Hlan Oek
Veloth's Path
The High District and Temple

Administered by House Hlaalu, Hlan Oek is a town of two halves. The western side where the temple rises high above all is turned towards the celebration (and in some cases, commercialisation) of St. Veloth's travels, and remains somewhat friendly to outlanders and passers-by. The eastern half is dedicated towards shipbuilding, trade and industry, yet is cursed with a seedy underbelly that can prove lethal for the unwary.

The town itself lies astride Veloth's Path, a sacred route of pilgrimage running from Morrowind's western border to the holy Necrom. Pilgrims flock through the gates on their way to Almas Thirr, with many pausing either to pay their respects at the town's temple or to view the many wares of the hawkers and fraudsters that crowd the route. In doing so however they place themselves at risk, for criminals mingle along the crowd and the town itself has acquired something of a miserable reputation - as far as outlanders need be concerned, certainly. The Camonna Tong, a Dunmer nativist organization, are powerful here, and foreigners need not go far from the safer area around the main road to encounter a distinct unfriendliness, and in some unfortunate cases, death.

Hlan Oek's reputation for welcoming visitors has grown so poor that the temple has had to open its doors to provide beds and food for passing pilgrims, due to the continued reluctance of the Tong-dominated Council Club to do so. In this it succeeds admirably - the temple's Master is a keen believer in working actively to protect and support pilgrims on their travels, and oddly enough, finds many of its donations that enable it to do so coming in from the Camonna Tong, who remain faithful to its teachings in certain, specific ways.

Besides pilgrims, Hlan Oek's chief trade is in the shipping industry, and it contains a large hall complete with shipwrights to repair and build vessels for trade on the shallow Oek River and the much mightier Thirr. A great number of goods enter and exit the town via the river, a fair portion doing so illegally. Those few outlanders who somehow manage to find work here may therefore quickly find any principles compromised, for not many get by in Hlan Oek without growing tainted by the corruption coursing through its streets.

PeopleEdit

Hlan Oek's notables include its governor, Feldril Sathis, who is at least nominally the most influential figure in town, although his attention seems to be more often on the activities of Indoril Ilvi then upon his own patch. His right hand is the captain of the guard, Sidia Uveleth, who along with the town garrison mans the keep. Sidia's transferal here from the Hlaalu capital of Narsis was requested specially by Feldril, for reasons of his own.

No list of Hlan Oek's powerful can leave out the local Camonna Tong notables, including the strongman, Lloden Dadrys, who oversees a small empire of crime from the Council Club. In this he is aided by the criminal organization's control over certain stores and institutions scattered throughout the town. His position is an open secret among townsfolk, and Feldril has preferred studied ignorance to crackdowns.

Above town and internal politics stands the Temple, run by Nivis Serethran. Counting many Camonna Tong members among the Temple's worshipers, Nivis generally turns a blind eye to their activities except in the cases where they could impact upon the faithful traveling up Veloth's Path.

Other notable persons include Drissa Vendil, captain of the Brave Coda, which has laid over in town for lengthy repairs, Ithis Randaro, the head of the Shipbuilders and Sailors Hall, and Ralsa Hardil, who runs the Morning Sun Cornerclub - the friendlier of the town's drinking dens.

Getting There and AroundEdit

The road running north ultimately intersects with Indal-ruhn and the great canton city of Almas Thirr. The town can also be reached by traveling north from Idathren. Silt striders can carry you here from the Hlaalu settlements of Arvud and Andothren, while a boat runs to Almas Thirr, Idathren and the small Hlaalu Ferry.

Places of Interest Around Hlan OekEdit

The crumbling Dwemer ruin of Bthungtch stands upon the island to the east, while divers in the waters around the docks will find the entrance to Vartalit Grotto. The Monastery of St. Delyn stands in the hills to the west, while the cavern of Ushudartus to the south has attracted the profit-minded attention of a hapless eggminer.
