Aera the Devout

Aera the Devout, a Nord monk, is the leader of the Talos worshipers at the Camp of the Devout. During A Delicate Situation, guard captain Adius Vilius will ask you to help convince Aera and her followers to stop worshiping.

Aera spends her days pacing around the camp and warming herself by the campfire, sleeping from 2am to 10am. She wears brown robes and monk's boots and also carries a random selection of gold, lockpicks, gems, jewelry, food and drink. Aera is armed with an iron mace and can cast the spells Firebolt, Healing and Ironflesh.

DialogueEdit

When you first approach the camp, she will draw her weapon and challenge you:

"Ho there, traveler. Who are you? Are you with the Thalmor? Tell me. Now."

If you say you aren't, she relents:

"Then I suppose I can afford to stow my weapon. Hmm. I hope for your sake you're not lying."
Are you up to something illegal?
"I.... first, answer the question. I'm not telling you who we are. Not yet."
I'm <Alias=Player>. And no, I'm not with the Thalmor.
"Then I suppose I can afford to stow my weapon. Hmm. I hope for your sake you're not lying."
None of your concern.
"Hmph. I suppose if you were going to rat us out to the Imperials you'd have run off with your tail between your legs by now."

Either way, she will conclude:

"Besides, we've nothing to be ashamed of. Go on, then. Ask whatever you'd like. Come and go as you please. But we'll be watching you."

You can then ask her a few questions:

How'd you end up out here?
"Have you been living under a rock? Talos worship's a crime now. Armion and his justiciars have moved into Bruma. I didn't feel like sitting around in Bruma like mammoths lining up for the milking. Turns out a few others had similar ideas. And so we left."
What can you tell me about your congregation?
"Not much to tell. We reject that fancy treaty the Emperor signed with those Dominion dogs. We believe in Talos. We worship Talos. And we'll keep worshipping Talos. Treaties be damned. Politics be damned. Thalmor abduction squads be damned."
Tell me about yourself.
"I've been faithful to Talos ever since I was first old enough to understand the tales. The Thu'um... to ascend to divinity! My grandmother would tell me the stories. Tiber Septim's great deeds - and his rise to godhood. A true inspiration. I believe in heroism. I believe in the resilience of man - not the supremacy of elves. And I'm not about to let a damned treaty change that."

After this first meeting she will greet you with:

"I'm Aera. I lead the congregation here. We worship Talos, and by the Divines, we make no bones about it!"
"We shouldn't need to hide. Soon, when the Thalmor are defeated - soon, we'll be able to step into the light!"

When exiting conversation she will say:

"Walk always in the path of the Nine Divines."
"Farewell. And may Talos preserve the Empire in the months ahead."

A Delicate SituationEdit

After Adius Vilius has tasked you with convincing Aera and her band to lie low, when challenged you can now reply:

I know you're Talos worshippers. And no, I'm not going to kill you.
"Then I suppose I can afford to stow my weapon. Hmm. I hope for your sake you're not lying."

At this point, you can tell her:

Captain Adius sent me. Your Talos worship is causing issues.
"Sending someone to stop us worshipping Talos? Has the captain gone mad? I always considered the captain a man of honor, a man of tolerance. Someone who refused to be a puppet to the Thalmor and their shameful demands. Why such a sharp change in the captain's outlook? What could he, or you, possibly say that would lead us to renounce the god-hero of mankind?"

You now have three options, the first two requiring you to pass an Average and Hard Speech check respectively:

He doesn't want you to stop worshipping Talos. He wants you to be more subtle.
"I see. That's... well, it's more likely to happen than asking us to renounce a divine. But why should we live in shame of our faith?"
If you don't, the Thalmor will tighten their grip on Bruma. (Persuade)
"Do you think we are people of no dignity? We will not run scared of the Thalmor. We'll rend them limb from limb if need be."
"I... see. That... makes a lot of sense. Very well, then. We will lay low for the time being. Let Adius know we're sorry for any problems this has caused for him, or may cause him. He's a good man, clearly. Any other guard captain would have handed us over to the Thalmor, no questions asked."
You should stop worshipping Talos. Adius doesn't want you to, but it's safest.
"You're having a laugh, surely? We've devoted our entire lives to worshipping Tiber Septim. The Concordat only strengthened our resolve. We will not stop worshipping Talos. Never. We have our principles, and we have our dignity."
Talos was an Emperor. He compromised for the greater good. Can you? (Persuade)
"Ha! You really are an addled skeever if you think we'd ever agree to that."
"I... I can't argue with that. I hate the Thalmor, I really do. But I suppose denying them the pleasure of dominating Bruma is a greater victory for Talos than getting sent off to Blue River as a heretic. Fine, fine. We'll stop. You have my - our - word."
Just continue as you are. Keep worshipping Talos.
"I'm glad you've seen sense. Though I am concerned by what you said. Captain Adius is a good man. If he's concerned about Bruma's welfare, then..."
Even if the Thalmor find out, I'm sure Adius and the Count can stop them. / I'm sure Bruma will be fine. The Thalmor will never find out.
"They will find out. The Thalmor are many things, but they're certainly not incompetent. They operate with frightening efficiency. But I suppose you're right. Tiber Septim wouldn't have backed down and neither will we. We will fight for our faith to the last."

Should you fail to persuade Aera on taking any specific course of action, she will then dismiss you:

"Begone."

Back in Bruma, Armion is very much aware of Aera, as he reveals if you attempt to report them:

"Ah, yes, the merry band of cretins led by that irritating worm, Aera the Devout, correct? We've had our eyes on them for some time. They'll be dealt with. Severely. And soon."

Aera the Devout's missing amuletEdit

You can also ask her if there are any problems she's facing:

Aren't there threats to your safety up here?
"Sometimes, but nothing we can't handle. Wolves, bears, the occasional troll, that sort of thing. Though recently we've been in a bit over our heads. Bandits. You know the sort. They came through here and took my amulet of Talos. It means a lot to me. Next time you're exploring the wilds, mind keeping an eye out for it? We'll reward you as best we can within our means."
Not interested, sorry.
"Fair enough."
I'd be happy to help.
"Thank you very much! Bandits probably have it stashed in one of their hideouts."

Agreeing to help will start Aera the Devout's missing amulet. Once you've retrieved the amulet, she'll be delighted:

I have the amulet.
"Excellent. Thank you so much, stranger. Lots of memories associated with this thing. It'd be a crying shame to lose it. Here, have a bit of coin."
