Detailed WalkthroughEdit
You can start this quest either by finding a note in the sewers below Baron von Zarov's Manor, or by speaking to Lord Baldor Varian during The Baron von Zarov Files: The Case of the Missing Body quest. The note will direct you to one of von Zarov's contacts, a young Dunmer girl named Miaren Girendas, who works in Magh-Gra's Tack and Supplies. She'll tell you that the baron left Skingrad in the company of a pretty young woman who fits Lucy Varian's description (and who was most decidedly not dead); they were headed north, and von Zarov said he wanted to stop by Fort Carmala (a known vampire lair) on the way.
Fort Carmala is located due south of Chorrol, not far from Hackdirt. You'll have to fight your way down to the second level; there, you'll find Lucy, who (of course) has been turned into a vampire. You can choose to kill her immediately, or you can curb your bloodthirsty urges and talk to her first. She'll tell you that von Zarov didn't kidnap her like everyone thinks - she left willingly, because she's in love with him. It turns out that Lord Baldor Varian locks her up in a cage at night, and she doesn't think he's human. If you want proof, you could check in Grayrock Cave. She'll also say that von Zarov left some time ago, and she doesn't know where he went.
If you kill Lucy without speaking with her, then continue to follow von Zarov to Chorrol. However, asking around town, no one has seen or heard of von Zarov.
At this point, there is little you can do about the baron, but you can continue investigating Baldor.

- Notes
- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in random order.
- If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
It is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage BANSkingradTrailOfBlood stage, wherestageis the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages. See SetStage for more information.
