Adius Vilius, an Imperial guard, is the captain of the Bruma Guard. He is the quest-giver for the series of quests centered around the Bruma guard and in addition, Bentior and Dar'taqto will ask for your help in convincing Adius to drop charges against them. If you report Alammu Nethre's blackmailing, he will arrest her at the Jerall View Inn.
He is initially found just inside the door of the Castle Great Hall and will immediately approach you to ask for your help in tracking down some Akaviri artifacts. After that, he spends most of his days standing guard near the northern gate, heading back inside at 7pm and pacing around the guard barracks until he heads out again at 9am.
Once you have completed his first quest, Adius will approach you for another task: a delicate situation concerning some Talos worshipers in the Jeralls. Once you have dealt with them, and as long as you kept them all alive, he will ask a final favor: eliminating Thorina's Cutters, a criminal gang that has been terrifying County Bruma. Depending on your choices in the second quest, during Service Rewarded he may be detained by Thalmor justiciar Armion and teleported to Blue River Prison.
Adius is decked out in guard armor: cuirass, gloves, boots and shield. He also carries a set of clothes and a torch. He is armed with an Imperial sword, a steel dagger and an Imperial bow with 12 steel arrows.

DialogueEdit
When greeting you, Adius will state:
- "I'm the captain of the guard. We keep the peace here in Bruma."
- "Don't get any funny ideas here in Bruma, or you're in for a stay in the dungeon."
- "See it, report it."
- "If you ever catch wind of anything untoward whatsoever going on in Bruma, tell it to me or my men."
You can then ask him a few questions:
- What's it like being Bruma's guard captain?
- "It's tough. On one side, you've got criminals - the kind that like to hide behind law and policy to wriggle out of justice. On the other, you've got politics, constantly meddling in our affairs as everyone walks on eggshells. And here I am, in the center, just trying to make things work for the people. Sometimes I wish I'd stayed down in the Imperial City."
- You're from the Imperial City?
- "Yeah. Me and my family - wife and children are still there, in fact. Left because the place is swarming with people, hard to find any work. Came up here, couldn't find much work either, joined the guard on a whim. Saw a lot. Rose through the ranks. And now I'm guard captain. Funny how things work out. I try to take my duties seriously - and send as much as I can back to my loved ones."
- Politics often gets in the way of your work?
- "More than you might think. Between the count, the White-Gold Concordat and all the other treaties, the rules are constantly changing. All I want to do is protect these people, jail criminals, earn my keep - but then the damned wind changes and, with it, the law. And then, what do you know? I'm supposed to jail this group, and that group, and the other group, and for what? For politics. Despite it all, though, I wouldn't trade this job for the world. It's rewarding. Fulfilling. And at least it lets me provide for myself and my family"

Absent AntiquityEdit
Can find him just inside the entrance to Castle Bruma. Once you enter, he will immediately approach you:
- "Excuse me, sorry to bother. I don't suppose you've seen any priceless Akaviri heirlooms gallivanting around Bruma, have you?"
- I'm sorry, what?
- "Akaviri heirlooms. Priceless Akaviri heirlooms. Seen any?"
- No heirlooms. Sorry.
- "As I suspected. Sorry to bother you, citizen. Just, err, let me know if any do crop up, yeah? Thanks."
- (Lie) Actually, yes, I have a whole barrel of them in my pack.
- "Ha! Very funny. I'd laugh if I weren't too tired to get the sound out. Just, err, let me know if any do crop up, yeah? Thanks."
After this you can XYZ:
- What's all this about Akaviri heirlooms?
- "A whole lot of uproar about nothing, that's what. The Count's been nagging my life and soul out about the damned things. You see, the Carvains have a sort of... family tradition. They've acquired a taste for Akaviri artifacts, constantly collecting more and more. Been going on for centuries now. Well, it turns out poor old Count Desilus- ahem, Count Carvain - isn't too happy that his collection's been stolen."
- Your tone... tensions between you and the count?
- "No, not tensions as such. Just... I'm tired. I've had four sleepless nights in a row. The Count's talking my ear off about these artifacts, and it's stopping me from tending to more important issues. Err, not that I'm disloyal to Count Carvain, of course. I've never had reason to dislike our ruler. Better him than some of the other counts and countesses in the province."
- You mentioned "more important issues"?
- "Yes. This damned artifact business doesn't affect anyone except the Count. While I'm out chasing after shiny baubles, people are getting killed by bandits and waylaid on the road. I mean, we've got Thorina's Cutters roaming the Jeralls and harrying travelers, for Stendarr's sake. And I'm wandering Bruma after trinkets like some lost paint horse looking for its master."
- Well, err, good luck with that.
- "Thanks. Divines know I need it..."
- Could you use some help searching for them?
- "I... well, that's... oh, who am I kidding? Absolutely. This is driving me crazy. Just bring them back to me when you've found them and I'll be extremely appreciative. And I mean EXTREMELY appreciative. Seriously. I feel like offing myself right about now."
Once you've agreed to help, you can ask for more specifics, which will provide you with a number of leads to follow up on:
- What, exactly, was stolen?
- "Akaviri artifacts. I don't know anything more specific than that. Rignar and the Count both told me, but, honestly, it flew in one ear and out the other. If you want to know exactly what artifacts to keep your eyes peeled for, Rignar can probably tell you."
- When and how were the artifacts stolen?
- "I'm not too sure on the details of that, to be honest. Rignar - the castle steward - was the first one who noticed them missing. Might be worth speaking to him if you think that's interesting evidence to dig up."
- Have any suspects?
- "Not in particular, but then again, the lowlifes of Bruma don't exactly hide themselves all that well. The... shadier tavern in town, the Restful Watchman. Full of thieves, bandits, thugs and other miscreants. Might be a decent place to start your search."
- How did the thief even get inside the castle?
- "I have no idea how they'd manage that, honestly. Either adept stealth or good luck. Probably a bit of both."
- Why would the thief want the artifacts? Monetary value, or...?
- "Almost definitely the resale value. Akaviri artifacts are very often one-of-a-kind, and they can fetch a very high price to the right buyers. Someone possessing those artifacts could find themselves becoming very wealthy, very quickly. I suspect that's the motive here."
After this, he will move to his usual schedule.
When Bentior says won't do anything:
- Bentior won't tell me anything without legal pressure.
- "Bentior wants legal pressure? Heh. That can certainly be arranged. Take... this. A letter, with my signature. Show it to him and he's sure to change his tune."
Once you return from Capstone
- Botram: "There's a skeeving thug inside my house! When are you going to do something?"
- Adius: "There's a trap door inside your house, you know that. I don't want to march in there in case they're planning an ambush."
- Botram: "There's a trap door inside my house? I didn't realize until now..."
- Adius: "Let's just wait a few more minutes and see if the thief decides to try his luck leaving the building before we do anything rash."
- Botram: "Damn it all! Skeeving thieves can just wander inside while I'm sleeping and steal what little coin I have to my name. Kynareth give me strength."
Botram:
- What's the situation?
- "So now old Botram's got a thug inside his house, apparently. Just wonderful. To be honest, I'd rather be dealing with this than going on Count Carvain's wild guar chase. Ahem. I should ask before I march in there and deal with the thief, did your investigation turn up any leads about the Count's precious artifacts?"
- The thief's going to deliver them to a contact in the Bruma Caverns.
- "You found a lead! That's no small relief. I guess that means you go find him in the caverns while I go deal with the thief in Botram's house?"
- Apparently the trap door in Botram's house leads to the Caverns.
- "That changes things. Well, at least now we can kill two birds with one stone - if it's true, that is. Under most circumstances I'd insist on going in first. I'm captain of the guard, it's my duty to shoulder the risk. Under most circumstances I'd insist on going in first. I'm captain of the guard, it's my duty to shoulder the risk. Let's go."
When at court:
- Desilus: "So this is the thief, Captain? You mean to say that my artifacts have been found?"
- Adius: "Yes, Count Carvain. He stole your artifacts and attempted to deliver them to the bandits operating in the Bruma Caverns."
- Desilus: "I see. Well, of course, I expect he shall be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Now, my artifacts?"
- Adius: "Actually, this new friend to Bruma has them."
- Desilus: "And who's this?"
- Adius: "A friend. Responsible for tracking down the artifacts and finding the thief, in fact. I'd say they deserve a lot of credit, Count Carvain."
- Desilus: "Ah, a friend to Bruma! Such tales are always gratifying to hear of. In fact, Captain, would you mind giving us a moment to speak?"
- Adius: "Err, of course. I'll just be waiting over there. I'd like to say a few words to this new friend to Bruma before they leave."
End, gives you some more gold as a reward:
- "It's rare to see someone so willing to help another these days. You went to great lengths to find those damned artifacts, and for that, you have my thanks. I don't know what Count Carvain said to you and I don't really mind. The Count and I don't always see eye-to-eye, but I have a duty. Anyway, something makes me think we may see each other again. People like you tend to make waves, don't they? Take this. A personal "thank you" gift from me. Safe travels, my friend. And thanks."
A Delicate SituationEdit
A few days later:
- "Hey, nice to see you around. Listen, there's a situation, and there are few people I can trust with this. Mind speaking to me when you have a moment?"
Leave and return:
- About this problem you're having...
- "Ah, so maybe you'll help me with this? That's great news. As I said, there's a situation. Don't go around publicizing this, but a new threat's cropped up, far to the east of Bruma. Not bandits, not hedge wizards. Talos worshippers. Believe me, I don't have any bones to pick with Talos worshippers. People can worship whoever they want to worship, as far as I'm concerned. But this has me spooked. I don't want Armion and his damned Justiciars to arrest them and send them off to Blue River Prison, or worse. And I'm tied up in Bruma dealing with other matters. I hate to ask, but... Would you help me with this?"
Can first ask a few questions:
- What, exactly, do you want me to do?
- "I'm not asking you to kill them, or arrest them, or hand them over to the Thalmor. I don't have anything against Talos worship. I'm asking you to convince them to lie low, that's all. I want to spare them the wrath of the Thalmor, and spare Bruma's people the consequences."
- Wait, wouldn't this be illegal?
- "My priority is protecting the citizens of Bruma. My job is to uphold the law. Most of the time those goals align, but when they don't, well... I know where my true loyalties lie, and they don't lie with paper or politics."
- I'm a bit out of the loop. What's the big deal about Talos?
- "You don't know? You certainly weren't kidding when you said you were out of the loop! Well, Talos is - was, formerly - the Ninth Divine. He was originally a man - Tiber Septim - before ascending to godhood. He was widely worshipped alongside the other eight Divines before the White-Gold Concordat with the Dominion. Now it's illegal to worship him, and the Thalmor deal with 'heretics' very seriously."
- What's Blue River Prison?
- "Err... well, it's only spoken of in rumors and whispers, but to go by the rumors, it's... It's the Thalmor prison camp here in Cyrodiil. It's where they send those they find 'problematic'. Talos worshippers, dissidents, that sort of thing."
Then decide if help:
- I'm not helping you.
- "I... I suppose I can't fault you for that. Dealing with Talos worship is walking on thin ice."
- I'll help you.
- "First, let me be clear. I'm not asking you to kill them, and I'm not asking you to hand them over to the Thalmor. I hate them as much as any Imperial. No, I'm asking you to... convince them to lie low. I don't care if they keep worshiping Talos, they just need to do it privately. I don't want the Thalmor making an example out of them, and I don't want them to use this as an excuse to step up their presence in Bruma. And that's likely. Given their location near a county border, the Cheydinhal nobility might get involved. Political disaster waiting to happen. So, just go and speak with them. Like I said, they're far to the east of Bruma, near County Cheydinhal. Here, I'll mark it on your map, just in case."
Speak after this:
- "So, I assume you've reached a mutual understanding? Or are you still in negotiations?"
When you meet Aera, she will initially be shocked by Adius's request:
- Captain Adius sent me. Your Talos worship is causing issues.
- "Sending someone to stop us worshipping Talos? Has the captain gone mad? I always considered the captain a man of honor, a man of tolerance. Someone who refused to be a puppet to the Thalmor and their shameful demands. Why such a sharp change in the captain's outlook?"
If you manage to convince Aera to either lie low or give up the worship entirely, she will comment positively on Adius:
- "Let Adius know we're sorry for any problems this has caused for him, or may cause him. He's a good man, clearly. Any other guard captain would have handed us over to the Thalmor, no questions asked."
- "Captain Adius is a good man."
After spoken to Aera he will run up:
- "I'm grateful, friend, that you did what I asked. But I wonder now if it was the right call. I appreciate your loyalty, but this could turn out badly. If the Thalmor have so much as an inkling that I'm shielding Talos worshippers, heads will roll. Most likely mine. And that's if they're feeling merciful. But what's done is done. There's no time for second-guessing. Here's hoping we made the right call. Here's your reward. You've earned it, friend."
- "You convinced them to stop worshipping Talos, at least for the time being. I'm stunned. I didn't even ask for that, and yet you came through. Listen. I realize this is hard for them and I don't do this lightly. But the future of Bruma would look bleak if the Thalmor thought I was enabling Talos worship. I owe you a debt a hundred times over, friend. Here, take this coin from the treasury as a thank you from me. Our job here is done."
- "You didn't do as I asked. I asked you to get them to at least worship more subtly, but now they've got more resolve than ever. I've never been one to enforce the Concordat. I can't stand that damned thing. But this is a great risk. If the Thalmor find out about this, then I'll probably get dragged off in the middle of the night to Blue River Prison. Aera and her fellows as well. But, well, I honestly wouldn't have felt right about forcing them to change their ways. That... well, between you and me, I'd be a hypocrite. Here's your payment."
Either way, he will continue:
- "I guess for the time being, we go our separate ways once more. But something makes me think our paths will cross again."
If chose violence:
- "I'm here. Finally got done with- By the Divines. You... you butchered all these people! And for what? For what?"
- Killing them was necessary to protect Bruma. You know that, Adius.
- "But at what cost? At what cost? My job is to protect Bruma's people and you just cut them down like dogs!"
- My reasons are my own.
- "Damn your reasons! My job is to protect Bruma's people and you just slaughtered them in cold blood!"
Whatever your response, he will conclude:
- "Get out of my sight, you murderous bastard/bitch. I have no desire to speak with your kind."
Against the CuttersEdit
Walks up to you:
- "Hey, friend. I just wanted to talk. To say you're a stranger who just wandered into my path as I was looking for stolen artifacts, we've accomplished a lot together. You're a rare sort. You're the kind of person who stands by people and does good by a fair city. I can respect that more than I can respect most. If you're up for it, I was wondering if you'd be up for having a few drinks at the Jerall View? We can, you know, talk as friends."
- Sure. I'd love to.
- "Great. I'm looking forward to catching up."
- You're not getting all emotional, are you?
- "Heh, not at all. 'Sentimental' might be a better word. Anyway, if you're up for it, I'm looking forward to catching up."
Standing:
- "Take a seat, friend. Relax. No point talking as friends if your feet and back are aching, eh?"
Sat down:
- "Ah, you came. Excellent. Now we can talk as friends. I guess I should just cut to the chase. For a long time I've felt like I've just been going through the motions of being captain of the guard, you know? Like a part of my soul was torn out."
- Why've you been feeling like that?
- "It all goes back to a... mistake I made a long time ago. A guardswoman under my service, Avanne Vadici. She was one of the most courageous and stalwart guards - or friends - I've ever had. And she died. All because of me."
- How did she die? / You're saying that you caused her death?
- "I was leading a raid against some bandits. Some of the most dangerous, most loathsome bandits in the Jeralls. She was fighting alongside us. I made some... bad calls. We were surrounded, and she perished. I've never forgiven myself for it. Never. And since then, it's never been the same. When you're a guard you've got to be somewhat distant from things, you can't get too friendly with the people you're serving and arresting. And so there's been a hole in my life ever since."
- So what's next for you and the Bruma guard?
- "Well, the other day, that thief you helped apprehend - the artifact pilferer, Atienne Guilette - got out of jail, somehow. I suspect we haven't seen the last of him. But as of right now? Things have been pretty quiet. Except for one thing. One big thing. Ever run into Thorina's Cutters?"
- Thorina's Cutters? Who are they? / No, I haven't.
- "Well, they're some of the meanest bastards I've ever seen. Strangely organized, too - for bandits. That's what we're up against."
- Yes, as a matter of fact, I have.
- "Then you know the kind of viciousness we're up against."
Either response will then lead to:
- "We're up against"? You're roping me into this?
- "Oh. Right. Yeah. I've gotten so used to working with or alongside you, I just sort of assumed. There's no pressure on you to help me with this, of course. But the Cutters need dealing with. I've had... more than enough of them."
- I'm not helping you with this Cutter problem.
- "I... well, I was hoping you'd be up for it. Listen, if you decide you do want to help, just let me know. I doubt the problem will solve itself."
- Always happy to help you, friend.
- "Thanks. I appreciate it."
Return:
- I've reconsidered. I'll help you deal with Thorina's Cutters.
- "Now that's what I like to hear."
Either way he continues:
- All right, what do I need to do?
- "All right, then. They're - our scouts suggest they're - based near Greenwood, where the Jeralls meet the Great Forest. An old repurposed fort. Locals and bandits alike have taken to calling it Fort Cutpurse. End Thorina. Meet me back in Bruma when you're done - I'll see what I can do to get you a fitting reward. Best of luck, friend. Be careful in there."
Ever hear?
- And my working with you has changed that?
- "Yes, it has."
Service RewardedEdit
Once you arrive:
- "You're here. My friend, you've done Bruma a world of good. You've helped me with so much. So much. County Bruma's safer, thanks to you. You deserve a great reward for your service. Hopefully this'll suffice. Follow me, friend."
After speaking to the Count:
- "I hope you like officious ceremony, heh. At least there are some material rewards to be had as well. I imagine the fancy title will get you places - in time, at least. I've been thinking about it, but I've decided not to retire. Your services to Bruma have inspired me. Given me hope. There are still decent people in this world. And having the weight of guilt about... my failure... somewhat expunged is a welcome relief. C'mon. I'll see you out."
Outside if all ok:
- "Well done, friend. Well done, indeed. Best of luck with your future adventures. But do stop in now and again, won't you? I'm sure, in time, I'll hear tales of your exploits throughout Cyrodiil on the lips of every bard that comes through town. Best wishes, friend. Do keep in touch."
Outside if not good:
- "Uh-oh. Armion's up ahead. Damn it, I did not need this - today of all days. In my experience, Thalmor have got a way of killing the mood."
Armion will then proceed to mock Adius:
- Armion: "Ah, Adius Vilius. Just who I was looking for."
- Adius: "Is this about those reports? Did it really have to be now? Right after a big celebration? Do the Thalmor have need of me, right now?"
- Armion: "Yes, Vilius, we do. But not in a meeting hall, oh, no. We desire your presence... elsewhere."
- Adius: "What in Oblivion are you talking about?"
- Armion: "We desire your presence in Blue River Prison, Vilius."
- Adius: "Blue River? The Thalmor prison camp? What is the meaning of this?"
- Armion: "You thought you could hide a group of Talos worshippers [sic] from us? You thought to play the Thalmor for fools? Are you really so dense? Enough of this. The dramatic buildup and suspense were both truly palpable, but now that I've seen the look on your face the novelty has worn off. Guardsmen! Let's take Vilius on a little holiday to Blue River. You, there! Down."
Dartaqto misc taskEdit
Speaking to Dar'taqto about his issues will have him admit:
- What trouble are you in?
- "This one has been falsely accused of stealing from Ice-Wind Traders, the general store. They tell him he has stolen their hides, and that he is selling them at his stall. This is false. This one has done nothing of the sort. In fact, perhaps you could help. Adius Vilius is the captain of the guard here in Bruma. If you speak to him, perhaps he will change his mind. This one fears he considers him a dirty thief, and will not hear his pleas."
Alternatively, you can hear about Dar'taqto's troubles from Adius himself:
- Bruma has a problem with criminals?
- "Well, I don't know if I'd go that far. We have it fairly okay compared to some other parts of the province. The problem is that the criminals here aren't driven to it out of desperation, they just want the coin. To get rich. They know how to game the system. Except Dar'taqto. He's... well, never mind. I've probably told you too much."
If you fail to persuade him, he will simply say:
- "No, I can't. Sorry, but I can't go blabbing about peoples'... checkered pasts."
On the other hand, passing a Speech check or having completed Against the Cutters (?) will have him reveal:
- Go on. You can tell me. (Persuade)
- "Well, listen. Dar'taqto's a thief. Likes to call himself a "cat burglar". Funny Khajiit sense of humor. But it's funny - he steals from those who don't deserve it - like, say, other thieves, or power-mad politicians. And then he sells the stuff - with a discount for those who truly need it, no less. I don't understand that cat, but I can't really complain. As thieves go, he's one of the better ones. But he currently has charges leveled against him from Cedus, the owner of Ice-Wind Traders. So that's that."
Either way, you can ask him about the charges
- Can we talk about the charges leveled against Dar'taqto?
- "He's accused of stealing from Ice-Wind Traders. What of it? Oh, wait. Don't tell me he roped you into having the charges dropped? He's been trying that tactic a lot recently. I have sympathy for the cat, being accused like this while the bigger fish swim free, but what can I do? I have to enforce the law."
- Did you ever get evidence against Dar'taqto?
- "No, but Cedus made the accusation. I don't know what you expect me to do, but I can't just drop charges on a whim like this."
- Can you really arrest someone based on one person's word? (Persuade)
- "No, I can't. But if I have two people each claiming the other is lying, I can't just drop the charges."
If you manage to pass Average Speech check or if you have completed Absent Antiquity, you can convince Adius to drop the charges:
- You know me. I wouldn't be doing this if it weren't just.
- "I... suppose so..."
- Can you really arrest someone based on one person's word? (Persuade) / Besides, can you really arrest him based on Cedus's word alone?
- "I... you have a point. Your word, along with Dar'taqto's, is one more voice than Cedus has on his side... Very well. Consider the charges dropped. However, I'm afraid it comes with some strings attached. I can't drop charges like this and return things back to the way they were. Consider the charges dropped, but Dar'taqto's evicted of residency in Bruma. No way I can get away with dropping these charges without people starting to ask questions about how fit I am to be guard captain. It's no secret he's a thief, but he's, well... he's about as close to a 'good thief' as you can get without reading a children's bedtime story. Tell... tell him I'm sorry. I was sort of fond of that cat. Wow, it felt strange to say that. Anyway, you should probably go tell Dar'taqto the bittersweet news."
NotesEdit
- Adius owns a horse, Januarius, that resides at the Bruma Stables just outside town.
- He is voiced by River Kanoff
ConversationsEdit
You may overhear Armion complaining to Adius after failing to intimidate Neremus Agrecian, as well as Adius warning Razzada the Resplendent:
Armion: "Guard Captain Adius Vilius, I urge you to listen to reason. The Thalmor's authority extends across the entire Empire. Bruma is no exception." |
Adius: "Razzada! Not causing trouble, are we?" |
Armion will then continue to pester Adius:
Armion: "Guard Captain, a moment. I need to speak with you."
Adius: "What is it this time?"
Armion: "I need you to censure your guardsmen. Multiple times I have heard them exclaim "Nine Divines" while sparring. They also refuse to listen to me when I ask them to stop. Some even laugh!" |
Armion: "I don't trust the Restful Watchman or her owner. Too many suspicious characters there. I want you to conduct a search of the premises for evidence of Talos worship." |
Armion: "The refugee situation is getting out of control. Keep accepting this many people from Skyrim and we'll be sure to end up with a couple of Talos worshippers." |
