Soul Reaper in the Earth Forge

Soul Reapers are devices created by the resurgent Worm Cult which have recently been appearing around Tamriel. They use a combination of Necromancy and Soul Magic to detect when a mortal dies near one, and then captures and transports their soul to a secure location.

The first recorded encounter with a soul reaper was during the Worm Cult's attack on the Rivenspire Mages Guild sanctum. Afterwards, the Worm Cult's attacks began in earnest and soul reapers along with cultist and daedra reinforcements—can now be randomly encountered in many parts of Tamriel.

A Guild in CrisisEdit

While helping Prince Azah search for Guildmaster Merric at-Aswala, you eventually track the Guildmaster to the Underground Sanctum beneath the Rivenspire Mages Guildhall. When you arrive, the place is under attack by the Worm Cult, and the survivors will inform you that Guildmaster Merric is further inside.

You and Prince Azah catch up to Merric but can only watch from across a chasm as he is attacked by Mezamma:

Prince Azah: "Look, across the chasm! Guildmaster Merric! The Worm Cult has him!"
<Prince Azah runs to the ledge and watches Mezamma drains Guildmaster Merric's essence.>
Prince Azah: "Let my mentor go, foul creature!"
<Guildmaster Merric breaks free, killing one cultist and throwing the other at Mezamma, before running towards the Soul Reaper.>
Mezamma: "Stop, mortal! The soul reaper is not yet stable!"
<Guildmaster Merric bashes the Soul Reaper device, and it is destroyed, but Merric is thrown back by the explosion.>
Prince Azah: "Merric! No!"
Prince Azah: "That explosion. Stendarr preserve him, Merric was caught in the blast!"
<Mezamma opens a portal.>
Mezamma: "A dead mortal's appearance is no good to me. Come. We're done here."
Worm Cultist: "As you wish, Mezamma."
<The surviving Worm Cultist gets up from the ground and follows Mezamma through the portal.>
Prince Azah: "No, Merric can't be dead. We need to reach him!"

When you reach the spot, you can examine the ruins of the device, and Gabrielle Benele advises it will be studied.

Justice for the FallenEdit

While assisting Vanus Galerion in searching the Worm Cult Nest, one of your goals will be to find out more information about the soul reapers. Eventually you and Vanus will come across some Mages Guild captives and witness a soul reaper in action:

Vanus Galerion: "Look, past the gate. Captives from the Mages Guild."
<On the other side, you will see a captive surrounded by Worm Cultists.>
Worm Cult Shade Sentinel: "Resist if you want. We take your soul either way."
<The mage is then killed and their soul is sucked into the nearby Soul Reaper, the cultists then teleport away.>
Vanus Galerion: "The device siphoned their souls! A horrid death. We must destroy that soul reaper."

After reading a nearby journal, you learn how to safely disable a soul reaper and do so. Further into the ruin, you discover an entire hall filled with soul reapers.

Later on, while defending the Earth Forge, you find the Worm Cult has deployed the soul reapers in force, and you have the option of destroying them when you find them. You can also see a deactivated soul reaper on Stirk when trying to get the alliances' support in fighting the Worm Cult.

For more information, see the help files, the style guide, and this article's talk page.

A soul reaper random encounter begins the same, with a Fighters Guild Defender or Mages Guild Initiate escorting a Commoner. One of them will sense a disturbance and then a Soul Reaper appears out of a rift, along with Worm Cultists and Daedra. If you delay too long, then the commoner and guild member will be slain.

There will be three waves of enemies (including the initial ones), and once they have been defeated, you can destroy the soul reaper device. Sometimes during these fights, champion members of the Worm Cult can appear, as seen in the below table. Once they are killed, they may drop a Harvested Soul Fragment. Collecting and using 10 of these completes the Skill Stylist: Soul Trap achievement and unlocks the Soul Trap, Carmine Red skill style.
