Flame Atronachs (sometimes known as Fire Atronachs)[1][2] are Elemental Daedra native to Infernace, a collective realm full and made of lava and fire. Seemingly made entirely of flame, they can be found unbound in the wild or can be conjured by those with magical aptitude to serve as guards, laborers, or otherwise obey their conjurers. Summoning of Flame Atronachs is usually performed through Koron's Peremptory Summons, a spell which usually summons Flame Atronachs in their conventional forms but which can be altered by conjurers to alter the minutiae of the summons (such as plane to summon from, daedra to summon, and form in which the daedra can be conjured).[3]
They are conventionally summoned and found in the form of vaguely feminine flaming floating humanoids; however they do appear in other forms—including a smaller form called the Flame Pixie. Their summoning was first perfected by the Direnni, especially Corvus Direnni and Peregrine Direnni, who discovered that they could be bound into different forms by their conjurers.[4] Flame Atronachs can be shaped by their conjuror to take the form of common animals to serve as mounts. Known varieties include bears, horses, guar, camels, senche-tigers and wolves.[5]
Flame Atronachs are found in many Daedric Realms, including those of prominent princes and minor planes. While possessing some intelligence, Flame Atronachs are largely an unorganized and chaotic group, with individuals being largely indistinguishable from one another. They are a source of Fire Salts, an alchemical ingredient which has varied utility.
Their inversions, Cold-Flame Atronachs, originate in Fourth Sinus of Takubar, an inversion of Infernace where all flame is cold.[6]
VariantsEdit
Aside from the commonly found humanoid forms, there are many other types of flame atronach found in Nirn and Oblivion.
Cold-Flame AtronachEdit
Cold-Flame Atronachs are a powerful Elemental Daedra native to a pocket realm of Oblivion called the Fourth Sinus of Takubar. The cold-flame atronach summons an essence of cold fire, and has a freezing ambiance that notably drops the temperature nearby, the same way the flame atronach gives off heat.
Cold-flame atronachs came to serve Molag Bal after an incident involving a flame atronach which led to their banishment from Coldharbour. A concerned denizen wanted a hovering sentry that possessed the flame atronach's same expressionless violence to fill the void they left behind. After searching over 37,000 planes and realms, he found a suitable replacement on the Fourth Sinus of Takubar. Cold-flame atronachs served as sentries in Coldharbour during the Planemeld.
Like other atronachs, it can be summoned in different forms: Peregrine Direnni was the first to summon one in the shape of a wolf.
Fire BehemothEdit
Fire Behemoths are large humanoid creatures that are classified as a type of Flame Atronach.[7] Unlike normal Flame Atronachs, they cannot fly but can use weapons. Skilled fire mages such as Pyroturge Encratis and his True-Sworn disciples can summon Fire Behemoths to do their bidding.[8] They are considered product of conjuration and utilized by mages of Battlespire.[9]
Flame Atronach BearEdit
Flame Atronach Bears are a form of Flame Atronach conjured in the shape of bears, possessing most of the conventional features and structures of bears but also being constructed of flame and magma. Empress Hestra was known to have ridden one, and their summons were also known to be in circulation around the time of the Planemeld.[4]
Flame Atronach CamelEdit
Flame Atronach Camels are a form of Flame Atronach conjured in the shape of camels, possessing most of the conventional features and structures of camels but also being constructed of flame and magma. Like many Flame Atronach variants, they were first summoned by Peregrine Direnni, and their summons were also known to be in circulation around the time the Planemeld.[4]
Flame Atronach GuarEdit
Flame Atronach guars are a form of Flame Atronach conjured in the shape of guar, possessing most of the conventional features and structures of guar but also being constructed of flame and magma. With apparently no known cases of their summoning prior to the Planemeld, their summons were first documented around that time.[4]
Flame Atronach HorseEdit
Flame Atronach horses are a form of Flame Atronach conjured in the shape of horses, possessing most of the conventional features and structures of horses but also being constructed of flame and magma. Like many Flame Atronach variants, they were first summoned by the Direnni, and their summons became commonplace during the Battle of Glenumbria Moors and seemingly saw a resurgence around the time of the Planemeld.[4]
Flame Atronach SencheEdit
Flame Atronach senches are a form of Flame Atronach conjured in the shape of Senche-Tigers, possessing most of the conventional features and structures of Senches but also being constructed of flame and magma. Like many Flame Atronach variants, they were first summoned by the Direnni, and their summons were in circulation around the time of the Planemeld.[4]
Flame Atronach WolfEdit
Not to be confused with their inversions, the Cold Flame Atronach Wolves, Flame Atronach wolves are a form of Flame Atronach conjured in the shape of wolves, possessing most of the conventional features and structures of wolves but also being constructed of flame and magma. Like many Flame Atronach variants, they were first summoned by Corvus Direnni, and their summons saw a resurgence around the time of the Planemeld.[4]
Flame MonarchEdit
Flame Monarchs are a stronger form of the more common Flame Atronach.[10][11][12] The Celestial Mage is known to have created a Flame Monarch named Magdra Ibrai and imbued them with thought. The Celestial Serpent Malazar corrupted the Mage in 2E 582 and used her power to enslave Magdra Ibrai and his fellow Monarchs, although they were eventually banished from Tamriel and thereby freed.[13]
Flame PixieEdit
Flame Pixies are miniature versions of Flame Atronachs that can be summoned.
Related BeingsEdit
Brothers of StrifeEdit
The Brothers of Strife are two beings of elemental destruction that act as guardians of the Stonefalls region of Morrowind. They both have the appearance of flaming bone colossi, towering undead skeletal constructs usually assembled from the bones of many corpses. Although the Brothers are a powerful weapon, they cannot be controlled and thus were eternally bound.
The Brothers were created in the early First Era by the Daedra-worshipping Chimer clans of the region after Nedic tribes (most prominently the Rontha) from Skyrim had successfully invaded Stonefalls. Faced with imminent defeat, the Chimer army made a last stand at a Daedric shrine far south of modern Ebonheart. Despite the dangers, the Chimer performed a dark transformation ritual to create the Brothers of Strife, using flame atronach essences and the hearts of their Nedic enemies, and offering two of their leaders as sacrifices. The monsters succeeded in crushing the Nedes and liberating Stonefalls, but continued to rampage. Using flame atronachs as guardians, the Chimer managed to bind the brothers atop Ash Mountain and the Tormented Spire, two large volcanoes that dominate the region. The responsibility of keeping the Brothers bound eventually passed down to House Indoril and House Dres, two Great Houses of the Dunmer, the descendants of the Chimer. These bindings were briefly broken in 2E 582.
Hearthfire KagoutiEdit
Hearthfire Kagouti could be found in the Grazelands of Vvardenfell. They are suspected to be the product of a Telvanni wizard's experimental melding of the reptile and a flame atronach.[14]
Valkyn SkoriaEdit
Much like the rest of Clan Valkyn—a Dremora clan in service to Mehrunes Dagon—Valkyn Skoria was a Dremora until imbued with essence from Infernace and by extension aspects of the Flame Atronach.[15]
Edit
There are some creatures which share many traits with Flame Atronachs. They have not been confirmed to be variants of atronachs or entirely different creatures altogether, leaving their nature ultimately unclear.
- Blazeborn Senche-lions are elemental felines that take a molten fiery appearance. They are described as being "born in flame".[16]
- Dragonfire Wolves are colossal flaming wolves ridden by Dragonknights into battle. It is speculated that they could be mystically imbued with Dragonfire or are flame atronachs conjured in the form of wolves.[17]
- Flame Hounds are elemental wolves that are composed entirely from a lava-like substance. Much like Flame Atronachs, they are constantly burning and use fire-based attacks in combat. They also can be found in Daedric realms such as the Deadlands.[18]
InfernaceEdit
Infernace, the collective realm of the Flame Atronachs, is described as mundane and repetitive, apparently being the aggregate of all of its inhabitants. It, much like the Flame Atronachs, is largely constructed of magma and flame, and is apparently the plane where most Flame Atronach summonings call. It has an inversion known as the Fourth Sinus of Takubar, which is apparently much like Infernace except totally devoid of heat.[6]
