Map of Hammerfell

Gilane is one of the eight major cities in the province of Hammerfell,[1] situated on the northern edge of the isthmus in Khefrem.[2]

Layout & GeographyEdit

Gilane is located in the southern portion of the Alik'r,[3][4] in a region where the Rourken Clan of Dwemer settled after their exodus from the east, as evident with the city's vicinity from their ancient capital, Volenfell. The southern coast of Hammerfell is also where the Forebears are more prevalent,[4] and where the Tavan wave of the Ra Gada settled after their conquest.[5] Gilane is located on the coast with a portside[6] and south of the city, on the other side of the isthmus is the Prince's Gate, the gateway to the peninsula, Hew's Bane.[7] The musk of the local Fennec Fox is turned into a perfume, which is considered very fashionable for the nobility of southern Hammerfell, including Gilane.[8] Gilane is known to export some of its goods, such as turbaned conical helmets and fine glass goblets with gilt brims.[9][10] Gilane is neighbored by several settlements, including Hegathe to the far west and Lainebon Place to the northeast.[1]

Notable LocalesEdit

  • Gilane Docks[6]
  • Gilane Palace[6]
  • Khefrem Academy of Yokudan Heritage[2]

HistoryEdit

By the late-first century of the Third Era in 3E 98, the twenty-one year old Prince Cephorus Septim I was engaged to the Queen of Gilane, Bianki,[11] and eleven years later, the two were married and had a healthy brood of children.[12][nb 1] His reign over the Kingdom was in a good place and his relationship with other kingdoms were solid at best, much like his siblings and their domains.[13]

When the War of the Red Diamond started in 3E 121, King Cephorus and the Redguards of Gilane were at the forefront of the conflict as he re-conquered western High Rock in the summer of 3E 125. Cephorus' armies were focused throughout High Rock and they eventually moved back into Hammerfell, where he confronted Uriel III's armies in Ichidag in 3E 127. Cephorus' forces overtook Uriel's armies and the King arranged his transport to Gilane before he would be put to trial in the Imperial City. But before he arrived to Gilane, an angry crowd tore through his carriage and killed him. Not long after the incident, King Cephorus was proclaimed the Emperor of Tamriel.[14][15] By 3E 136, Queen Bianki had passed away and all of her children died during the War of the Red Diamond, and four years later in 3E 140, Emperor Cephorus I had passed away after falling off a horse.[16]

During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the city-state of Gilane was an active settlement. It was ruled by King Coc and had a rivalry with Hegathe and Taneth.[6] Not much is known about Gilane during the Great War, but by 4E 172, the Aldmeri Dominion had claimed the southern coast of Hammerfell and of all the southern cities, the former capital, Hegathe was the only one still standing. When the White-Gold Concordat was signed in 4E 175, it marked the official cession of southern Hammerfell to the Thalmor, but five years later in 4E 180, the Redguards of Hammerfell retook the southern region and cities, but it was left devastated.[17]

NotesEdit

  • ^  The historical-fiction novel series, The Wolf Queen claims that Prince Cephorus married Queen Bianki and had plenty of children, but the book, The Madness of Pelagius claims that he never married nor had any children. Even though the former is considered fiction to some regard, the latter is discredited for incorrectly claiming that Pelagius III's mother is Utheilla Direnni so the extent of its validity is debatable. This claim is made by Ted Peterson, who wrote both books during development.[18]
  • Arena was originally conceived as a fighting game featuring a tournament that took the player to each of Tamriel's cities to challenge different gladiatorial teams. According to a file from that stage of development left behind in the final game, Gilane's gladiatorial team would have been called "the Dire Wolves".[UOL 1]
