Emperor Cassynder Septim (sometimes stylized as Cassynder I)[1] was the fourteenth emperor of the Septim Dynasty. He was preceded as emperor by his mother, Katariah, and was succeeded by his younger brother, Uriel IV.[2]

BiographyEdit

Cassynder Septim was born around the year 3E 150 and was the only child of Emperor Pelagius III and Empress Katariah.[3][2] Katariah became pregnant with him after she visited Pelagius' cell, who had been committed to an asylum due to his madness.[3][2] Cassynder was the older half-brother of Uriel Lariat.[2][1] At some point, Cassynder was crowned the King of Wayrest, but by 3E 193, he was in poor health, so he abdicated the rule of Wayrest to Uriel, whom Cassynder had legally adopted.[2][1]

In 3E 200, his mother, Katariah, was killed in a skirmish in Black Marsh; thus, Cassynder was crowned the Emperor of Tamriel, but he still remained in poor health.[4][3][2] As the son of a Breton and a Dunmer, Cassynder was half-elven, but he aged like a Breton, so by the time he ascended to the throne, he was already middle-aged.[2] Nevertheless, as the only true blood relation of Pelagius III, and thus Tiber Septim, he was obliged to accept the Ruby Throne.[2] The Elder Council assumed much responsibility during Cassynder's reign.[1] Cassynder's reign was short-lived, as he died only two years after ascending to the throne in 3E 202,[nb 1] and he was succeeded by his brother, who was crowned Emperor Uriel Septim IV.[2][1][4]

By the Fourth Era, a haunted fort near the town of Rivercrest bore his name.[5][6]

NotesEdit

  • ^  Brief History of the Empire makes two contradictory statements regarding Cassynder's year of death. First, it says that "in two years, [after his reign began] he was dead"; In the next volume, however, it contradicts itself by saying that Cassynder died "three years after [his accession]". It is likely that the second statement is incorrect, as The Third Era Timeline lists Cassynder's death as occurring in 3E 202, which is two years after he became emperor.
