Detailed WalkthroughEdit
Starting the Quest
You come across Lady Laurent and Stibbons, who appear to be looking for a group of people. Talk to Lady Laurent.
- "How splendid! Look, Stibbons, it's our friend ... the one from Glenumbra! What good fortune. I was just saying to Stibbons, "Stibbons, I do wish someone would come along who has proven their worth." And then you turned up, in answer to my summons!"
- Do you need help?
- "I'm looking for a cup. Not just any cup, mind you. A Mages Guild cup. They call it the Emerald Chalice. The Nord mage, Malofar, stole this relic. I offered my assistance and tracked Malofar here to Breagha-Fin—home to a group of Nord exiles."
- What sort of help do you need?
- "Patience! I was just getting to that. I acquired a few hirelings and sent them in to look around. They haven't returned. Now I need someone to go in there and retrieve the Emerald Chalice. And my lazy hirelings, as well, of course."
- All right. I'll go in and look around.
- "I knew I could count on you! If you find that blasted cup, you will have my eternal gratitude."
You can continue to talk to her.
-
- You seem very concerned about the relic, but what about your hirelings?
- "Of course I'm worried about my hired help, as any woman of noble birth would be. But the chalice is a priceless, irreplaceable relic of historical importance. You really can't compare the two."
You can ask her about why the chalice is special, about the hirelings, and about Malofar and why he might steal the chalice.
Searching Breagha-Fin
When you're ready, enter Breagha-Fin and fight the Hillborne Goblins. At the end of a twisting tunnel, you will find a dead body of one of Lady Laurent's hirelings with a note nearby. Read the note to find out what happened. The note also mentions a magical ice barrier surrounding the inner sanctum which needs three Nord runestones to dismiss. The runestones will have quest markers on your map.
To find the first one, continue heading west. (If you would like to learn more about the Emerald Chalice and how it turned Amberic into a Goblin, you can read Amberic's Note in a small cave on your right.) Turn south around a bend, and you will see an altar where three Goblins stand cheering. Kill them and take the Eagle Runestone.
Continue to the southernmost cavern to find the next runestone. You will find it on another altar surrounded by three more cheering Goblins. Kill them and take the Whale Runestone. (Nearby you can read Barrowton's Journal, which is lying near a skeleton. It gives more information about Breagha-Fin.)
Finally, retrace your steps north to reach the last runestone. There will be a branch of the cavern that breaks off to your left. Follow the tunnel as it curves around and climbs upward. When the path splits, head south onto a natural stone bridge. Then take the fork to the right. Again, three Goblins will be standing around an altar cheering. Kill them and collect the Snake Runestone.
Recovering the Emerald Chalice
Head back onto the bridge and a little further south to find three altars that resemble the earlier ones. Each altar has a depiction of one of the three animals. You will place each runestone on the corresponding altar by simply selecting "Place," and they can be placed in any order. When you place a runestone, a blue light will temporarily shine on it. When all three runestones have been placed on the corresponding altars, the icy barrier will disappear.
Enter the Inner Sanctum. You will find the Emerald Chalice on a large altar in the back of the cavern. Malofar is standing in front of it with two Goblins guarding him. Kill them and take the chalice. (His journal can be read in a nook to the right of the altar. It provides more details about his backstory.)
A Strange Goblin
When you exit the Inner Sanctum, you will see a Strange Goblin in Breton clothes. Speak to him to hear that he is not a Goblin but a Breton. He says he will tell you more if you follow him. While you are following him, the other Goblins will not be hostile toward you. He will lead you north, and then take a right at the split in the path to an alternate exit. Speak to him again before leaving to find out that he is one of Lady Laurent's hirelings. It turns out that anyone who drinks from the chalice is turned into a Goblin and is under the control of the chalice's owner. The Hillborne Goblins you have been fighting were once Nords betrayed by Malofar. He will also suggest you don't tell Lady Laurent about the enchantment in order to pay her back for what happened to him.
Exit Breagha-Fin and head down the path back to Lady Laurent's camp. (Note that the Strange Goblin is now named Amberic.) You have two choices when you speak to Lady Laurent. You can tell her the whole truth about the chalice's enchantment, or you can lie and say that it grants amazing powers to anyone who drinks from it.
Telling the Whole Truth
If you told Lady Laurent the truth, she will then attempt to reverse the transformation after paying you for your help:
- Stibbons: "Yes m'lady. Please try not to get any on my clothes. Blood is murder to get out."
- Lady Clarisse Laurent: "Now just hold still Stibbons …."
- <She takes some blood and puts it in the Chalice.>
- Lady Clarisse Laurent: "Now you, Goblin, drink from the chalice."
When the Goblin takes a sip, he will transform back into Amberic. However, Laurent appears to have miscalculated:
- Stibbons: "What? What's happening …?"
Stibbons will then transform into a Goblin and will walk away to sulk.
- Lady Clarisse Laurent: "Oh, dear … that was an unexpected side effect."
Speaking with her afterwards, Laurent is confident she can eventually reverse the effects on Stibbons.
- "Perhaps I shouldn't have used Stibbons' blood …. He must have gotten caught in the spell somehow. Ah well, I'm sure I can figure out a way to undo it eventually."
Amberic will be relieved:
- "Well now, that is a relief! To think I might have lived out the rest of my days that way."
Telling a Lie
If you instead lied to her ladyship, she will want to test the enchantment on Stibbons after paying you. You'll witness the following:
- Stibbons: "As you wish, m'lady."
- <Stibbons drinks from the cup>
- Stibbons: "What? What's happening …?"
- Stibbons: "What happened? No. No! I'm a Goblin!"
- Amberic: "Har! Yes … revenge!"
- Lady Clarisse Laurent: "What have you done? My manservant is a Goblin! It'll take me forever to undo this!"
Speak to Clarisse and she'll exclaim:
- "Stibbons is … Stibbons is a Goblin! Whatever am I going to do with a Goblin manservant?"
- Why did you make Stibbons drink from the cup?
- "That's what Stibbons does! And just for such situations as this, I suppose.
Well, nothing to do now but head back and see if the Mages Guild can help him. I do hope this doesn't affect his ability to make my favorite fish stew."
Amberic will remain a Goblin, but he'll be pleased you tricked Lady Laurent:
- "Yes! Happy!"
Either way, Stibbons will be turned into a Goblin, and you will receive your quest reward.

- Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
- Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
