Detailed WalkthroughEdit

Starting

Talk to Hofmund about jobs, after striking a deal with Disela. Despite taking the heat off of his gang with your past actions, he says Servas and Disela are no less vigilant. He claims he's willing to join up with the guild, but he wants to see what a member is capable of. To this end, he sends you to break into Tel Gilan's vault and bring something back.

Finding the Vault

Tel Gilan is right next to Helnim, just a short walk east away. To get to the vault, enter the services tower and head downstairs until you eventually find the council chambers. From there, head to the western-most room, which has the entrance to the vault.

Breaking In

The vault is secured behind a level 90 lock, and has a Telvanni guard standing watch. Be prepared to either taunt the guard and eliminate him, or use stealth to avoid detection. There aren't any potential blind spots, but there's enough room around the guard to make him turn around and not face the door. This should be standard procedure by now, as you had to raid the Zafirbel Bay Company's vault in a previous quest under similar circumstances. The difference is that there is seemingly no key to the vault, only a key to the eggmine on a shelf in the council chambers.

Keep in mind that the bounty incurred for lockpicking or casting open on a locked door is of only 5 gold. A bold or stubborn player may simply unlock the door (or make several attempts) and either pay off the miniscule bounty, or leave through the door where the guard cannot reach them if they succeed on their attempt.

Familiar Faces

Once you're inside, you'll find two Flame Atronachs guarding the vault. Dispatch them or sneak past them. Among the assorted gems, potions and coins, the vault contains some notable treasures. These include an Ebony Open Helm, Ebony Left Pauldron, Glass Wakizashi, Ebony War Axe, Glass Staff of War, Indoril Cuirass, Chuzei Bonemold Greaves, and a Glass Tower Shield out in the open. In the level 75 chest on the ground floor, you'll find two randomly chosen ebony weapons (possibly none at all, so you may wish to save before opening), and some enchanted items in the locked chest on the upper level. This level also has some gold and silver ingots, pieces of ebony, and assorted valuables.

Regardless of what you choose to take here, you'll be stopped at the exit by Caedan Jorval, who is accompanied by former ZBC associates of his; Kerlag Mist-Foot and Neval. He'll threaten to kill you and collect a reward from the Telvanni lord for protecting his vault.

Kerlag will start by summoning a Greater Bonewalker, while Caedan wields a Glass Flameblade and Neval wields a Steel Flamescythe. Prepare for a tough fight if you don't use the elevation to your advantage. You may also choose to use magic or stealth to evade them, as it's not at all necessary to fight in order to complete the quest. Of note, Caedan has a ZBC Vault key on his person, assuming you didn't steal it off of him previously.

Successful Recruitment

Once you've done the deed, return to Hofmund and talk to him about Tel Gilan. He'll state that he's quite impressed with your performance, and will let you know that his gang will join the Thieves Guild. He'll remind you that you should let your friends at the Thieves Guild know about this.

Return to Firewatch, and go to the Thieves Guild hideout at The Howling Noose. Talk to Silniel about the gang of thieves to let her know of your success, and she'll reward you with 2000 septims as a recruitment bonus.

NotesEdit

  • You don't need to take anything from the vault or fight Caedan. Getting deep enough into the vault and getting out by any means is enough to satisfy that stage of the quest.
