He was the heir of the Phyllocid Dynasty and the younger brother of Queen Maraya and Duchess Lakana.[1][2] He was instrumental in the fall of the Withered Hand.[3]
HistoryEdit
Early LifeEdit
Nonetheless, his Royal Majesty's ever-glorious descendancy is assured in the persons of his eldest daughter Maraya, the Jewel of Satakalaam, his second-daughter Lakana, the Star of the Almandine, and the young Crown Prince Azah, the Lion of Antiphyllos."
—The Royal Lineage of Sentinel[1]
Little is known of Azah's early years. He was the youngest child of Fahara'jad and Za-Rifah, and his mother tragically died during childbirth.[1] According to some, when Prince Azah was a child, he would use different spoons to taste each bowl of soup on the table before choosing one.[4] According to his father Azah was a bright young man.[5] He was trained by General Thoda, his father's chief military advisor, alongside Uwafa and Alasan, who were respected sons of Suturah, one of the royal viziers. However, Azah was not fond of the brothers, and the general himself admitted that they had callous tendencies and no interest in swordplay.[6][3] Since then, Suturah was revealed to be a necromancer and fought against Azah's father, ultimately being defeated.[5]
Withered Hand CrisisEdit
—King Fahara'jad[5]
On behalf of his father, Azah, took on the responsibility of investigating the activities of the Withered Hand, a group of necromancers, led by Uwafa and Alasan. They were responsible for much trouble within the region of the Alik'r Desert.[5] His father sought to assist his son's investigation within the city of Sentinel and ordered an agent of the Daggerfall Covenant to help him.[5][7] Following the advice of General Thoda, the agent sought Prince Azah at his seraglio by the north wall, where he was meeting with his informants.[6] Although the place was officially reserved for the royal family and their consorts,[8] Azah was not interested in the women he surrounded himself with in a romantic way. Instead, he was building an intelligence network.[6] The agent found two of Prince Azah's informants, Ilmaha at-Amil and Roheebah.[9][10] They testified that they and the prince were under attack, and that the prince was taken captive by the attackers,[9] who employed necromancy to defeat the royal guards.[11] The undead attacked the docks of the city, and the prince was abducted to the tunnels below the city. Ultimately, he was found and rescued by the agent.[7][3]
Ultimately, it was just a distraction—the necromancer brothers instead sought to reach the Impervious Vault to steal the Ansei Wards and become an immensely powerful threat. Azah was aware of this and uncovered that they had been working on this plan for years. The vault was indeed impervious and protectd with powerful magic, but not from underneath the ground, so they tried to reach it through the tunnels they had been building. Azah wasn't certain if they could be stopped, but he insisted on trying. He knew they should get back to the palace and inform his father. While the agent went to speak with the king, Prince Azah coordinated efforts to warn the guards about the Impervious Vault.[3][12] Despite their actions, and the assistance of an allied mage from the Covenant and the Mages Guild, Gabrielle Benele, the wards were stolen.[5][12] As the necromancer threat grew far more serious with the wards stolen, the king resorted to seeking the help of the Ash'abah and intended to contact them.[5] Prince Azah had advised him to listen to the Ash'abah weeks ago, back when they offered their help, but he didn't follow this afvice at first. While the agent was sent to Marimah, their leader, to arrange cooperation, Prince Azah sought to reach out to his own Ash'abah contacts as well.[3][13]
While the agent assisted the Redguards with their troubles, leading to the death of Uwafa and the restoration of one of the wards, among other achievements, Prince Azah sought to meet the agent afterward at Tava's Blessing to search for the second Ansei Ward. He needed the agent's cooperation, as the Withered Hand was also present there.[3][14] Prince Azah and his men ware barricaded in the warehouse at the eastern edge of town. He worked alongside Talia at-Marimah of the Ash'abah, daughter of Marimah, the late leader of the group.[15]
After the death of his brother, Alasan sought to become a lich. He has corrupted one of the Ansei Wards, and was trying to channel energy from the dead for his ritual. Azah intended to stop him. He had been sent there by his father, who feared that the Withered Hand might target their navy. They arrived for other reasons as well—this was the home of one of the Ansei, who had sacrificed themselves to create the Wards, making it an important place for the ritual.[3] Ultimately, the ritual was stopped, and the agent entrusted the second Ansei Ward to the prince, following the request of the Ansei Maja's spirit. Azah promised to protect the ward and sent word to his father.[3][16] Maja also revealed that there was a third sibling—a sister of Uwafa and Alasan—who was still a threat, as she owned the last ward.[17]
Talia and Azah, along with Throne Keeper Farvad and several of the prince's guards, focused on stopping the Withered Hand from raising the consecrated dead in the Motalion Necropolis, while the agent was occupied with the Imperial invasion of Satakalaam. Unfortunately, they were overwhelmed, and Azah was captured by the forces of the Withered Hand. He was ultimately rescued by the agent, but all the wards were taken again by the necromancers.[3][15]
In their search for the final Ward, it was discovered that Shiri,[3] the researcher who had been helping the Ash'abah,[18][19] was actually the sister of Uwafa and Alasan. Azah met her when she was a very young child, but he struggled to recall much of what happened during their childhood.[3] Shiri was a powerful necromancer in her own right, and she fled to the Motalion Necropolis north of Satakalaam to continue the Withered Hand's scheme. Azah and his allies managed to uncover that she was attempting to raise the remains of her father, Suturah.[3][20] It is unclear whether Azah faced Shiri directly in the end, but he contributed to her downfall. As she was about to die, she sacrificed herself to raise her father, Suturah, as a lich. Ultimately, Suturah was defeated, and the final Ward was recovered.[3][20] He was later present at the ceremony for the restoration of the Ansei Wards in the Impervious Vault.[3][21]
