  1. Speak to the quest giver.
  2. Challenge them to a brawl.
  3. Win the brawl.
  4. Speak to them again.

Detailed WalkthroughEdit

If you talk to one of the quest givers they will eventually challenge you to a brawl. The dialogue and circumstances vary from person to person and are listed in the table above. Accepting the challenge means that you place a 100 gold bet on the outcome. You must then brawl them and win. Standard brawling rules apply and use of things such as hostile magic, shouts, and weapons will instantly change it from a brawl to a criminal assault.

Brawling should be relatively easy if you're wearing any armor and have gained at least a few levels. Only low level players on higher difficulties may have issues with winning a brawl. If you are having problems, use some potions and spells with lingering effects and don't forget about racial powers. It may be of use as well to read more in-depth information on unarmed combat. You do not gain any experience from the unarmed combat during a brawl, although you may gain experience in armor skills.

You can only win a brawl with any given person once. If you lose the brawl, you will not get your wagered money back, although you will be able to get a rematch. If you win the brawl, you will get your wager back and receive an additional 100 gold.

NotesEdit

  • There are other quests that simply involve brawling such as Bloody Nose that are in fact separate from this quest, despite being nearly identical in nature.
  • When you engage in a brawl, viewing NPCs become immersed and tend to run around the fight. This can be quite annoying, as they can potentially run between you and your combatant which can lead you to accidentally punching one of the excited onlookers, which counts as an assault. Also, if you run away from the fight and exit through any doors, the first four NPCs who witness your fight will keep following you and will still think you are in a brawl until you fast travel.
  • Certain considerations apply to the brawl itself:
    • Although your opponent may say "No magic," you can in fact use magic on yourself, such as armor, healing, or ward spells. However, using spells on your opponent, even beneficial healing spells, will count as assault.
    • Wearing the Ebony Mail or using a cloaking spell will also count as assault. However, wearing Ahzidal's Armor of RetributionDB does not.
    • You can use a shield bash to "punch" your opponent.
  • Winning the brawl will raise the disposition of the challenger. This will allow you to take low-value items they own, and they may become available as followers or potential marriage partners. See the individual NPC pages for details.
  • Because this is a favor quest which affects the quest giver's disposition, it will count towards the "Help the People" part of the thane quest for the quest giver's hold (with the exception of quest givers who live in Orc strongholds).

BugsEdit

  • Sometimes your opponent may draw their weapon and attack you like in a normal fight. In this case, your only options are to yield or kill them (except Rolff, who is essential), and it is unlikely you will be able to properly complete the quest even if you try again. ?
  • A known issue with no clear-cut fix or cause is that occasionally the option to enact a brawl with a listed NPC does not show. This bug does link with the inability to begin radiant quests with NPCs in that the issue seems to affect all similar quests on that save (can be occurrent on multiple saves at once. ?
  • Having the Fists of Steel perk may cause your opponent to remain in bleedout mode after you win the fight. Unequipping your Heavy Armor gauntlets will resolve this. ?

Quest StagesEdit

  • All of the quest stages are empty: 0, 10, 20, 200.
Notes
  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage Favor017 stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest Favor017.
