King Morimath,[1] also known as the King of Miscarcand[2] or the Miscarcand Lich,[3] was the last king of the Ayleid city-state of Miscarcand[1] and an infamous lich.[4]

HistoryEdit

At its height, Miscarcand was one of the most powerful city-states in the western Ayleid Empire. Miscarcand recognized Alessia as Empress following the Alessian Slave Rebellion, and it was powerful enough to defend itself from the Alessian Order following her death. However, the Ayleids of Miscarcand began to depart Cyrodiil in small bands, fleeing across the Strid River to nearby Valenwood. In time, King Morimath was the last Ayleid left at Miscarcand.[1]

Morimath ultimately achieved a state of lichdom, passing into undeath.[2] He continued to walk the ruined halls of his former kingdom, guarding the Great Welkynd Stone of Miscarcand.[4] Miscarcand was gradually buried beneath the earth, and its location was forgotten.[1]

Miscarcand's location was rediscovered circa 2E 582. Nantharion of Silvenar had led a group of Bosmer to the newly-grown Dawnwood, where he founded the city of Vashabar and proclaimed himself king. However, King Nantharion was secretly the leader of the Recollection, a cult dedicated to the Daedric Prince Ithelia. In truth, the Recollection were responsible for the growth of the Dawnwood, and Nantharion had founded Vashabar atop the forgotten ruins of Miscarcand. When he was exposed, Nantharion brought Ithelia to Vashabar, allowing her to open an entrance to Miscarcand and reclaim her divine power.[5]

Although the legend of Miscarcand was famous among adventurers prior to its rediscovery,[1] it eventually developed a sinister reputation due to the danger posed by Morimath's lich. It was said that Miscarcand was haunted by the vengeful spirit of its last king. Although every Ayleid city once possessed a Great Welkynd Stone, the majority of these stones were thought to have been looted from the Ayleid ruins of Cyrodiil by the late Third Era. By 3E 433, Miscarcand was the exception; it was rumored that its Great Stone still shone in the deep darkness of its ruined halls, protected by the king's ghost. For this reason, Martin Septim tasked the Hero of Kvatch with entering Miscarcand to recover its stone when he required one to open a portal to Gaiar Alata during the Oblivion Crisis.[4] At that time, the undead guardians of Miscarcand were beseiged by the Bitterfish Tribe of Goblins, who were attempting to colonize the ruins.[6] The Hero succeeded in reaching the Great Stone but was attacked by Morimath and his undead guardians, resulting in the lich's destruction.[7] Morimath's defeat was seen by the spirits of Miscarcand as proof that the Hero was worthy to claim the stone.[8]

NotesEdit

  • The subterranean hall containing the Great Stone of Miscarcand was also named 'Morimath'. In Ayleidoon, it translates to Darkened Home.[6]
