Bentior

Bentior, a Breton food vendor, is the publican of The Restful Watchman, a notorious inn in Bruma's southern district, known for its underworld connections.

While he complains about his establishment's reputation, there is some foundation to it. He will ask you to convince Cerendil to drop charges against him and will provide useful information on the antiques thief during Absent Antiquity.

Bentior spends most of his days caring after the bar, only catching some sleep from 2am to 8am on the bedroll behind the counter.

He wears barkeeper clothes and a pair of matching shoes, and is armed with a steel dagger. He also carries the key to the inn and a random selection of gold, lockpicks, rings, food and drink.

DialogueEdit

When greeting you he will be quite cheerful, though further prying will see the conversation turn sour:

"The Restful Watchman. Rooms and food, that's what we do. What do you need?"
"I've got rooms, I've got food. And drinks. And a thousand elven ladies under my belt. Hahahaha."
"You here to do business?"
You get much trouble in here?
"Seems to me you're STARTING trouble, asking questions like that. This is a fine establishment. We don't pretend to be more than we are, though. Now, what can I get you?"
This place is filthy, and seems to be full of undesirables...
"Then go over to Jerall View if it suits you better. Me, I think this inn has more character than mister Stantus Fancypants's little establishment."

If you ask for any rumors he will first provide some information, before again losing his patience:

Heard any rumors?
"Alammu Nethre, Dark Elf girl, she's wanting adventurers to help with something. Not sure what."
"A little birdie told me that you're annoying me."

If you're playing as a High Elf, he will warn you:

"Don't often get Altmer here. And I see you're already making my customers nervous. Listen, you can stay, but don't poke your nose any further than it's wanted."

While bartering, he will exclaim:

"Cheap and cheerful."
"Okay. If any of it's gone off, just let me know."

Quest-Related DialogueEdit

Absent AntiquityEdit

Once you agree to help him recover the count's Akaviri artifacts, guard captain Adius Vilius will point you towards Bentior's establishment:

Have any suspects?
"Not in particular, but then again, the lowlifes of Bruma don't exactly hide themselves all that well. The... shadier tavern in town, the Restful Watchman. Full of thieves, bandits, thugs and other miscreants. Might be a decent place to start your search."

Interrogating Bentior won't be easy, however:

Heard anything about stolen Akaviri heirlooms?
"I don't tend to gossip about my patrons. Bad for business, you know. Especially when you're in my line of work..."

At this point you have a number of options to extract the information out of him:

Answer Success Fail
Just tell me. Don't want any legal complications. (Persuade) "Well, true enough." "Piss off, you little bull netch. The guard captain's tried to get me before - but he's never managed it for long. He can go suck on a spiddal stick for all I care, as can you. You don't get far in this business by obeying the law, now, do you?"
I have ways of getting information out of people like you... (Intimidate) "Um... gah, fine, fine. But keep this on the down-low." "Go on. Try."
I bet gold will change your tune... (100 gold) "A little gold always greases the wheels. I'll tell you what you want to know." "Ha! You ain't got the coin. Get out of here."

Alternatively, you can loosen his tongue with a good old punch-up:

Why don't we settle this the old-fashioned way? (Brawl)
"Really? You want to go up against ol' Bentior? Fine. Show me what you've got."

Whichever approach you choose, he will continue:

"There's this Breton guy who comes through here every now and again. Sleaziest guy I've ever seen - except for me, of course. Got a reputation to maintain, you know. Name's Atienne, or something like that. Anyway, he mentioned something to do with Akaviri trinkets while we spoke. Mentioned wanting to sell them or something. I guess he's your man."
Tell me more about Atienne.
"The guy's a thief. Hardly keeps it a secret. Sometimes I think he doesn't know the meaning of the word 'discretion.' Always talks big, about getting into big gangs, raiding with the best of them. Always going on wild guar chases to impress ringleaders into letting him run with them. Put it this way - you know those people who'll either end up rolling in septims or dying young? He's one of those types."
Where can I find this Atienne?
"Eh, I don't know. Listen, do you really think I'm going to tell you everything about my customers? That's a sure way to get run out of this business."

At this point, you can try to either persuade or intimidate him to disclose the information. Even if you pass the required Hard speech check however, he will refuse to budge:

Answer me or you'll lose more than your patrons. (Intimidate) / Don't play dumb with me, Bentior. We're both smarter than that. (Persuade)
"Not going to happen."
"Listen. You want me to tell you so badly? Make me. I'm not budging until I've been forced to. Legally. You know what I'm getting at, I assume."

Either way, you will end the conversation at a stand-off:

I'll be back... and you'll speak.
"Go on. Try."

After Adius gives you an official letter compelling him to testify, Bentior will swiftly change his tune and point you towards Capstone Cave:

I have this letter from Adius...
"What? Let me see that. Oh, damn. Fine. I'll tell you what I know. Listen. I heard the thief had some dealings with some, err... 'fellow businessmen' holed up in the Jeralls. You'd probably call 'em bandits, though. I tell you, no respect for the profession these days... Here, just so I don't have to go sit in a cell again, I'll mark it on your map. Go take it up with them. And by the Divines, leave me alone now, alright? Gah."

Convince Cerendil to drop the charges against BentiorEdit

Asking Bentior if he's ever has issues due to the Watchman will have him admit:

Do you ever run into trouble, given your tavern's... shady reputation?
"Well, honestly, sometimes, I do. I'm only saying this because I suspect you might be able to help me out. You see, there's this snooty Altmer that came through here a few days back. One of those haughty Alinor types. Newcomer to Bruma. Well, he came here, not realizing that the Jerall View would have been... more to his tastes. After he witnessed a few of our, oh, you know, morally gray activities and an exceptional display of promiscuity, well... he decided to leave. Now, in his outrage and disgust, he's planning to try press charges against my tavern. If you could just talk him down, I'd appreciate it."
Why, exactly, should I help you?
"Because I can pay you, and I'm just too charming to resist. Why wouldn't you help me?"
Not my thing, sorry.
"Fair enough."
I'll do it.
"Great. He's probably storming around town right now, trying to rabble-rouse against the Watchman. Put a stop to it."

Agreeing to help will start Convince Cerendil to drop the charges against Bentior. When bumping into Celendil, he will give his side of the story:

"Damnable tavern! Damnable owner! How dare he allow that lizard to engage in such a salacious display? Scandalous!"
What's your problem with the Restful Watchman?
"It's a dingy squat filled with criminals, rats and lice. The amount of underhanded deals and crooked business that goes on there... it beggars belief. I want its proprietor to land in hot water with our dear guard captain. He deserves it, no? I want its proprietor to land in hot water with our dear guard captain. He deserves it, no? Say, would you help me with that?"

After you've had the guard captain listen to the memory-gem and refuse to press charges, you can return to a delighted Bentior for your reward:

Cerendil has left. No charges can be brought against you.
"Ah, that's good to hear. Thank you. Here, take a little bit of coin on the house. Oh, and have this. It's a leftover memory-gem that one of the guys took out of the elf's pocket while he was passed out on the floor. Might fetch a decent sum."

ConversationsEdit

You may overhear an exchange between guard captain Adius Vilius and Thalmor Justiciar Armion regarding Bentior:

Armion: "I don't trust the Restful Watchman or her owner. Too many suspicious characters there. I want you to conduct a search of the premises for evidence of Talos worship."
Adius: "Don't worry, a search was conducted just last week. On heavier grounds than suspicion, I might add. We didn't find anything - well, nothing related to Talos worship, at the least. So consider that a burden lifted."

BugsEdit

  • Bentior was meant to have a number of conversations with Serulius the Stagnant, but as the beggar never visits the inn, you will never hear them. ?
Bentior "No, Serulius. I can't have you in here."
Serulius "What?! Why?"
Bentior: "Maybe because the last time you came in here you drank half my stock of ale, threw it up, and then passed out across the bar!"
Serulius: "But I-"
Bentior: "You got into a bar fight yesterday! With an imaginary person! You broke four chairs basically fighting with yourself!"
Serulius: "To be fair, I had eaten some suspicious mushrooms that day. And-"
Bentior: "Just last week you got so drunk you kept hitting on me and calling me sweetheart!"
Serulius: "Well, Bentior, not to offend you or anythin', but you do kinda look like a woman."
Bentior: "I... I..."
Serulius: "Sweetheart, I'm sure we can work this out-"
Bentior: "You stole my sign!"
Serulius: "But-"
Bentior: "No! I've had the last of you, beggar. Get out, or I'll have someone escort you out."

Bentior is also blackmailing Stenar Ceno with the knowledge of the latter's Talos worship, but again, as Stenar never visits the Watchman, you'll never hear this exchange:

Stenar: "Here. This is what I've made thus far. Are you satisfied?"
Bentior: "Stenar, Stenar, Stenar... This doesn't even begin to cover my silence."
Stenar: "Bentior, you can't--"
Bentior:"Ah, ah, my friend. Better watch that temper of yours. You wouldn't want me to go blabbing to that Thalmor freak about your little secret, now would you?"
Stenar: "...No."
Bentior "That's what I thought. Now, I expect I'll be seeing you again next week, yes?"
Stenar: "You...you're a bastard, you know that?"
Bentior "Hey now. Times are tough, pal. I'm just taking advantage of every...opportunity. Now move along. I got customers."
