Poison Cloak Effect Patched?Edit

It may be worth noting that as of at least patch 1.6, the Ebony Mail's "poison cloak" affects enemies normally immune to poison, such as draugr. tested on 360. — Unsigned comment by 66.160.240.20 (talk) at 09:56 on 22 July 2012

how much is the muffling effect?Edit

Does the muffle effect completely silence you or is it only 50%? — Unsigned comment by 81.82.67.179 (talk) at 14:09 on 24 March 2013

The effect is 1pt, which I believe translates to 100% effectiveness. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 14:15, 24 March 2013 (GMT)
According to Skyrim:Muffle (effect), yes. Sidenote, technical information on what the enchantment does needs to be added to the article. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 14:22, 24 March 2013 (GMT)

Ebony mail a part of ebony armor for Matching Set purposesEdit

I believe this must have been a bug that has been fixed (I am however using the unofficial patch on top of 1.9.29.0.8 - the list of bugs it 'fixes' doesn't mention this, though)

It can easily be reproduced: Using a character with the perk, put on all ebony armor. Note the armor rating. Note the difference in armor value between the chest piece/body ebony armor and the ebony mail. Add/subtract the difference and see if there are anyother changes than this when you swithc from one to the other. Now try the same thing with say orcish armor and note the additional drop.

--62.198.95.166 18:59, 30 March 2013 (GMT)

There is no mentioning of this in the patch notes. Moreover the armor wasn't changed in the patch (or any prior patch) at all. The USKP never made an attempt to fix this, despite changing other aspects of the armor. As far as I can see the note was never true, the armor has had the keyword ArmorMaterialEbony required for the perk to work all along. --Alfwyn (talk) 15:15, 21 January 2014 (GMT)
While the patch notes mention matching perk fixes, that just did add checks for additional armor keywords, and some items were changed to use those keywords. But the Ebony Mail wasn't changed at all, the ArmorMaterialEbony keyword was always part of the perk and the Ebony Mail. --Alfwyn (talk) 16:33, 21 January 2014 (GMT)
MatchingSetHeavy in the original Skyrim.esm, however, doesn't include ArmorMaterialEbony, so all ebony was unaffected by the perk, including the Ebony Mail. I'll restore the note here, and it's already noted at Ebony Armor. Robin Hood  (talk) 06:55, 22 January 2014 (GMT)
Oops, you're right. --Alfwyn (talk) 13:39, 22 January 2014 (GMT)

More "fixes"?Edit

"Getting too close to any non-allied NPC can trigger the poison aura, effectively attacking the NPC. This effect can cause pickpocketing and sneaking to fail where it would normally succeed."

"The smoke emitted by the poison cloak can obscure a significant part of the screen in first-person view and thus interfere with your ability to see enemies while in combat; the effect is especially noticeable when you are stationary or aiming a bow."

Were these two drawbacks patched or fixed by something? I put the Mail on after having it gathering dust in a chest for a LONG time, and snuck around Whiterun with it. The smoke effect did not appear in first-person view, and sneaking around NPCs in town didn't appear to damage them at all. I checked Skyrim:Patch and Skyrim:USKP and didn't see mention of this being addressed on either page. --Xyzzy Talk 03:17, 11 September 2013 (GMT)

Testing resultsEdit

Did some minor checking to see how effective the Muffle effect is, and noticed something interesting. I checked my MovementNoiseMult (via the 'player.getav' console command) while wearing no Muffle items, and while not under the effect of the Muffle spell. The value of this variable was 1. I then added the Ebony Mail, equipped it, and checked the variable again. I still had a MovementNoiseMult value of 1. I moved around a bit, then checked it again, and it was still at 1. Getting a bit annoyed, I dropped into Sneak Mode, and checked MovementNoiseMult one final time. This time, the game returned a value of 0. To be safe, I added a set of Shrouded Boots to my inventory, equipped them, then checked MovementNoiseMult while I was not in Sneak Mode, and the game returned a value of 0.5. The conclusion here is that not only is the Muffle effect set to a value of 1 (something that is stated on this Talk Page, so it's no surprise), but the Muffle effect only takes effect while you're in Sneak Mode; when you're walking around normally, you aren't Muffled at all! I found this to be pretty surprising. Swk3000 (talk) 13:10, 13 October 2013 (GMT)

I'm a little confused. You said that your MovementNoiseMult value was 0.5 while wearing the Shrouded Boots and NOT sneaking? This seems to go against your conclusion that Muffle only takes effect when in sneak mode. Am I not understanding something or did you misspeak? --Xyzzy Talk 15:30, 13 October 2013 (GMT)
Sorry; I worded that badly. I shoul have said that the Muffle effect *of the Ebony Mail* only works while you are in Sneak Mode. That's my bad. Swk3000 (talk) 15:46, 13 October 2013 (GMT)
Hmmm. That *is* kind of interesting. I wonder if this is the only item that only muffles when sneaking. --Xyzzy Talk 16:27, 13 October 2013 (GMT)
I'd be inclined to say that other Muffle items apply a constant effect, and that the Ebony Mail is the only one that only applies when you're sneaking. I think the only reason the Ebony Mail behaves differently is because it's an Artifact, so it's allowed to break the rules like that. However, I can't say this definitively, and I'm not quite up to checking the MovementNoiseMult of every Muffle-enchanted item in the game at the moment. I may do it later, though; if I do, I'll throw the results here, and edit the appropriate pages if needed. Swk3000 (talk) 17:33, 13 October 2013 (GMT)
Just did testing. Added every Muffle-enchanted footgear in the game to my inventory with the console, then checked my MovementNoiseMult with all of them while not in Sneak mode. As I thought, every other boot applies it's effects at all times, while only the Ebony Mail requires you to be in Sneak Mode. Swk3000 (talk) 20:29, 13 October 2013 (GMT)
Good to know. Thanks for checking. --Xyzzy Talk 23:30, 13 October 2013 (GMT)

Mannequin GlitchEdit

I put it on a mannequin in one of my hearthfire houses, and then after removing it and moving it to a different house and replacing the armor on that mannequin, it reappeared there. I'm pretty sure i have three of these now floating around in different chests. Other clothing/armor objects have been known to do this in my game, but mostly ones from the dragonborn mod (the house in Raven Rock has given me about 20 Dukaan masks). Does anyone else get this glitch? 144.118.218.165 01:36, 18 November 2013 (GMT)

I have had this happen as well, and came here specifically to discuss it. I don't remember the exact circumstances for the duplication (I could probably find them out), but they weren't very hard. I've duplicated the armor about a dozen times to sell. — Unsigned comment by 50.193.234.177 (talk) at 20:13 on 17 October 2014 (GMT)
No need to discuss it further here as it is already documented on under the Armor Duplication Glitch section of the page for Skyrim Glitches. —MortenOSlash (talk) 11:41, 18 October 2014 (GMT)

Giving to followers?Edit

Is the stuff about giving the Ebony Mail to followers really worth noting? I mean, I guess it makes sense, but there's probably pros and cons to giving ANY type of armor to followers, and it's not like the Ebony Mail is worthless to players. That section kind of seems more like personal preference than anything, as the Ebony Mail is still pretty useful for players. At the very least, it could stand to be condensed a bit. What does everyone think? ThuumofReason (talk) 16:03, 2 January 2014 (GMT)

Well, it presents a solution to the fairly serious drawbacks of the Ebony Mail, which I wouldn't want removed from the page. Not being able to see enemies and (given the nature of the enchantment) having sneak or pickpocket fail are pretty serious imo. That being said, I think the follower part could probably be condensed into one or two sentences. --AN|L (talk) 16:18, 2 January 2014 (GMT)
It does seem pretty wordy. The first sub-note about carry weight seems especially unnecessarily in-depth. --Xyzzy Talk 13:22, 3 January 2014 (GMT)

Ebony Mail disappearing glitch?Edit

So one night I decided to lighten my load and remove some armor and weapons from my inventory and store them in my hearthfire house. I decided the ebony mail was too heavy, so I placed it on a mannequin, only to realize that it had dissapeared 10 minutes later. It was no big deal since I hadn't done much in those 10 minutes, so I reloaded a save and put it in a chest (I might have given it to serana, it's been a while so I don't remember) It's been about a month since (real time not game time) I put it in the chest or gave it to serana, and when I went to look for it, it wasn't in any of the places I could have put it in. I am 100% sure I've looked in every single place I could have stored it, and I haven't found it. I could always reload a save, but in that month I have done so many lengthy missions that it would take another month to get back on track if I were to do so. I am playing on Xbox 360 with the latest update (I don't know the number), please tell me if I am being an idiot and I haven't checked everywhere or if this is a problem other people have had and what I should do about it. Gamertag is FraughtGibbon57 if you would like to contact me. Thanks — Unsigned comment by 71.225.89.156 (talk) at 21:21 on March 31, 2014

Hi, I haven't seen or heard about a glitch with this armor in chest/with serena, although you could check her page/talk page to be sure. If you still have the save I would suggest saving your game, then reloading the one from about a month ago to see if you can find exactly where you put it after getting it back from the manniquin, at least that way you'll be able to just check that one container/or confirm if you've checked the right container. I've done it before thinking I've definitely put something somewhere only to have it turn up in a different hearthfire built house, same container. Sorry I can't be more help. Biffa (talk) 22:09, 31 March 2014 (GMT)
Serana could have equipped it as her default armor. You'll need to give her something with a higher base defence (which is only daedric armor) to make her unequip it. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 09:19, 8 April 2014 (GMT)

Poison cloak effect of Ebony Mail does not end InvisibilityEdit

It is possible to stand next to an enemy while they take poison damage and this does not break invisibility, however the enemy will need to be alert and looking for a fight for the poison to trigger. One way this can be accomplished by shooting an arrow into the environment, and turning invisible before you are discovered. Tested in Movarth's Lair.
