Welcome!Edit

Hello Alarra! Welcome to UESPWiki. It's always good to have new members. If you would like to help improve any of our pages, you may want to take a look at the following links:

If you would like to spice up your userpage, click here for a list of userboxes you can use, including a guide to making your own.

When you're editing, it's always a good idea to leave edit summaries to explain the changes you have made to a particular page, and remember to sign your talk page posts with four tildes ~~~~. Also, the "show preview" button is a great way to view the changes you've made so far without actually saving the page (our patrollers really appreciate it!).

Feel free to practice editing in the sandbox or discuss the games in the forums. If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact one of our mentors. Have fun! —Skyrimplayer (talk) 03:36, 18 September 2012 (GMT)

ESO StoresEdit

I was just wondering how you were going about doing ESO's stores. Having only started paying attention to stores once I got to Daggerfall, and not really noticing the ones on Stros, I'm not sure what format you're taking. In Daggerfall, I remember seeing the Marketplaces each have a bunch of stalls, and also each of the store buildings has a number of different merchants inside, whose stalls also have their own names. Are you making pages for each of the named marketplaces/buildings, and listing the stalls located within them, and/or are you doing pages for every individual merchant's stall (which also each have their own names)? If the former, it would keep the number of really short pages down, and consolidate their contents nicely (but only if they are suitably organised); if the latter, it may be easier to identify what you're looking for (but only if you realise that looking at the shop's banner gives its name). If both, then I would imagine transclusions would be beneficial to avoid having to write the same stuff up twice. --Enodoc (talk) 10:15, 17 March 2014 (GMT)

Pretty much in ESO, either each merchant has a named (or sometimes unnamed) stall outdoors, or they're in a named building, which doesn't have separate names inside. The marketplaces, at least the ones I've seen, don't have a general name. So, I've been creating individual pages for all of those named stalls/buildings. I think I asked about it in wiki chat and was told to do that, but I can't say for certain. - Alarra (talk) 17:50, 17 March 2014 (GMT)
OK cool, thanks. I'll have to have another look and see how many of the marketplaces have names on the map, but I thought most of them did. A building that I particularly noticed having names for the inside as well was the woodmill in Daggerfall, which has the alchemist's shop inside. --Enodoc (talk) 18:42, 17 March 2014 (GMT)

The Bank of BetnikhEdit

It has its own icon on the Stonetooth Fortress map (or, at least, it did when I made the page last week) so that's why it has its own page. Only if they have moved the banker NPC   Olfim gro-Grazob under the tooltip for the Stonetooth Market map icon should it be included under Stonetooth Market. If he's still listed under The Bank of Betnikh, and the bank still has its own icon on the map, then the bank gets its own page. --Enodoc (talk) 08:12, 14 July 2014 (GMT)

Ah, okay. I wasn't sure why it was on its own, and had turned it into a redirect simply because it was in the same location. I'll be sure to check for that in the future. Thanks for the correction! Alarra (talk) 23:43, 15 July 2014 (GMT)

Books, a requestEdit

Hi Alarra! I have been adding books to the guilds' pages when a huge suspicion hit me: "Aren't they randomly generated?!" From your last edits I am assuming that you explore Auridon at the moment. Would you mind entering a Mages Guild hall and compare books in "your" guild and the ones in "mine" I already added to Vulkhel Guard's guild or Skywatch's? Thanks! - Shuryard (talk) 23:49, 3 January 2015 (GMT)

I asked other players in the game, it looks like they are not random... Sorry to bother you - I am not used to MMOs ;-) - Shuryard (talk) 00:22, 4 January 2015 (GMT)
That's ok - I was thinking at first too that they were random as well - and I'm still not sure for all locations. The Mages Guild and Fighters Guild in Vulkhel Guard have the same books you listed, but I'm seeing different ones in the Skywatch Mages Guild (Mythical Beast, Real Powers, Bolga's Guide to Island Beasts, Father of the Niben, Fragment One, and The Book of Circles, Loredas Maxims on the ground floor; The Ruins of Kemel-Ze on the upper floor) and the Skywatch Fighters Guild (Nerevar Moon-and-Star). - Alarra (talk) 00:27, 4 January 2015 (GMT)
Hm... isn't that interesting... I found one bookshelf in Thalmor Headquarters (in the Mages Guild's room) which generates a different book each time I activate it. I am wondering if this is the case with the Skywatch's guild... I'll check. Thank you very much! - Shuryard (talk) 00:32, 4 January 2015 (GMT)

The Emperor's GuideEdit

Hey, I was talking to Legoless here about the physical guide. I think you mentioned you have a copy of the guide itself, so maybe you can help me? Just need clarification on how a heading on the different sections of the books is treated. Specifically the race/faction part that is repeated ("Redguards of the Daggerfall" etc) Covenant".

My question is, does this heading appear as a sort of sub-title for the book, or does it appear as the main heading for the entire body of the text that follows (as TIL have it). At the moment, I have created the Lore:The Improved Emperor's Guide to Tamriel sections to have the race/faction heading as a sub title, but this might not be true to how it appears in the actual book. Do you think its more faithful to the physical book to have the heading in the main body? Do you know of any screenshots that can be found? Thanks for any help. --Jimeee (talk) 13:26, 8 January 2015 (GMT)

For each section of the book, it's got the location in large text, and then the "Redguards of the Daggerfall Covenant" bit as a subtitle beneath that main heading. Here are three pictures I took so you can see what I mean. - Alarra (talk) 18:51, 8 January 2015 (GMT)
That's great, thanks for the pics. Interestingly, this one seems to have an insert that we don't have ("Here's what the guide says about Evermore..."). I have a funny feeling there might be a couple of odd captions and inserts missing overall. --Jimeee (talk) 12:59, 12 January 2015 (GMT)
You're welcome! Yep, one of my wiki projects right now is working on the book pages. I'm reading through the book right now and summarizing it in my sandbox (and making note of character names for the Lore:Names pages), and very briefly skimming over the text on the wiki as I read, correcting any typos I see. I think I did notice a missing caption or two (wasn't sure if we were supposed to show them even if we don't have the pictures), and I will go back and double-check them, and keep a closer eye on that in future sections as I read through it. - Alarra (talk) 18:08, 12 January 2015 (GMT)
Yeah, the image captions were left out of the TIL version for some reason. If you notice them missing, please feel free to add them in. Also, our gallery of publicly released concept art can be found here if you wanna check. —Legoless (talk) 18:15, 12 January 2015 (GMT)
Oh, thanks for the link! I definitely recognize some of them from the book. Will add those as well. - Alarra (talk) 18:19, 12 January 2015 (GMT)
Yeah, looking at some youtube vids, it looks like mostly concept art we already have. We can tweak the layout to make it work once we know how many images we are dealing with. A gallery at the bottom might work if we have too many to list. --Jimeee (talk) 18:36, 12 January 2015 (GMT)

FootnotesEdit

Hey Alarra. Just a small correction for when you're adding references: citation tags shouldn't have a space before them. They should usually be placed right after the full stop or comma. —Legoless (talk) 02:01, 24 January 2015 (GMT)

Ok, thanks for the heads-up. I didn't know whether there was a specific format to do those, and I'll pay attention to that while adding them in the future. :) - Alarra (talk) 02:08, 24 January 2015 (GMT)

Senche ConfusionEdit

Per this edit, would you mind taking a look at this discussion? Thanks. :) —Legoless (talk) 01:25, 28 January 2015 (GMT)

Dialogue ImagesEdit

I'm not sure we need duplicate images of ESO NPCs in the dialogue screen on pages that already have a 1:1 screenshot. Usually these would be candidates for deletion. Would you mind sharing your reasoning behind it? —Legoless (talk) 15:08, 25 March 2015 (GMT)

Dialogue images usually show a centered, well-lit image of a character, even in dark settings, and they allow you to see a lot more detail (especially on the character's face) than a full-body image. In addition to that, with some characters it's hard to see their face unless they're in dialogue. If it were my choice, they'd be the main page image for ESO NPCs, and I've suggested that before, but the consensus was that we're sticking with wiki policy for page images, keeping those full-body wherever possible, even if a dialogue screenshot is clearer. I was Skyping with AKB recently and brought that up, and he'd suggested uploading dialogue images as a second image to put on the page, because the top image doesn't have to be the only one (as an example, he'd mentioned that he knew of a screenshot of Alduin that was pretty good but didn't have his entire body and said that that could probably be put in the page.) ~ Alarra (talk) 17:26, 25 March 2015 (GMT)
Personally I prefer the dialogue screenshots, as you can actually "see" the person you are talking about. I generally prefer 3/4 to full-body images as well; why do I need to see the NPC's feet, when it's their face that distinguishes them? According to the guidelines, "the priority is to create an image that allows clear and easy visual identification of the NPC", and full body shots don't do that for me (the NPC in relation to the rest of the image is too small). Where was the discussion before? I don't remember seeing it on CP, but I may have missed it. Maybe it would be worth mentioning again, to see if any opinions have changed. --Enodoc (talk) 18:31, 25 March 2015 (GMT)
It wasn't in the CP at all; it was discussed several times in the IRC. Should this be brought to the CP? ~ Alarra (talk) 22:44, 25 March 2015 (GMT)
A lot of full-body shots actually replaced dialogue screenshots, so we have quite a few already available if consensus changes. —Legoless (talk) 23:16, 25 March 2015 (GMT)
Alarra: Just to respond to your question, any significant issue should be discussed on CP, even if it's already been discussed on IRC, just because IRC has only a limited user-base. It's mentioned on the IRC page, though it's only a brief bullet-point, "The chatroom cannot be used to make binding decisions." Now, having said that, not all issues are significant enough to warrant a CP discussion. For something as straight-forward as whether or not you should add more images to an article, which I would say is more "advice" than a "binding decision", I don't think it was unreasonable to do without such a discussion. If Legoless or others feel strongly about it, that's when it should become a CP discussion. Robin Hood  (talk) 00:48, 26 March 2015 (GMT)

Oh, cool. ^^ —Legoless (talk) 18:03, 10 October 2015 (UTC)

Related QuestsEdit

Hey Alarra! If you're planning on adding any more Related Quests sections to generic creature pages, the only quests that should be listed are ones that involve actual generic animals of that type. For example, Barbas is related to a quest, but we don't list that quest on Skyrim:Dog. On the other hand, generic Ash Spawn are related to several quests. —Legoless (talk) 19:08, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Ah, okay. I'd assumed it was for any individuals, not just generic ones. ~ Alarra (talk) 22:08, 3 April 2016 (UTC)
The issue is that we'd end up with huge lists on some pages. Imagine how many quests relate to scamps for instance (or even worse, something like Bosmer). For completion's sake, maybe we would want those lists, but if someone's looking at a generic/race page they probably aren't looking for quest info. —Legoless (talk) 22:52, 3 April 2016 (UTC)

Dunmer NamesEdit

How's the editing going on Lore:Dunmer Names? Is it behaving any better now that I've simplified the templates? Robin Hood  (talk) 18:42, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

Yep, much better! Just finished that particular page last night. It's still taking a long time when I submit the pages, upwards of a minute, but at least it's actually working and not going to white pages anymore. ~ Alarra (talk) 23:26, 15 May 2016 (UTC)
Good, glad to hear it. There's nothing much more we can do to decrease the time short of switching to traditional links with no templates, but if you do start getting white pages again, let me know and I'll send Dave an e-mail to see what he can do on his end. Lorebook Audio RecordingsEdit

I just noticed this idea on your user page. I've been thinking of trying to do the same thing, so I'd be very much on board for that! I'd also thought of trying to combine it with machinima, but that would be a considerably longer project and I don't actually have any TES games on PC. Anyway, ping me if you would like to talk about it some more, and perhaps bounce some ideas around! --Enodoc (talk) 08:46, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

This modder resource might be a good place to start. It was sent to me (and perhaps some of the other admins?) by the author Jalore for use on the wiki. —Legoless (talk) 15:33, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
I'd love something like this (and I've downloaded the mod to see what it's about too). With the ME/CFS, it's stupidly hard to concentrate, especially on reading, and I just don't have the focus (and often patience) to make my way through the books. Listening to them would be much easier. Robin Hood  (talk) 17:38, 28 July 2016 (UTC)
Machinima recreation of the books would be a TON of work, but it would finally give us something to do with our Youtube channel (which we have thanks to Google+). That is a really interesting idea to see about, assuming that's something we want to do. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 20:16, 28 July 2016 (UTC)

Legends QuestsEdit

Alarra, I've noticed that in Legends Quest Pages, you've been using third person. I know you're the more experienced editor, but I'm pretty sure that on the UESP we use second person. Oh, and I have a draft for a Legends Quest Header template in my userspace, ready for use. Thanks! - KINMUNETALK﴿ 10:49, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

Hello! You're right, at a quick glance at some other quest pages, it does look like we use second-person. Quests aren't something I've done much of so far. Nor are templates something I'm experienced with - is it possible to use the one you've got set up already? ~ Alarra (talk) 11:01, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
Can now (Maybe two minutes) be found at Template:Legends Quest Header. - KINMUNETALK﴿ 11:11, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
Update: I've updated the Fighting Pit to the template, but I'm also new to templates, so a couple of things aren't right. I'll look into fixing them. Thanks! - KINMUNETALK﴿ 11:21, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
It's looking good! Maybe add an "Other Conditions" field? (For instance in the first battle or two you don't have runes, and later on the opponent will start with creatures already in play) ~ Alarra (talk) 11:32, 31 July 2016 (UTC)
Thanks, it was actually mostly Robin Hood. We already have the option for "Special Rules" which is used with the parameter "Rules", which I forgot to add to The Fighting Pit. Nice job on documenting the quests! - KINMUNETALK﴿ 11:39, 31 July 2016 (UTC)

MentorringEdit

Hi there Alarra!

I saw a note on the Help page about mentorship, and that you are focussing mainly on ESO content.

I am migrating here from wikia, and would like some general advice/help on the differences between the two.

I've got a significant amount of content to add that I had added on the other one, just want to make sure that what I am adding is correct in terms of how things are done over here before I do. :)

I was the founder of the Elder Scrolls wiki over there, so yeah, lots of info to add :D Timeoin (talk) 23:27, 28 August 2017 (UTC)

Of course! I'd be glad to help. I've barely edited wikias, so I'm not sure about differences syntax-wise, but if there's something you're looking to do, just ask and I can tell you how to do it on the UESP. One major difference is that here, we use "namespaces": each game has its own, and there's a Lore one too, for instance. So for example the Oblivion:Cheydinhal page tells you about the town as it appears in Oblivion, Online:Cheydinhal tells you about the town as it appears in Online, and Lore:Cheydinhal tells you the history of the town, containing information from all the games it's appeared in, and so forth.
If you want to jump right into editing, here's a quick guide to some of the most common syntax and a page with information about how to upload/name/etc images, and if you want to do more reading, this page has links to a lot of information. There's a lot of information to take in, so if you have any questions about how to do something, or if you want a good example page for something you want to do, feel free to ask! The easiest and quickest way to get ahold of me is probably in our Discord; just send me a PM whenever you want. Welcome to the UESP!  :) ~ Alarra (talkcontribs) 00:07, 29 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi, I’m not sure if I’m even doing the talk page right sorry, I’m really new to wikis and I’ve pretty much never done this before. I’m trying to upload an image for a Blades NPC but the image won’t upload and the destination file name is wrong. I think I asked for it to be renamed if I’m understanding the what the page on images says right. Are there any tips or easy tutorials for image uploading? Plugs (talk) 15:01, 2 January 2020 (GMT)
Hi Plugs, I renamed the image per your request yesterday. The image can be found as File:BL-npc-Guthrum_of_the_Isles.png, your rename request was the correct format and your recent upload follows the guidelines. Editing issuesEdit

Hey hey :D I'm new to UESP, and not the most tech savvy with the editing system, i've tried several times to make a minor correction on the 4th Era timeline (an event listed as happening 5 years earlier that it's in Skyrim), I thought it to be a simple correction, I just cut it out of its position, changed the date, and put it in the correct location then saved it.... it seemed to work, but then on later visits it seems to have reverted, I trued clicking the minor edit box, as I saw this as a minor Edit, I really can't see what i'm doing wrong, if you have any insight i'd appreciate it -'J — Unsigned comment by Thorus (talkcontribs) at 14:34 on 30 July 2018

The reason it's reverting to what it was before is because a couple of other editors have come along and reverted your changes, saying that what was there before was correct. You can see this by clicking on the "history" tab at the top of the page. If you're convinced that what you changed was correct, I'd suggest moving to the "discussion" page and adding a new section there with the "+" tab. (Edit: looks like you've already done this, actually.) Then, you can present your argument for the changes you want to make, and why what's there currently isn't correct. Robin Hood  (talk) 18:08, 30 July 2018 (UTC)
Thanks man, i've had a response from another guy who is content with the error currently on the site, despite it being inconsistent with in game knowledge from multiple sources... I had hoped this site would be more open to accuracy, but I seem to be running into a case of elitism... perhaps the Imperials DID arrest Ulfric in Markarth before the city was taken back from the Reachmen, and the characters in game just have the wrong information. — Unsigned comment by ‎ Thorus (talkcontribs) at 21:56 on 30 July 2018

Adding referencesEdit

Hello Alarra. I have been trying to add references to a specific article that had some innacuracies, but I have no idea of how to properly add a reference. Can you help me?-DovahsaurusPaleoKnight (talk) 01:00, 30 April 2020 (GMT)

Hi there! You can use a page like Lore:Wolf as an example, since that has some references on it.
  • First, make sure you've got a section for references at the bottom with the references tag in it. This makes it able to generate the list at the bottom of the page.
==References==
<references/>
  • Second, go to the spot you want to add a reference, and add the following. This automatically places the little number in that spot, and also adds the info that will go in the references list at the bottom of the page. The "name=" gives each source a unique shortcut, which you'll see in the next step. The section after the name is what will appear in the references list at the bottom of the page - for instance the two examples here will look like "ESO mount descriptions/Crown Store blurbs" and "Froki Whetted-Blade's dialogue in Skyrim".
{{ref|name=ESOMount|ESO [[Online:Mounts#Wolves|mount]] descriptions/Crown Store blurbs}}
{{ref|name=SRFroki|[[Skyrim:Froki Whetted-Blade|Froki Whetted-Blade]]'s dialogue in Skyrim}}
  • If you want to use that same reference multiple times on a page (for instance, the ESO mount page gets referenced several times on that page), just add the following in any other spot you want to add the reference:
{{ref|name=ESOMount}}
  • "Unofficial lore" links - for example loremaster forum posts, etc - work very similarly, except it gets an extra "group=UOL" section in the initial spot you post it, and needs its own tag in the references section. You can see examples on Lore:Senche-Cat.
Hope this helps! ~ Alarra (talkcontribs) 18:30, 30 April 2020 (GMT)

VerificationEdit

Uh, hey Alarra. I've just started editing and I was wondering what the rules surrounding verification might be. I've been testing out a couple things tagged for verification and I don't want to just delete the tag once I've determined it's true, but I'm not really sure what else might be required. Thanks! ParadoxPraxis (talk) 04:55, 21 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi there! As far as I'm aware, verification just needs one other person to check that it's happening to them too. Sounds like you've covered that! ~ Alarra (talkcontribs) 03:15, 26 May 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the response! Time to tackle some tags. ParadoxPraxis (talk) 06:40, 26 May 2020 (UTC)

Adding tags to contrabandEdit

Hi! Not sure if this is useful or if anyone cares, but I was interested in adding cultural tags to Contraband. Some contraband belongs to a specific race or area, such as khajiit treasures from Elsweyr, daedric treasures, stuff relating to Sotha Sil, etc. Besides often being amusing, I find contraband often adds to in-game lore, and I would love to organise it accordingly. How else would I know that Nords collect the first snow of the year in a special jar, or that the khajiit consider it bad luck to break a comb? I've never edited a wiki so I'm a bit lost on how to start. Skuldafn (talk) 04:44, 27 July 2021 (UTC)

Hello! I definitely agree that the info from the contraband is interesting, and these lore bits are something I want added on the wiki too. Basically, it’s down to what you want done with it and why - are you envisioning a page for each race’s items? How does it differ from the pages that already list them; is there need for that information to be duplicated? Would this go in the Lore section of the wiki or Online? Ultimately, I think it would be ideal to find a way to work the lore bits into the race’s Lore page (for instance, Lore:Altmer). If you have any other ideas on how you want such a page to be set up, you’re welcome to create a sandbox for yourself! This would be a page just for you to make page drafts, practice editing, etc. You can create one with any name you want at https://en.uesp.net/wiki/User:Skuldafn/SandboxNameHere (just edit the “SandboxNameHere” to whatever you’d like)! Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions! ~ Alarra (talkcontribs) 18:42, 29 July 2021 (UTC)

Forever Hold your Peace addition for Velsa FlirtingEdit

I wanted to add the dialogue for asking Velsa to the wedding, but dont know how to do it and didn't want to mess up the page, so decided to leave it for you.

When you say "You're important to me, Velsa"

She replies "That's ... no. Absolutely not. Pull those thoughts back inside your trousers, set them afire, and bury their remains."

Option 1 is "[Lie] I was only joking"

She says "The lesser soulgem of wit strikes again. Are you done wasting everyone's time? Go on, choose someone so we can get this over with."

Option 2 is "I didn't mean it like that. I enjoy spending time around you-that's all."

She replies with "Well. It seems you do have some sense in your head. The wine will help get me through this. As long as it isn't the same slop from the Senche and Serpent."
