Fathis Ules

Fathis Ules is a Dark Elf fence based in the Elven Gardens District of the Imperial City. Because of his affiliation with the Thieves Guild, he will only offer you his services once you have been promoted to the rank of Master Thief upon completion of the Arrow of Extrication quest. With 1500 gold Fathis has the most gold of any merchant in the game but due to his mastery of Mercantile, he pushes extremely hard bargains.

Being one of the highest ranking operatives in the Imperial City as well as the guild's best fence means Fathis travels around the great city constantly, supposedly to avoid unwanted attention and/or to seek out potential sellers and new members. True to his profession, he spends most of the night out and only goes to bed at 5am, sleeping in the double bed on the second floor of Dul gro-Shug's House. After waking up at 11am, he sets off for a two-hour brunch at the nearby King and Queen Tavern. Once he's full, he heads for either the Arboretum (on Tirdas and Turdas) or the Market District (all other days), where he will be found wandering around until 5pm; at which point he makes for the Tiber Septim Hotel to enjoy a luxurious dinner. He leaves at 7pm and heads back to the Elven Gardens District, spending all the night until 5am sitting on the chest behind his house. On Sundas, he will visit the Temple of the One between 7pm and 11pm. Once you become the Gray Fox, he will spend his nights at Dareloth's House along with his fellow guildmates. Fathis was also intended to play a role in the unfinished Imperial Couriers quest; at midday on the 18th of each month, as long as Wilbur is still alive, he will head to the Black Horse Courier and stay there for a brief moment before he resumes his usual schedule.

He will offer his illegal bartering services at all times, provided you have fenced enough stolen goods and rank as Master Thief. Like most other fences he will try to remain as discreet as possible and will not offer you his services while traveling from one place to another. A number of bugs will prevent Fathis from bartering with you at specific times, specifically when he spends time in Dareloth's house between 7pm and 5am and when sleeping in Dul gro-Shug's house between 5am and 11am. Also, after you have completed Sins of the Father, it is impossible to barter with Fathis ever again. See the bugs section for details.

Being a high-ranking fence and Thieves Guild operative is certainly lucrative, and Fathis enjoys an upper-class wardrobe: a black & burgundy outfit and a pair of gold trimmed shoes. He also possesses a green silk garment which he never wears. He carries his house key as well as a small amount of gold. In combat he relies on a steel dagger. If you choose to give him the Honorblade of Chorrol during the related quest, he will keep it on his person henceforth.

DialogueEdit

If you enter conversation with Fathis before having joined the Guild, he will politely introduce himself and never even mention his services or his connections with the Thieves Guild:

"Fathis Ules. I've got a nice house. I have a little income... quite comfortable. Time is light on my hands."
Imperial City
"It is a beautiful city. I love to walk, talk with everyone, hear the news, share the little stories of the day."

As with the other four fences, he will deny dealing in stolen goods if you try to trade with him:

"I don't know what you are talking about. I don't buy or sell things."

Quest-Related EventsEdit

Independent ThieveryEdit

After you have joined the Guild, his greeting will change considerably:

"Ah, yes. A guild brother in search of a fence?"

He will, however reject you his bartering services if you do not have the rank he desires:

"My services are not for such as you. Go peddle your paltry wares to Ongar in Bruma, or one of the other lesser fences."

If you've completed Taking Care of Lex and ask Orrin Where can I find a fence?, he will be annoyed:

"What, I'm not good enough for you? You think Fathis is going to give you the time of day? I'm just as good as he is. Show me your stuff. I can move anything."

Once you have completed the Arrow of Extrication quest, doyens S'Krivva and Armand Christophe will tell you:

Fathis Ules the Fence.
"He is the best fence in the Thieves Guild. He operates from the Elven Gardens in the Imperial City."
"He is the best fence in the Thieves Guild. He spends time in the guild hall, and in the Elven Gardens." (on completion of The Ultimate Heist quest)

You can then bribe local beggars for information on his whereabouts:

"Bless you! Fathis Ules lives in the middle of the Elven Gardens district."

At this point, he will compliment your skills when asked about where to find a fence:

"Right here. I'm the best in the business. You've gained quite a reputation in the guild. Let's see what you've got to sell me."

When you begin your dealings with him, he will ask:

"How may I help a guild brother?"

If his disposition toward you is greater than 70, he will show some more enthusiasm:

"I am eager to peruse your haul."

As you are negotiating with the masterful merchant, he will have some unique comments about the dealings:

Buy an item: "It is an honor to bargain with a thief of your reputation."
Sell an item: "Why must I be such a soft touch?"
Offer refused: "You've priced yourself out of a deal. Care to make a counter-offer?"

He will end the transaction by providing you with a reminder: "Don't forget, only I can fence the most difficult items."

Sins of the FatherEdit

Once you've completed the Legacy Lost quest, Fathis relocates to The Oak and Crosier inn in Chorrol. For the next two days, he will be found wandering around the inn, stopping to eat dinner between 8pm and 11pm. Imperial and Breton citizens will start to remark on Fathis's appearance, provided their Disposition is above 60:

Chorrol
"Did you hear about Reynald Jemane's long lost twin brother returning to Chorrol? Now I hear there's a stranger in town asking about them. A Dark Elf, from back east they say. I wonder what he wants."

Other citizens will also say:

"There's some strange Dark Elf in town, asking about Reynald Jemane and his brother."

Approaching him will net you:

"Excuse me, may I have a moment of your time?"

If you decline to speak to him but return to Chorrol after two days have gone by, he will seek you out and offer you a job to retrieve a certain item:

"I may have a bit of a proposition for you involving the Jemane family you so recently assisted."
Jemane Family
"It was kind of you to escort the Jemanes back to Weatherleah. However, the original owner of Weatherleah left them an even greater legacy. In fact, there's quite a bit more to their family history than meets the eye. Want to hear about it?"
I'm not interested in your stories.
"Suit yourself. I thought you might have an interest in self-improvement, but perhaps not. Let me know if you ever change your mind."

He will then exit conversation by saying:

"You shouldn't pass on golden opportunities."

If you return to him, he will now say:

"You have decided you have time to listen to my tale after all? It is a good one. I promise you won't be disappointed."
Sure, I'll listen.
"Excellent. Curiosity should never be denied, is it not so? And who knows, my story may prove profitable to both of us once it has come to its end. My tale actually begins with the father, Albert Jemane. He was once in my employ, or should I say the employ of my organization. He was very good at obtaining things from people who did not want to part with. A professional thief, to put it bluntly. He was assigned to obtain a very valuable item for me. He succeeded, but decided to keep this item for himself. An unfortunate decision. He fled from Chorrol with his family, and was never heard from again. Only his small son Reynald was found, wandering alone in the wilderness. Naturally, my associates and I believed he had perished. The wilderness is, after all, a dangerous place. No place to take your family. Then, these many years later, voila! The brother reappears. It seems the rest of the family did not die in the wilderness after all."
What do you want me to do?
"Indeed. What is the point of my tale? Albert Jemane builds Weatherleah way out in the middle of nowhere. He was a thief, not a farmer. The only reason to establish such a place would be to stay out of the Chorrol Guard's sight. I believe that the item Albert stole, which rightly belongs to me, was hidden at the Weatherleah settlement. Unfortunately, the notorious Redguard Valley Ogres ransacked the place and probably took all of the loot back with them. If you were to obtain this item, somehow, and bring it to me, I would pay you very well for it. I can get you started by telling you where the Ogres live. The rest is up to you."

He will say his goodbyes with a warning:

"Beware. The Redguard Valley Ogres are not known for their... hospitality."

After this, you will be able to ask him about the Jemanes' father and the item (though he won't be too forthcoming) as well as about the brothers, although approaching him will annoy him:

"Why are you still here?"
Albert Jemane
"There isn't much to tell you about Albert Jemane. He was one of my best, then he got greedy. The rest is history."
Stolen Item
"I do not care to describe it. You will know it when you see it, I think. It is not something one of the ogres should have in his possession."
Jemane Family
"Guilbert and Reynald know nothing of their father's past deeds. If you want to tell them about it, suit yourself."

After this, Fathis will drink all day long from 9am to 9pm, causing the townsfolk to remark:

Fathis Ules
"One of the Gray Fox's top bosses, they say. Spends all day drinking at the Oak and Crosier, but he's been asking questions about the Jemanes."

At 9pm, he will get out of his chair, pick up some food and sit down again, eating until midnight. He then wanders around the inn all night long.

Once you've retrieved the blade, he will greet you with:

"You're back. I trust everything went as planned?"
"So... what have you brought me?"
Stolen Item
"You have it? Let me see it!"
Never mind.
"Then why do you waste my time? Begone, I have no more patience for you today."

He will angrily end conversation with:

"Either you have it, or you don't. Don't play games with me."

If you do give him the stolen sword, he will be delighted:

[Hand over the sword]
"Yes, yes! This is indeed the Honorblade of Chorrol, finally delivered back to us after all these years! So this tale has a happy ending after all, at least for you. Money cannot buy happiness, they say, but we know better."

If you greet him again after having given him the sword he will simply say:

"What?"
"Our business is done."
"Our transaction is complete. I trust you'll keep this between us, yes?"

If you instead returned the sword to steward Laythe Wavrick, he will spit:

"There's nothing else to say."
"You've made your choice... now leave me be."
"Good deeds and moral fiber. Bah!"

BugsEdit

  • Even after completion of Sins of the Father, Fathis will remain permanently essential.
  • Fathis should have slept at The Oak and Crosier between midnight and 9am while Sins of the Father is active, but because no beds are available, he ends up wandering around the taproom all night long.
  • Fathis sleeps in Dul gro-Shug's house due to a design flaw. He clearly should have been marked to sleep in his own house, but Dul gro-Shug's house is right above it in the Construction Set and the wrong cell was chosen. This mistake will make life much harder for Fathis; he doesn't have the key to Dul's house, and will have to wait from 5am to 6am in front of the door until Dul unlocks it. When he is finally inside the house, Fathis will end up waiting outside the locked Private Quarters instead of sleeping. Also, in the evenings, depending on how you use the fast-travel and wait features, Fathis can often be found locked inside Dul's house. This is due to the logic used by the game engine which ignores locked doors in some instances and places him in Dul's house with no way to get out.
    • Unlocking the door to Dul gro-Shug's house will allow Fathis to leave as scripted.
  • Fathis will not offer his services inside Dareloth's house because he's leashed to the upstairs door (with a range that easily covers the entire house).
  • After Sins of the Father is completed, Fathis stays in Chorrol for the rest of the game due to a poorly-designed AI schedule that prioritizes staying in Chorrol even after the quest has finished.
  • Whichever option you choose to finish Sins of the Father, once the quest is completed you will be unable to barter with Fathis.
  • There are a number of bugs in Fathis' schedule, leading to him only offering services at the times listed above.
