Rignar

Rignar, a Nord rogue, is the steward at Castle Bruma, serving Count Desilus Carvain. You will be able to receive either of the bounty quests from him, and will collect your rewards from him too. Following Service Rewarded, you will be able to purchase White Pine Lodge from him for 10,000 gold. You will interrogate him during Absent Antiquity and Ugly Love, but he will be of little use in both cases.

He sleeps from midnight to 7am in the Guest Wing of the castle, before enjoying a two-hour breakfast in the Great Hall. Between 9am and 6pm he will be found at the Count's side, dispensing advice and serving his duties. At 6pm he will eat a two-hour dinner before retiring to his quarters and spending the next for hours relaxing. On weekends he will instead wake up at 6am and head over to the Jerall View Inn for a special breakfast. The only exception to this schedule is during Service Rewarded, when he will be waiting in the throne room alongside the city's assembled nobles to acclaim you Friend to Bruma.

Rignar is richly dressed in Colovian fine clothes and a hat. He also carries a steel sword, the key to the castle's display cases, a random ring, a set of merchant's clothes and a random assortment of jewelry, gems, gold, lockpicks, food and drink.

DialogueEdit

When approaching him, Rignar will greet you with any of the following:

"Welcome to Castle Bruma, seat of County Bruma, jewel of the Jeralls and all Cyrodiil."
"I'm the count's steward here in Bruma. If there's anything you need, I'll try my best to help you."
"I can handle most smaller matters. Try not to bother the count unless it's important. He's a busy man."

You can then ask him a few questions:

You're the steward in Castle Bruma?
"Indeed, I am. I handle the day-to-day business of the county on behalf of the count, the fair and honorable Desilus Carvain."
Tell me about County Bruma.
"County Bruma is the jewel of Cyrodiil! Though the mountains may be frosty, the hearts of our people are as warm as the brightest hearth. Of course, that's not to say that she's perfect. As with any county, we have our fair share of vicious wildlife and shameless brigands. But we don't let that put a dampener on things! That's the Nord way, after all, and Bruma's as Nordic as she is Imperial."

Quest-Related DialogueEdit

Absent AntiquityEdit

After agreeing to help Adius Vilius recover the Count's stolen Akaviri artifacts, he'll suggest you start your investigations with Rignar:

What, exactly, was stolen?
"Akaviri artifacts. I don't know anything more specific than that. Rignar and the Count both told me, but, honestly, it flew in one ear and out the other. If you want to know exactly what artifacts to keep your eyes peeled for, Rignar can probably tell you."
When and how were the artifacts stolen?
"I'm not too sure on the details of that, to be honest. Rignar - the castle steward - was the first one who noticed them missing. Might be worth speaking to him if you think that's interesting evidence to dig up."

When asked about the theft, Rignar will be delighted you're looking into it, though he won't be of much use:

Adius hired me. Let's talk about the stolen artifacts.
"So the guard captain's actually looking into it? Excellent. Can't have the Carvain artifact collection lost to some random burglar!"
What artifacts, exactly, are missing?
"Some amulets, some rings, a katana. All of Akaviri design. Priceless relics. Very valuable, and very well-loved by the Count."
Did you see the theft itself? What happened?
"I didn't, no. I was just doing the rounds here in the castle. I was about to go to bed for the night when I noticed something. Normally there's a little glint in the corner of my eye, the light bouncing off of one of the Akaviri amulets. But this time - nothing. I went to investigate, and the artifacts were gone. I'm sorry I can't be of more use."
I'm done questioning you for now.
"Best of luck with your investigation."

After Bentior stonewalls your investigation, asking him about it will simply have him point you back to Adius:

Bentior won't tell me anything without legal pressure.
"Hmm. Perhaps go speak with the guard captain? I'm afraid such things are out of my hands."

Service RewardedEdit

Once you have completed the quest and received the title of Friend to Bruma from the Count, you will be able to purchase a house from Rignar:

Count Carvain told me I can now buy property in town?
"Ah, yes! A true friend to Bruma is more than welcome within our walls. We have one house currently on the market. It's called White Pine Lodge, conveniently located right at the heart of town. Spacious and luxurious - befitting a hero of your stature. She's currently on the market for 10,000 septims. Pricey, I'll grant you, but for a home of that caliber? I'd buy it in a heartbeat."
Maybe some other time.
"Ah! I understand. An investment of that sort isn't one to be taken lightly. I'll be here, if you change your mind."
That's a bit much, to say I'm a hero of Bruma...
"Mmm. I see what you mean, but to be honest, we're already selling it to you at well under the market value. If we could hand it to you for free without risking the integrity of the county coffers, I promise you we would."
I'll take it. (10,000 gold)
"Ah. I'd love to hand her over to you, but you don't have the coin. Maybe save up a little and come back?" (not enough gold)
"Excellent! It's an honor to welcome a hero such as yourself as a citizen of our city, friend. Here's the key and deed. Oh, and speak with Cedus Perusius, over at Ice-Wind Traders, next time you get the chance. I hear he's got a fair few furnishings in stock. Might help you spruce the place up a little. Other than that... well, welcome to our fair city, hero! I hope you find it a wonderful home for years to come."

Ugly LoveEdit

During Ugly Love, you can check in with Rignar to see if he has information about any recent mercenary raids:

Do you know of any nobles that hired mercenaries for a bandit raid last year?
"An interesting question. We keep records of expenses from members of the Bruma court. Especially the times it's coming out of our treasury. However, we don't give this kind of information out to anyone who so much as asks. Why do you want to know?"
Just give me the information.
"I can't unless I know why you want it. County Bruma can't be giving away everything she does to any random person who asks."
I'm with the Elder Council. (Persuade) (Lie)
"From the Elder Council? I don't think so."
"Oh! You are? My apologies for my abruptness. I will get you that information, absolutely. One moment while I go check the records. Just wait here."
I am investigating a kidnapping, on suspicions of foul play. (requires Average Speech check)
"Truly? Hmm. I see an honest glint in your eye. I think you're telling the truth. Well, then. I will get you any information I can from the records. One moment while I go check them. You just wait around here."

At this point he will set off briefly before returning with some information:

"Well, I've checked the records. There was one account of Afanna Eddici hiring some mercenaries for a job similar to your description last year. She spends a lot of time around the castle, you can go speak to her if you wish. Out of memory, there was another who hired some mercenaries for a bandit raid last year too. It was... Simund Gautierre. Yeah, that's the one. Not too sure on the details. I'm going off of memory here, since his mission wasn't recorded in the books. Huh. Strange, that. We usually keep thorough records... Well, anyway, I hope I was of some help. But that's all I know, and all the books know. Best of luck with your investigation."
