Welcome!

Hello Dillonn241! Welcome to UESPWiki! It's always good to have new members. If you would like to help improve any of our pages, you may want to take a look at the following links:

If you would like to spice up your userpage, click here for a list of userboxes you can use, including a guide to making your own.

When you're editing, it's always a good idea to leave edit summaries to explain the changes you have made to a particular page, and remember to sign your talk page posts with four tildes ~~~~. Also, the "show preview" button is a great way to view the changes you've made so far without actually saving the page (our patrollers really appreciate it!).

Feel free to practice editing in the sandbox or discuss the games on the forums. If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact one of our mentors. Have fun! •WoahBro►talk 13:29, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Great job!

Great job you did in this edit! Just to let you know, though, while we mostly follow encyclopedic standards, we do allow contractions in articles because it makes the prose sound more natural. Keep up the good work. Robin Hood  (talk) 03:17, 16 February 2017 (UTC)

Thanks Robin Hood! It took a while to read through the whole page and I was only looking for grammar errors. A lot of work can still be done on these long descriptive pages like breaking up run-on sentences. As for the contractions, I think they were the only ones in the entire article. That made them feel out of place, so I expanded them. —Dillonn241 (talk) 02:00, 17 February 2017 (UTC)

Amiel Richton

I just want to confirm that Amiel Richton is the character's ingame name, the same as you confirmed for Nidal from Brother Nidal. You are right that all NPCs should have their page at their ingame displayed name, redirects can be created for titles given in other sources. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 18:58, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

From my experience with the game so far, you never see his name like other characters. Richton only appears in a few scenes and the conversation starts automatically, meaning there is no "Talk to ___" in the bottom left corner. This is much better than the previous name and follows wiki conventions though. —Dillonn241 (talk) 21:48, 3 March 2017 (UTC)

Userpatroller?

Hello Dillonn241! I've noticed your enthusiasm for the UESP, recently, and noticed you meet on userpatroller qualifications on Redguard alone, which is probably a first. That's why I would like for you to take the first step towards being a patroller, and apply for userpatroller. I think you'd make a fine addition to the team. To apply, all you have to do is add your in the section labeled list of applicants. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 07:18, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

Thank you for the suggestion and kind words, AKB! I will add my name to the list of applicants and look over the responsibilities of userpatrollers. I'm not sure if I have enough experience and wiki knowledge to be a full patroller yet, but this is a good first step. —Dillonn241 (talk) 07:31, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

Congratulations!

Welcome to the user patroller team! Keep up the excellent work, and soon you'll easily be able to drop the "user" part of that and join the full patrollers. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 07:41, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

Welcome aboard! Echo (talk) 07:52, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
Thank you AKB, Echo, and the other staff! That includes RobinHood70 and Jeancey. Thanks everyone! —Dillonn241 (talk) 08:00, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

Redguard Characters

The Characters page should have a completely different layout when the process of giving all the characters their own page os complete. A version of Skyrim:People is potentially what it should look like, rather than a bad version of one of the Lore:People pages. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 22:52, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

I know, it really needs a redesign. In the meantime, I am using it as an index, so I want to keep it tidy. —Dillonn241 (talk) 23:00, 7 March 2017 (UTC)

Oh, thank the Divines!

You're a full-fledged patroller now. That's probably about half the current patrolling load gone right there. :) Welcome to the team! Robin Hood  (talk) 17:34, 2 April 2017 (UTC)

This is exciting! Thank you Robin Hood, Echo, KINMUNE, Alarra, Legoless, WoahBro, and Jeancey for supporting my nomination. Let's hope I don't make some huge blunder, supposedly a common occurrence after either nomination or promotion to patroller. —Dillonn241 (talk) 04:06, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

9000

As requested on Discord, you get my 9,000th edit on UESP. (Since we dont really do blogs here :P) Timeoin (talk) 19:37, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

ITS OVER 9,000!! Timeoin (talk) 19:37, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

In one month you've made more edits than I have in a year. I'll continue doing my best to patrol your edits. —Dillonn241 (talk) 20:11, 13 October 2017 (UTC)
To be fair, its more than most people have in edits? (I am insane. I admit it) Timeoin (talk) 20:49, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

Redguard Comic

I just wanted to check that you have checked the relevant copyrights necessary to allow us to host the comic in full. I know The Imperial Library had to gain permission from Bethesda to host it, which we did not obtain. It is not the case that because they are distributing it for free we can use the material here, that is not making something free-to-use. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 04:04, 12 November 2017 (UTC)

In all my conversations with Bethesda in regards to hosting materials, I have been told that as long as something appears publicly and legally online at the pages of the copyright holders (like the Redguard comic book on elderscrolls.com), it is free to be rehosted elsewhere. In my years with the library, the only time TIL has had to obtain permission has been in regards to things that are not already online, such as the PGE images or the text for Naryu's Journal. Lady Nerevar (talk) 04:13, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
I was about to post a response, but Lady N beat me to it. These comic images should be fine because we are already hosting most of the other images on the official Redguard website, now archived. That is where I got them, not the new .pdf on elderscrolls.com. —Dillonn241 (talk) 04:16, 12 November 2017 (UTC)
There's a huge difference between these images and the ones we already have. The other images are to market and showcase a product, these are the product. Bethesda may not have a problem with us hosting them, but these do not fall under any sort of non-copyright or fair-use categories. I just want to be sure that we will not get into trouble hosting them and perhaps have to delete them at their request if they don't want us displaying their product for free. Hammerfell Places

Question - why are Kelps Yat, Sunkeep, and Chastown not locations? They're visible on the manual screen. Timeoin (talk) 08:47, 4 February 2018 (UTC)

If you mean all of the locations from the map of West Tamriel, then I agree that they should be documented in lore somewhere. All of the islands have pages now, but almost none of the rivers or settlements. I'm hesitant to create pages for places with no information except a name and location. This is the case for some islands, but there is a good possibility we will get more information on those in the future (for example, ESO mentions Yath). It may be best to list all of these on one page, perhaps Lore:West Tamriel. We can have all of the names redirect there, possibly the islands with no information as well. —Dillonn241 (talk) 18:53, 4 February 2018 (UTC)

Alchemy

Templates

Templates are used to improve load performance. An article of over 50,000 bytes will take longer to load than one of 10,000, even if that article is drawing information from other pages. Not to mention that templates are necessary to enable easier editing, as very lengthy articles are, in some cases, impossible to load at all for editing. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 23:35, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

This is one of those things where there's really no simple way to look at it. Yes, when it comes to editing, 10,000 will certainly be smaller than 50,000, and the page will likely load faster for those on slower connections. The problem is when it comes to viewing the page: when the wiki tries to render the page, it has to parse the templates, which then become links. This is non-trivial in this case, since NameList calls its /Entry sub-template for every name, and the sub-template calls Autolink. Autolink then parses what was passed to it and does several checks before figuring out what actual link to produce. All this to ultimately produce the very same links as what Dillon was putting in place, only it took a lot longer to do it. Caches come into play a little bit here, but the MediaWiki software doesn't cache templates with parameters very well, if at all. (I don't remember the specifics, but it's why we run into the occasional problem with parameterless templates, and sometimes have to add dummy parameters to get them to work right.) When editing, even if the load times are improved based on size, caches are generally invalidated, and so the whole editing process is slowed down by how long it takes for the wiki to re-parse the page and display it once the edit is done, so size doesn't always matter as much as you'd think it does.
It's on a case-by-case basis, but as a general rule, the fewer templates you have on a page, the faster it will be to view, load for editing, and save. Viewing is usually only minimally affected, but on pages with hundreds of template calls, loading and saving can be noticeably impacted with complex templates when compared with the same edits for an untemplated version of the page. Of course, the counter-argument, as you say, is that templates improve ease of use and often readability.
The idea here was to try converting a few and see if it improved performance, as we often have delays or even timeouts on the larger name pages, which is why they're subdivided in many cases (which doesn't entirely solve the issue, but does make editing possible in some cases, when it would've timed out before). I gather there was a noticeable improvement after converting to hard links rather than templates, which is what I would expect, though I only took a quick look at it myself. If that's the case, then it may well make sense to forego the templates on those pages and stick with hard links, despite the size increase. Robin Hood  (talk) 00:12, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Hardcoded bytes will always take longer to load, the loading times to undo those edits was abysmal. A quick, totally unqualified comparison with the first long page of roughly equal size that came to mind (Irkngthand) showed the hard-coded name page (Orc Names) to take longer to load for me. Another hugely important factor is editability. The name pages were being split because they had simply become untenable in length to edit, even with the templates in use, so reverting to an even worse situation makes absolutely no sense. Imagine trying to add a bunch of new names from the next ESO chapter to that, you would hardly know where to begin. Split pages are essentially the same as templates for the top page, and there was a huge degree of improvement to those pages that were split. Being able to edit a page has almost more, or at least the same, importance on a wiki, as being able to read it. Having edited as many pages as I have, I think I would be qualified to give an opinion on which pages are harder/longer to load, and that has always been the hardcoded pages, both for just reading and editing. Also, if this was purely a test, it should have been worded as such, not phrased in such a way as to appear to be permanent. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 00:39, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Strike that part, I've just realised I compared a hardcoded page with a hardcoded page and the one that was roughly 5k bytes bigger took slightly longer, as expected. I still stand by my experienced point of view that pages with more hardcoded bytes will take longer to load. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 01:02, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
It wasn't purely a test...a "trial run" might have been better wording, in the sense that the change was expected to be permanent, provided it improved times and nobody had any other objections. Obviously, at least the latter was an issue. As for times, to give you an idea of the differences, here's the profiling data for each version of the page, which you can see in the "Parser profiling data" at the bottom of the page or in the HTML code itself (lower numbers are better; I've stripped out results that were the same for both):
Measurement Templated Hard-Coded
CPU time usage 3.761 seconds 1.061 seconds
Real time usage 4.066 seconds 1.135 seconds
Preprocessor visited node count 42802/1000000 4369/1000000
Post-expand include size 343996/4194304 bytes 2886/4194304
Template argument size 78474/4194304 bytes 320/4194304
The last three are hardly a surprise, since they're all directly or indirectly related to the number of templates or transclusions on the page. They do give you an idea of how much less work the wiki's actually doing, though.
I have no argument with your other points, personally. There are definitely trade-offs here, no matter which direction we ultimately go.
I also just tried rapid-clicking the "Edit" button for each version of the page, opening 10 identical copies of the page for editing. Templated took 39 seconds to open all, while hard-coded took 23 seconds. That was only a single test, mind you. Your "abysmal" performance may have been the result of the ESO updates, which kick in roughly once an hour and sometimes slow things on the wiki substantially. (Dave's looking into that.) Robin Hood  (talk) 03:46, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
Considering how the non-template versions are seemingly faster in both ways, loading and displaying, should we consider expanding the templates again? These pages load and display so slowly that the template is really causing more harm than good in this case (and it should be slow simply because of how it works, performing a string operation on thousands of names each time). —Dillonn241 (talk) 00:45, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

Hello, regarding "The Spearhead". I understood, or thought that I did, that ship names like "The Sparhead" were in "Title case" i.e. The not the. No big deal but.. --Rhynchelma (talk) 00:55, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Most of your edits are perfectly fine. It just happens that the dialogue for Jalienna uses lowercase and we should use what the game uses for direct quotes. —Dillonn241 (talk) 00:57, 30 June 2018 (UTC)
OK, I understand. Thanks. --Rhynchelma (talk) 00:58, 30 June 2018 (UTC)

Daggerfall Thanks You

You have been given a Pet Daedroth!

Thanks for stealing all my edits, I was not looking forward to tidying up afterwards, and because you did it so well I give you a pet daedroth that you can clean up after.

You might have seen just why the job had been put-off for so long; each page has ~5 images, and each image is used on ~5 different pages. So either you edit each page after each move with an exponential amount of edits, or move it in bulk and then try to clean up the resulting mess. I went for creating a mess, but now I've no idea where to start cleaning up, and there's even more to go too. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 21:23, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

If these are all standard page moves, the bot can do them the messy way, but it'll make a mess and clean the bulk of it up a lot faster than a human would. All it needs is a list of what to move and where to move it to. It's not perfect when it comes to template changes, but if the parameter name is just a copy of the page name (with or without the "File:"), it can do those. Simple patterns also wouldn't be too difficult to add in, I think. Robin Hood  (talk) 21:48, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
It's not that simple, some are prefixed with DF, some have none, some have the wrong prefix (npc when it should be quest), others have the wrong name, some have abbreviations, and even those abbreviations don't always match the page name (eg Journey to Aetherius was prefixed MC for Mantella Crux). All the categories except those in maps should be right now, but they weren't and wouldn't have been a reliable way to know what to name them to. Others still have missing license information, which I was only able to see because I did them by hand. I know its a lot but this mess has been years in the making because of the complexity that was created by all these different naming "standards" and I do think it needs a human eye for the majority of the fixes. Daggerfall is almost done, once the Bot Request has been dealt with I can get the remaining maps done. Silence is GoldenBreak the Silence 22:15, 14 August 2018 (UTC)
Thank you Silencer! It was definitely a test of endurance. I probably should have waited a bit longer because I ended up editing the same pages a few times. —Dillonn241 (talk) 22:30, 14 August 2018 (UTC)

Edit "war" on Dibella's page

Hi Dillonn241! You have warned me about reverting the revert on Dibella's page, but I didn't. I was asked by other editor to put the note under the "Notes", so I didn't revert their edit, I did as they asked. https://en.uesp.net/w/index.php?title=Lore%3ADibella&diff=1850394&oldid=1845902 Phoenix Neko (talk) 21:47, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

You're right that it was a bit different from a revert, though with the unofficial warning I gave just minutes before, it would have been better to post on the talk page. You reverted the wording back despite it being in contradiction to the current policy. Dibella is just the tipping point of the warning though. The edit war on Scenarist Guild would be enough to justify it. —Dillonn241 (talk) 22:13, 27 September 2018 (UTC)

Inhabitants of various places

Hello, there! I've noticed you've eddited the Bruma article, where I added two TES: Legends illustrarions that bears art of common bruma people.

Here is my question: Legens tend to have plenty of wuality art of vrious inhabitants of almost all notable places. It's a pity it just lays there with no paritcular use. Adding those may help improove lore imprssion of the certain place as I believe a lot. So how would it be better to add such an illustrative material without breaking the page structure (I mean pages related to certain places of Tamriel ofcourse)? — Unsigned comment by Listens-to-Air (talkcontribs) at 05:52 on 10 November 2018‎

Yeah, I've had the same thought myself. I don't think adding these particular images is the right way to go, however. They don't show the city, which is the subject of the page. A better one might be Shimmerene Peddler. If you're adding an image though, be sure to add the card art and not the one with all the card stats.
It's hard to say whether it's noteworthy to mention that Bruma is home to profiteers and armorers. Surely every city has an armorer, and I wouldn't doubt most people want to make a profit. You might be able to get away with "Bruma is especially known for its profiteers and armorers". —Dillonn241 (talk) 06:01, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
Generic characters like that generally aren't lore-worthy and don't particularly merit inclusion. —Legoless (talk) 18:45, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Incorrect Map Location - Blackthorn Lair

The Blackthorn Lair Map needs to be moved from Glenumbra to Betnikh — Unsigned comment by 74.219.160.9 (talk) at 16:28 on 5 February 2019‎

I'm not exactly sure what you're talking about. If you mean the ESO map, I see a Bloodthorn Lair on Betnikh, nothing in Glenumbra. Online:Bloodthorn Lair reflects that as well. —Dillonn241 (talk) 16:33, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
It appears to be listed under the wrong zone in the Map List drop-down, which I assume is what they are referring to. We can ping Dave about it. --Enodoc (talk) 22:08, 7 February 2019 (UTC)

NS Template

Hi Dillonn, I've been doing a bit of work in the Beyond Skyrim namespace and remembered that back in the day rpeh had made a TR4 template to make linking easier for the Tamriel Rebuilt namespace. Had a quick look at replicating this (BS5C) but didn't seem to work (Dragonborn came out on show preview) and as I'm fairly clueless about templates, I didn't want to make a hash of it. I noticed you made some changes to the TR4 template back in November - any chance you can help with either creating the template or giving me any pointers? Cheers. --SerCenKing (talk) 11:52, 1 June 2019 (UTC)

In order for the template to work, the namespace has to exist in this list, which is probably why it didn't work. Besides Cyrodiil, which is already there, what else do you need? Once a patroller or admin adds the needed info, templates should work the way you expect after that. Robin Hood  (talk) 15:47, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
It already exists in that list. I'm not able to reproduce the issue. For example: Bruma Western Watchtower = Bruma Western Watchtower. —Dillonn241 (talk) 16:58, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
I wasn't clear if he was trying to create BS5C or copy it for another BS offshoot, so that's why I answered the way I did. Robin Hood  (talk) 17:54, 1 June 2019 (UTC)
Oh that's weird, not sure what I was doing then! Thanks both for your help. --SerCenKing (talk) 09:33, 2 June 2019 (UTC)

Card images

Hello! In this year User:CyrusBot uploaded card images from new TES: Legends client. But I have a question. Unobtainable cards Legends:Daedric High Priestess and Legends:Expert Atromancer seems like was removed from all AI decks. I hadn't seen them after developer change. So, how did you take that screenshots?--Hedera helix (talk) 22:50, 6 October 2019 (GMT)

Ilaro sent me these images to upload, which I believe he received directly from Bethesda. You'll want to ask him for details. —Dillonn241 (talk) 22:57, 6 October 2019 (GMT)
All right, thanks.--Hedera helix (talk) 23:14, 6 October 2019 (GMT)

Handling TR Data items

Hey there, I see you've been active in the Tamriel Data namespace and wanted to test something with you regarding the Beyond Skyrim namespace. In essence, Beyond Skyrim is similarly structured to TR in that it has a central assets .esm called BSAssets and then content .esm's like Bruma that use both their own unique assets but also common ones from BSAssets.

My conundrum now that I'm looking to create pages for items in Bruma, is whether to just do one page for weapons, or separate pages for common weapons under BSAssets and specific Cyrodiil weapons respectively. The former is obviously less time-intensive, but given that new, non-Cyrodiil BS releases are not unlikely, there may be value in separate pages. I wanted to ask what approach you'd taken with Tamriel Data items in TR3 pages and whether you had any thoughts on the matter generally. Happy to move to the CP if more useful. Thanks! --SerCenKing (talk) 19:05, 11 April 2020 (GMT)

I would definitely recommend two pages, one in each sub-namespace. The thing that made me decide to move everything to Data (still in progress) is that items are no longer always able to be split by mod. There is Tamriel Rebuilt, but also Skyrim: Home of the Nords and Province: Cyrodiil. More and more, we're seeing items getting used in multiple mods, so which one does it really belong to? Better option: keep the common items separate since they are already internally separate.
My only complete example of the correct division between Data, TR, SHOTN, and PC items is with books. See the pages here: TD3, TR3, SHOTN, PC3. Armor, weapons, etc. are complete for Data (though need to be updated for Data 7) but not for the specific mod items. —Dillonn241 (talk) 19:19, 11 April 2020 (GMT)
Great thanks! That sounds like the right approach, and useful to see the division in practice. Now I just need to find some kindly soul to make me a template or something... --SerCenKing (talk) 20:35, 11 April 2020 (GMT)

Questions about "Redguard Mod Manager"

Greetings, I apologise if I'm bothering. You are the developer of "Redguard Mod Manager"?

I wanted to ask if there is any way to fix this, or can you please give advice/help? The program has a point that it does not save changes in .fnt and .gxa files (it saves an empty, 0-byte file), but correct saves changes for texbsi.(nnn)

I'm just making a localization for a game in my native language, I don't know Java at all to fix it by myself, to make possible to import sprites past the mod manager (and not bug making way through the hex-code as I do now), so maybe you can at least point me in the right direction so I have a better idea of how to fix it¿

Thank you for your time! and Thank you in advance for your reply! —Maxandkon 07:02, 1 May 2023 (UTC)

Advice on Oblivion farm/"isolated building" notes

Hey Dillonn - hope you don't mind my running this by you, given your recent reviews of my (many) Oblivion place page edits. On my to-do list for soon-ish, I'd like to do another pass through the 11 "farm" and 4 "isolated building" settlement pages to add "Notes" in a standard format per CS research confirming:

1) the lock (if any) on the entrance(s), and location of any key 2) whether entering is considered trespassing 3) whether beds/items may be freely used/taken 4) whether containers respawn, and if so, which ones

This would build on my recent edits discussed with SerCenKing on the Greyland/Isolated House/Roland Jenseric's Cabin "isolated building" pages. While recognizing these farms/isolated buildings aren't technically "houses", given their size and overall similarity, I'm thinking this adaptation of this aspect of the "Notes" from the Oblivion Houses Redesign Project may be useful. Thoughts? --Mikeprichard (talk) 14:35, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

That type of information is worth recording, for sure, and I like how it's presented on the Greyland page. Go ahead (although you don't need my permission). —Dillonn241 (talk) 00:02, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Great - I just wanted to check first so I can one-and-done it without causing concerns I may not have considered down the road. I should get to this in the next few weeks - thanks again! --Mikeprichard (talk) 00:18, 8 January 2024 (UTC)

Adding Templates and Categories

Hi Dillon,

As I was trying to figure out how to create Templates and Categories myself, I noticed you were doing so just now.

So I'm wondering if it would put you to very much work to create a few more, assuming they meet with your approval.

User BSD - This user plays on BSD.

User RGU - This user is knowledgeable about Redguard Unity.

User NoDawnguard - This user is actively attempting to avoid learning anything about Dawnguard.

User NoHearthfire - This user is actively attempting to avoid learning anything about Hearthfire.

User NoDragonborn - This user is actively attempting to avoid learning anything about Dragonborn.

User NoTribunal - This user is actively attempting to avoid learning anything about Tribunal.

User NoBloodmoon - This user is actively attempting to avoid learning anything about Bloodmoon.

User NoESO - This user does not accept any content from Elder Scrolls Online as canon.

Hist - This user venerates The Hist.

Cheers,

I think I've figured out how to do it myself.
Still need to obtain good (and copyright permissible) icons for BSD, RGU, NoESO and Worships|Hist though.
Would love some help with that, since UESP copyright policy seems far stricter than any other wiki.
Robin of Blackwood (talk) 18:10, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, Robin. You posted after I had gone to sleep, so that's why I haven't replied until now. Your "No <Game>" userboxes look fine, although I don't think we needed the original ones in the first place (no harm done now that they exist; there's no limit to userboxes except to keep in mind the potential audience). I changed the NoESO icon to transparent so you don't need a custom icon.
I added The Hist and Ithelia to User Worships and did a general pass on the images supported. Looks like DFU's icon is ready to use. You can use a public domain image for BSD. —Dillonn241 (talk) 22:32, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
Thank you so much, they look great!
Regarding the "No <Game>" userboxes, I understand where you're coming from, but it didn't make sense to me to have them for Oblivion DLC but not for Morrowind and Skyrim. Maybe it's just my OCD talking, but I feel like it should be all or none.
I noticed you made the NoESO template more open-ended. (Great!) I could also just make it say "This user is actively attempting to avoid learning anything about Elder Scrolls Online" to be consistent with the other "No <Game>" templates. But then it would be inconsistent to have a "No <Game>" template only for ESO but not for the other games (as opposed to DLC)... What do you think?
Regarding a public domain image for BSD, that's a bit tricky. The various BSD logos (Beastie, Puffy, Flag) tend to be under copyright. And UESP only allows a small set of licenses. I've uploaded this image and put the license and copyright notice in the description, but I fear that a passing editor will likely remove it regardless.
Robin of Blackwood (talk) 11:44, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
The NoESO userbox could go either way. I figured the issue most people have with it is the lore (this is true for the Morrowind modding community, for example).
What's the issue with using something like this Wikimedia Commons image? The beastie image you uploaded could potentially be an issue. I'm not very well versed on all those licenses. I'd prefer to play it safe with a Wikimedia image, but I'd like to hear your input. —Dillonn241 (talk) 11:52, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
That wikimedia commons image isn't any actual logo, it's a chopped-off section of a FreeBSD banner. Whereas Beastie is iconic as being the mascot of all open-source BSD operating systems taken together. But if you think it might be an issue, then maybe it's better to go with something that isn't any official logo? Someone at wikipedia apparently thought so. Your call, you are an admin and mentor here and I'm a complete noob :)
Robin of Blackwood (talk) 12:13, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
I'm going to follow Wikipedia on this one. The Linux penguin logo matches Wikipedia's, so it makes sense to match what they have for BSD. Userbox images don't need to be fancy, so it's best to avoid any potential licensing issues with that. That said, I'm guessing the beastie logo would have been fine copyright-wise, based on the clause you cited in its description about non-commercial use. —Dillonn241 (talk) 12:23, 29 January 2024 (UTC)
Awesome. Sorry to cause you so much hand-holding overhead! Robin of Blackwood (talk) 12:30, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

Deletion

Hey man, I saw that you deleted a file I uploaded. It was marked for deletion for a while but the second that tag was added I defended its existence on the talk page. Is it not in practice for deleting files to engage in the talk page? Just feels like there wasn't any consensus, though of course I'm biased. Mindtrait0r (talk) 00:02, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, Mindtrait0r, thank you for pointing that out. I should have noticed the talk page but missed it. Let's reach consensus there first. —Dillonn241 (talk) 00:14, 29 January 2024 (UTC)

How to merge two character pages?

I posted in the community portal regarding with a proposal to merge Andoriel (Woodhearth) and ON:Andoriel (Seaside Sanctuary) as they can be considered the same individual since she was disguised as an Altmer during Veil of Illusion as mentioned by the dialogue. Meanwhile, Andoriel in Seaside Sanctuary made reference of being friends with Asteril (Who plays a role in the Veil of Illusion quest) and never getting a chance to thank the player for allowing them to seek justice against the Veiled Heritance.

Is there a way to merge these pages and rename it as a single page called Andoriel?

Raren (talk) 13:25, 31 January 2024 (EST)

There are two different ways of merging pages, and which one makes the most sense will depend a lot on the edit history of those pages. In both cases, however, the first step is the same: manually integrate any information from the secondary page into the primary page. That makes it easy for people to see what's being done and why, and at that stage, things are easily reversed if something comes to light somehow that indicates they're actually not the same person.
After that, you can either convert the secondary page into a redirect or ask an admin to fully merge the two page histories.
 • Redirects make more sense when the edit histories are very different for each page and occurred at roughly the same times. In other words, each page evolved independently with little overlap in information.
 • A history merge is something only an admin can do. It takes every single edit to both pages, merges them together, then sorts them in chronological order. This makes more sense when the bulk of the edits of one page are consecutive to the edits in the other page or the information is nearly identical in both content and layout on both pages. Otherwise, you get an edit to one page, then an edit to the other page, then back to the first page, etc., a bit like you'd taken pages from two different books and sorted them by page number. It's confusing and weird if they're very different. In any event, if this is the route that makes the most sense, all you'd need to do is post to your CP topic once everything's ready and ask an admin to merge the two pages, making sure to specify which page is meant to be the primary page once it's done.
Looking quickly at the two Andoriels, I'd say a redirect is probably the better choice, especially once you get to around 2020/2021 where there are a lot of different edits going on, but I'm not absolutely set on that. Robin Hood(talk) 21:19, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
Thanks RH for responding so quickly. —Dillonn241 (talk) 22:08, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
