The Skyrim Script Extender, or SKSE, is a third party utility that uses code injection techniques to greatly extend the capabilities of Skyrim's scripting virtual machine, as well as allowing an interface through which other mods can also further extend the engine.

To benefit from SKSE's enhanced features, the game must be launched through SKSE's own loader program instead of launching Skyrim normally. Most mod managers (such as Mod Organizer or Wrye Bash) support this, as does the Steam version for Skyrim LE.

SKSE will not work on any Microsoft Store or Gamepass version of Skyrim due to the fact that they are "locked down" similar to game consoles. Being locked down means it won't allow any modifications of the game's scripts.
