A Wamasu eating a juvennile of its species

Cannibalism is the act of eating a member of the same kind or species. Cannibalism is somewhat common in nature, often the strong preying upon the weak of their species.[1][2][3] Among sapient beings, the term cannibal is also sometimes used to describe intelligent beings that eat other intelligent beings regardless of species.[4]

Cannibalism of intelligent beings is a taboo in many of the major cultures of Tamriel, with one of the notable exceptions being in Valenwood, where ritual cannibalism is part of the faith of the native Bosmer.[5][6] Often among the more societally developed races of Tamriel, the consumption of certain primitive or violent races is considered acceptable.[7][8] Inversely, it is common for many members of less developed races to eat members of the more "human" races.[9][10][4][11]

Green PactEdit

The Green Pact is a strict code upheld by many of the Bosmer of Valenwood[5] to preserve the Green. It is said to have guided their existence since the beginning of the "great story". Its rules are clear. Do not harm the forests of Valenwood. Do not eat anything made from plant life. Eat only meat. When enemies are conquered, their meat must be eaten, not left to rot. Do not kill wastefully. Do not take on the shape of beasts.[12]

The cannibalistic "Meat Mandate" of the Pact sets them apart religiously from other cultures. The requirement to eat fallen enemies before three days pass is perhaps the most shocking part of the Pact to outsiders.[5][6] Though many Bosmer still try to respect the Green Pact, the practice of eating dead enemies diminished by the Second Era, and is typically only practiced in the most remote villages.[6] The family members of the warrior who slaughtered the enemy may help him with his meal.[5][6] Bosmer who honor this facet of the Green Pact typically attempt to prepare themselves before large battles by fasting.[5]

Orcs and Goblin-kenEdit

The earliest known Aldmeri explorer of Tamriel, Topal the Pilot recounted encountering supposed cannibal Orcs in southern High Rock during his travels. Scholars have debated whether these folk were actually Orcs or some separate "cursed folk".[14]

Some Orcs have wondered about the ethics of consuming the meat of Ogres, though priests of Malacath during the Interregnum claimed that Ogre innards were commonly used in ancient Orc dishes.[7] Additionally the consumption of Harpies would typically be considered cannibalism to many, but Wrothgarian Harpies were considered moral to eat as generations of inbreeding had caused them loose all their intelligence.[15]
