midnight to 8am upstairs in his house, and will have a two hour breakfast downstairs when he wakes up. After an hour of wandering around inside, he will exit the house at 11am for some reconnaissance. He will either go to Earil's Mysteries, Things Found or Cutter's Weapons, which he chooses randomly. If he was persuaded to stop thieving during his related quest he will instead wander around Crucible, though if you decided to ask Kithlan to deal with him, he will continue his visits due to a bug. If the Sacellum isn't being used for the Main Quest, he will break off his session of stealing at 2pm for two hours of worship there. Otherwise he will continue to wander around his chosen location until it is interrupted again by his three hour supper at 6pm. After a busy day, he will relax at home until bed time.

DialogueEdit

When you first approach him, he will spit:

"You got a problem?"

If you speak to him, though, he will be markedly more polite while revealing his compulsive tendencies:

"Well, hello there. It's good to see such a well-equipped individual as yourself around these parts. But you look tired. Carrying all that gear will do that to you. I'd be glad to shoulder some of the burden... relieve you of that expensive stuff. Or is there something else I can take from -- I mean, help you with?"

When leaving conversation he will say:

"Excuse me, I have important things to do."

RumorsEdit

You may hear about Brithaur from concerned fellow citizens of Crucible, who will comment:

"I hear that Earil is fed up with Brithaur's antics. He really wants something done about it."

To which others will reply:

"If Brithaur doesn't watch it, he may disappear one day."
"I bet he does. That Brithaur sure is a pain in the ass."
"Indeed. I'm surprised Earil hasn't taken matters into his own hands."

Other residents of Crucible and Bliss will also comment along similar lines:

"Everyone is tired of Brithaur's antics."
"The merchants in Crucible are getting tired of Brithaur stealing from them."

To which others will reply:

"It serves them right for opening shops in Bliss [sic]."
"All the merchants are tired of his thievery. Ask any of them."

You may also hear these complaints in the wilderness, provided you have completed The Lady of Paranoia:

"I understand the merchants of Crucible are having problems with Brithaur."
Atrabhi (Dementia): "I understand none of the merchants of Crucible are having problems with Brithaur. He's their favorite guy."
Halion: "Of the bumbling thief by the name of Brithaur of this I can only say. The man named Earil who owns a shop wishes he would go away."

Others will then reply:

"I understand he has light fingers and deep pockets."
Atrabhi (Dementia): "I understand he is an extremely upright citizen. As good as they come."
Halion: "A man with pockets as deep as a cave whom everyone wishes would just go away!"

Quest-related EventsEdit

Any of the rumors above will add a topic on Brithaur to residents of the Isles. Ask them about the Wood Elf and they will explain:

Brithaur
"Earil has a big problem with Brithaur. I don't know exactly what the problem is, but it's safe to say Earil is making a huge fuss over it. Earil owns a magic shop in town called Earil's Mysteries. If you want to know more, I'd suggest you ask him yourself."

This will begin the related quest. Should you follow up on the rumors and speak to Earil, he will admit his dislike for Brithaur:

Brithaur
"That lout? Yes, he's a thorn in my side that never seems to go away! I'd have his heart on a plate if I could! I wish he'd simply disappear from the streets of New Sheoth forever! Oh look, just talking about it has given me another gray hair!"

If you approach him now, he will say:

"You looking for me?"

Asking him about himself while his disposition is below 65 won't net you much:

Brithaur
"Oh, how could anyone have a problem with me? Come now!"

If you raise it sufficiently, he will however spill the beans:

Brithaur
"I know what people say about me. I'm not completely stupid, you know. It's just that I like to collect things. All sorts of things. Shiny things, valuable things. I can't help myself. My collection is almost complete. All I need are five Flawless Pearls and I'm done. How hard could that be?"
Flawless Pearls
"Beautiful gems, they are. They can be found all over the Shivering Isles in treasure chests and the like."

You can now decide whether to find the pearls, kill him or (provided you have completed either the Ritual of Dementia or the Main Quest) ask Kithlan to deal with him.

If you choose to satisfy his obsession, he will betray his impatience when approached and greeted:

"You sure took your time."
"So, you have the pearls? Or perhaps any other things of value I can have -- I mean, hold for you?"
Flawless Pearls
"You have them? Please, please! Hand them over!"
Perhaps later.
"How can you do that to me? Of all the nerve!"
Here you are. (Give Pearls)
"Oh thank you! My collection is finally complete! Well, my thieving days have finally come to an end. I promise never to set foot in any of the shops in Crucible ever again. Tell everyone not to worry, I won't be bothering them any longer."

After this he will be alternatively annoyed and ecstatic when approaching and greeting him:

"I thought we were done speaking."
"My collection is complete! My collection is complete! Glory days! Wheeeeee."

At this point he will be true to his word and will stop visiting shops in town, instead preferring to randomly wander around the district during his previous browsing times of 11am to 2pm and 4pm to 6pm. Speaking to Earil now will have him say:

Brithaur
"What? He's promised not to come around here anymore? Fantastic! Took you long enough though... I don't know how you did it, but I appreciate it. And by appreciate, I mean reward. Enjoy."

Should you report him to Kithlan, he will promise to handle it:

Brithaur
"Yes, I've heard of Brithaur's "exploits" in Crucible. Up until now, I thought he was harmless. But now he's become a genuine troublemaker, eh? That's my speciality. Don't worry, it will be handled."

Despite this, nothing really happens and Brithaur continues his previous schedule, though you will be able to complete the quest by talking to Earil:

Brithaur
"So, you've dealt with the problem, eh? I like the sound of that. How do I know he won't come back?"
You'll just have to trust me.
"Hmmmm. Very well. I don't take you for a liar. Here is your reward, as promised."

If you instead decide to kill him during the quest, his epitaph in the New Sheoth Graveyard reads: "In the end, his last breath was stolen from him." Earil's dialogue will also be different:

I have proof. (Give heart)
"Very nice. In fact, I may be able to make use of this particular item. Seems like a nice potential replacement. You've more than earned your reward. I believe a bit of a bonus is in order. Well done."

Stage-dependent rumorsEdit

At different stages in the Main Quest, Brithaur will share several rumors with you or other NPCs:

  • Newcomers are entering the Shivering Isles. With new people comes new treasure!
  • They're saying that the Gatekeeper has been killed. Was it you? Did you do it? Did you get anything good from him?
  • The Resonator is fixed again. What a shame. I looked forward to meeting new people. They always have such nice things.
  • Thadon has his Chalice back. I wonder if he'll let me take a look at it....
  • I once met Herdir after a misunderstanding about some candlesticks in Syl's great hall. He's not a bad fellow, actually.
  • The Torch is relit. Wonderful. Just makes it a bit tougher to sneak around.
  • It's a shame Syl's gone. She didn't pay a lot of attention to what was going on.
  • Thadon gone.... I wonder if his quarters are still guarded.
  • Did you hear? The Fringe was attacked! How horrible!
  • The Gatekeeper has been rebuilt. I wonder if I could get a little piece of the old one.
  • The armies of Sheogorath march again!
  • Sheogorath is gone? If he is gone, then who is watching us?
  • Do you know the best part about the end of a war? Picking the bodies clean of their treasure.

Unused DialogueEdit

  • Brithaur had a series of greetings that would have seen him steal a single gold coin from you. The first would only be heard once, while the second and third would be randomly heard thereafter, with the latter resulting a further theft. However, as soon as you enter the Isles these lines are overridden by his greeting above, meaning you will never hear them.
"Why, hello there! I'm Brithaur! It's a pleasure to meet someone who doesn't judge me so harshly. The people here, they have some ideas about me. But you, you seem so pleasant! And dressed so well! You must have a very full purse. Very full indeed. You are a very fortunate soul. Well, I've got to be going -- many treasures to find around here, yes indeed! We'll speak again, I'm sure!" (steal 1 gold; only first time)
"It's you again! I'm so pleased to see you!"
"It's you again! I'm so pleased to see you! Look at what you have! Is this new? Let me get a closer look! Exquisite!" (steals, 33%)
  • There is an additional dialogue line which was presumably intended to be used if you pretended to have sufficient pearls. However, as the parent line checks whether you have all five pearls, the topic will never appear:
Here you are. (Give Pearls)
"Just what are you trying to pull?"
  • Brithaur also has two goodbye lines which you will never hear as they are overridden by other lines or by his AI:
"Be careful around here."
"Finally! My collection is complete!"

BugsEdit

  • If you ask Kithlan to "deal with" Brithaur, you will be able to complete the quest but it will have no impact on Brithaur's schedule due to faulty scripting. As a result, he will continue to visit Crucible shops even after the quest. ?
