Faction(s) Black Horse Couriers

Ahmat was a Redguard member of the Black Horse Couriers. He and his assistant Talaya prepared racecourses for prospective jockeys to ride through on horseback. He was an integral part of the scrapped Horse Racing feature.

DialogueEdit

If approached before joining the Black Horse Couriers:

"It takes both skill and good fortune to enter the ranks of the Black Horse Couriers!"

As you approached, he would say:

"Anytime is a good time for a ride, is it not?"

Ahmat would introduce himself if you approached him without having ever run a horse race:

"My friend. I am Ahmat of the Black Horse Couriers. My assistant Talaya and I have prepared a riding challenge—a winding course across dangerous terrain—and a prize for the fastest rider."
(?)
"Call me Ahmat. I represent the illustrious Black Horse Couriers. When kings, queens, and generals of Tamriel need urgent messages conveyed across deadly fields of battle, they turn to us."
I'd like to know more about the race.
"I'm happy to tell you whatever you want to know. The rules are also printed on our handbill."
What are the rules?
"My assistant Talaya has gone to great pains to mark the course you must follow. The course crosses dangerous terrain and cuts through enemy encampments.
Talaya is waiting for you at the end, to record your time."
Why is the course so dangerous?
"Anyone can ride a horse at high speed on a gently winding country road! But the Black Horse Couriers specialize in delivering vital missives across dangerous battlefields!"
Is there some kind of prize for completing the course?
"What a prize! For the rider who completes every course—braving untold danger through sheer skill, speed, and grace—we are offering a chance to join our number and to ride one Black Horse Couriers' specially-bred black coursers."
What sorts of things can I do as a Black Horse Courier?
"Our services are always required—across Tamriel and beyond. Some of our number have even ventured to other planes at the behest of kings and demigods!"
How does one join the Black Horse Couriers?
"How excellent of you to ask. It so happens that certain well-connected interests in Tamriel have pooled their resources to sponsor these races and to award the winner with the opportunity to join our ranks."
Who are these well-connected interests?
"For various reasons, they would prefer to remain anonymous. But they include merchant princes, great warriors, and even kings.
They are united in a single goal: to identify the best horsemen and women in Tamriel."

Speaking to him before letting him know you're ready to start:

"Let me know when you are ready, and the race will begin."
(?)
"Good! What are you waiting for? Get going! Follow the markers until you reach the end."

If you talk to him after the race has begun:

"What are you talking to me for? You have a course to run. Follow the markers until you reach the end! Talaya will record your time when you're done."

Speaking to him after returning from a course:

"Good work. Talk to my assistant Talaya, so she can record your time."

If you fail to complete a course:

"Hm. It seems you did not complete the course. That's no reason to give up, however! Would you like to try again?"

Alik'r DesertEdit

"It's good to see you again. Talaya has really outdone herself this time.
Riding in the desert presents special challenges, you know. The sand in your face, biting at your skin. Are you interested in riding our course?"
(?)
"Aha! This one is dear to my heart. It runs past my childhood home, over dunes and crags.
It recalls how the galloping steeds of the Ra Gada charged across the sands in their conquest of Hammerfell!"
How challenging is this course?
"Talaya assures me this course is neither too easy, nor too difficult. It is not for the beginner, but the master horseman should have no trouble at all!"
I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"Like a Ra Gada cavalryman. Like the very vision of a Ra Gada cavalryman!
Talaya will be mad that you bested her course, but no matter. Splendid riding!"
'
'

AuridonEdit

"Ah! So we meet again! And this time, here in fair Auridon.
They say Queen Ayrenn has an adventurous spirit, so we have designed a special course in her honor. If she passes by, I will invite her to try it."
(?)
"Certainly! This course will offer you the opportunity to see many wondrous things.
From shining seas to ancient Ayleid ruins, you will see all this island has to offer. Be wary though, as beautiful as the landscape may be, it is also dangerous."
How challenging is this course?
"That depends on you. Talaya says it is not the easiest course she has designed, but nor is it the most difficult.
For you, I think it might a good challenge, but if you can think quickly in the saddle, you'll make short work of it."

After finishing the course:

"You made it look easy, didn't you?
I suspect Queen Ayrenn will find it difficult to best your time, but hopefully, she will at least be open to the challenge."
'
'

ColdharbourEdit

"Your skill on horseback is truly unmatched.
In this dark place, you are a source of light—an inspiration to us all and a reminder of the strength we are capable of, even here in Coldharbour."
"It is dark place in which we meet today, my friend. I am sorry that you are here. I am sorry that I am here.
But if we are going to be stuck here, then we shall at least have a riding course!"
(?)
"When the first soul-shriven were brought here, the servants of Molag Bal had not yet constructed enough prison cells.
Cadwell says that instead they were forced to march—incessantly—down this path. Such suffering … so we ride in their memory."
How challenging is this course?
"It is more challenging than any course you find back on Nirn. If are truly trapped in this plane of Oblivion, then we have nothing to lose.
This course is very, very dangerous."
All right. I'll run the course then.

After finishing the course:

EastmarchEdit

"Ah! Praise Ruptga! You are just the one I was hoping to see!
You would not believe it! These people here have this fantastic contest called "The Konunleikar", but they have no horse race! Talaya and I have just built them a course."
(?)
"It is more exciting than some silly footrace around the city—I promise you that much. Yes. Talaya has really outdone herself this time.
There are only so many places worth visiting in this gods-forsaken land, but you will see all of them."
How challenging is this course?
"I suspect you will find it is not too easy, but nor is it overly difficult. Talaya has focused on customizing this course to the taste of the locals.
After all, the goal is to get the race included as part of the Konunleikar."
All right. I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"You have this day one to remember, wayfarer! You've proven the course is a good one.
Now, I just have to convince this Rigurd
[sic] the Brash to unclude [sic] the challenge as part of the Konunleikar."
'
'

GrahtwoodEdit

"It is good to see a friendly face, my friend. Everyone in these parts is so serious—even the Bosmer.
That's why we have up come with a challenge we hope will cheer everyone up. You should try it. You will enjoy it. I promise."
(?)
"It winds through the forest, following an ancient hoarvoar mating trail.
Once a year, the Bosmer used to herd the female hoarvors down the trail until they were exhausted. After that, the male hoarvors had an easier time catching them."
How challenging is this course?
"It shouldn't be too difficult. After all, hoarvors are not the most nimble of species.
I am sure Talaya has taken care to ensure there are some surprises, however."
All right. I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"You have the makings of an amazing rider. I suspect no female hoavoar [sic] ever ran the trail in such good time.
And even if they did, of course, the male hoarvoars soon had their way with them. So be grateful that you are not a female hoarvoar."
'
'

GreenshadeEdit

"It is most excellent to see you again, wayfarer. The heart of Valenwood is a wild and spooky place. It is also an excellent place for another challenge.
I think you will find this one … rather unique."
(?)
"Imperial historians say the occupation of Valenwood was the most ill-advised military decision ever made.
The Bosmer ran them in circles—quite literally. They created a devious path through the forest—and that is where are our course runs today."
How challenging is this course?
"It is not easy, to be sure, but nor is it so dangerous that you will find yourself lost at every third turn.
It may be difficult at first, but with a little determination, I am confident it can be completed in time."
All right. I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"That was an impressive ride. If you had been leading the Imperials when they sought to subdue Valenwood …. who knows?
Things might have ended much differently."
'
'

Malabal TorEdit

"Aha! I knew you would eventually come. Tell me—how much do you hate the Wood Orcs?
No. Wait. Never mind. Don't answer that. Whether you hate them or not, this course will give you the chance to strike fear into their hearts."
'
"It runs right through the Wood Orcs' territories. They like to hunt, but today, it's their turn to be hunted.
You can charge into their camps and attack, or you can try to ride through their ranks. Either way, you'll scare the Oblivion out of them."
How challenging is this course?
"Most definitely. Talaya said she was trying to design a course that would require one to be as skilled in the art of battle as in the art of horse-riding.
Have faith though. Even if you fail the first time, you can always try once more."
All right. I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"Good ride, my friend. I suspect there are some Wood Orcs out there who will wake up tonight in terror, hearing your thundering hoofbeats in their fear-ridden dreams."
'
'

Reaper's MarchEdit

"Ah. Talaya was hoping we would run into you here. These lands are native to her and she is quite confident that the course she has designed here is her best yet.
She is hoping to really give you a challenge this time."
(?)
"It follows an old Baandari trading path that is no longer safe enough for travel.
In some places, the forest seeks to reclaim the cleared spaces. Other parts have been ravaged by the Colovian invaders. It will be a wild ride."
So this is a more challenging course?
"Indeed. It will be at least as difficult, if not moreso, than any of the other courses you might have run.
Even so, I suspect you have a better chance of completing the course than most."
All right. I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"Your skill at riding is truly unmatched, wayfarer. I had doubted if even you could complete this course, but you have proven me wrong."
'
'

The RiftEdit

"Ah! Fancy seeing you in this rugged land! It is fortuitous though, as Talaya told me that she was very much hoping you would come.
She says she has created a more difficult course than the one you faced last. She is anxious to see how you fare."
(?)
"It will require your horse to be sure-footed and your mind to be sharp. Like a snake, it slithers through these rocky hills and it will bite you if you are not careful.
I'm afraid you will not see many friendly faces on this route, wayfarer."
So this is a more challenging course?
"This one? It is an easy one. Talaya assures me she has kept the path very straightforward.
You will still need to be a skilled rider, however. Would you like to give it a try?"
All right. I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"Well now. I suspect Talaya was more than a little bit frustrated to see you finish the course so easily.
This is good, though. Like you, she seems to thrive when facing a challenge."
'
'

BangkoraiEdit

"The sight of an old friend is such a comfort, is it not? The Black Horse Couriers have found a formidable rider in you.
But Bangkorai is a hazardous land. Full of rough terrain and rougher enemies."
(?)
"The Black Horse Couriers have commissioned a very special course here.
We are trying to discover a route that will more effectively warn High Rock of Reach attacks. By running this course, you will be actively helping us defend Bangkorai!"
How challenging is the course?
"Talaya tells me this is her most challenging course yet. In part, this is because the territory itself demands it.
But she has spared no ingenuity in crafting this route. Are you up for the challenge?"
I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"In my youth I heard tales of a mad Reachman who would ride the steppes. No one moved over the rugged mountains with more speed than he.
I say your performance today has given me a glimpse of his prowess!"
'
'

DeshaanEdit

"Friend. Welcome. When the Black Horse Couriers sent their humble servant to set up these challenges, this was precisely the kind of course our sponsors envisioned. I think you will be pleased."
(?)
"It took some persuading, but the Tribunal gave the Black Horse Couriers their blessing to set our course across their lands.
The fertile hills and gorges of Deshaan are truly scenic—not to mention the great city of Mournhold!"
How challenging is the course?
"She protested mightily, but I convinced my assistant, Talaya, to restrain herself. The course is designed for the accomplished beginner and hews closely to main roads."
I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"I have heard harrowing stories of plague and Daedric mischief across Deshaan. I hope that you were not too heavily impeded in your challenge."
'
'

RivenspireEdit

"Personally, if it were not the wishes of the Black Horse Couriers, I would not have gone near Rivenspire. It is a dark place.
But our sponsors want riders tested in all circumstances."
(?)
"Dark magic is at work in Rivenspire. Vampires. Daedric influence. Families torn apart.
A rider of the Black Horse Couriers will need to navigate these trials and more in the course of our great work. Are you ready?"
How challenging is the course?
"You will need to keep your wits—and your weapons—at the ready. You will need to have some skill as a rider, though Talaya has left some room for error."
I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"I heard tales of horsemen in these hills who are attuned to the spirit of the beast. I don't know if the tales are true—but I do wonder if you are not their kin."
'
'

ShadowfenEdit

"My friend, did I not tell you the Black Horse Couriers were setting up courses all across Tamriel?
Even here, in the mire of the Black Marsh, we have a challenge for you!"
(?)
"The Shadowfen is a hard place for a mount. When the 17th Imperial Cavalry tried to subdue these marshes, the Argonians waited in the marsh and struck from among the vines.
This course mimics the Imperials' frantic retreat."
How challenging is the course?
"We have designed it for neither beginner nor expert. Be prepared to defend yourself. But you should be able to complete it at a steady pace."
I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"A remarkable run. I expected the low-hanging vines of the swamps to cause some trouble, but not for you, I see!
That was a ride to rival the very best of the Black Horse Couriers!"
'
'

StonefallsEdit

"Though ash makes our eyes water, the Black Horse Couriers are not deterred from our search for the finest riders in all of Tamriel.
And so, we have another course to test your skill!"
(?)
"They say that the Akaviri invaders had never seen a horse when they set foot on Stonefalls. What a terrifying sight that must have been!
This course follows the path of several riders who set forth to announce the miracle of the Akaviri defeat."
How challenging is the course?
"This course is a good one to prepare you for a more difficult challenge. It stays close to the main roads, offering short detours into more dangerous territory."
I'll run the course.

After finishing the course:

"I thought the ash clouds might impeded your visibility, but you mastered the challenge.
Excellent. That is exactly the kind of focus the Black Horse Couriers are looking for!"
'
'

StormhavenEdit

"My friend, I will let you in on a little secret. One of our patrons—I cannot say who—is in Stormhaven even as we speak. It is truly an honor to show off this course before such an illustrious personage!"
(?)
"(?)"
(?)
"When Emeric was crowned High King, messengers rode forth from Wayrest. Our course follows in their hoofprints, so to speak."
How challenging is the course?
"I don't think you'll find it very difficult. The course mostly follows the main roads, although I'm sure my assistant Talaya has snuck some special flourishes into the route."
I'll run the course.

Returning to him after successfully completing the course:

"Excellent riding. When I think of the day Emeric was crowned, I think it is something we all dream of—the chance to ride out bearing such important news."
